No way. Calvin "Howdy" Doody bears a physical resemblance, but he's more dangerous.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting, fun read...and more!

Brinn Colenda’s “Homeland Burning” is a quick read thriller, packed with action and suspense. However, on completing this book a few days ago, it has lingered in my mind. Sure it’s well-written. Sure it includes lots of flying scenes...my favorite. Sure there’s the focus on New Mexico landmarks and culture. Sure the line between the good guys and bad guys is clear cut. And by adding politics into the mix, there is complexity within the plot. All my expectations for this genre check out. And there’s that sly final chapter and even more provocative final line.
However, the underlying tale was more than the clever plotting or the usual good guy bad guy tension. Beginning in the year 2000, the looming 9/11 historical “burning” reality provides further context that usually is the province of historical fiction. The book also lives up to its “saga” subtitle reference as it is a part of an ongoing series of novels about the Callahan family. These techniques speak of a very clever novelist who has given himself room to explore multiple genres within the same series. Oh perhaps his books might always be classified as “thrillers” in that they are action-packed but seems to me this author might be building something new and interesting with this series. He has given himself multiple avenues to explore and I suspect I won’t be the only fan to follow him with interest. The ride may be as exciting as chasing an SUV full of bad guys into a canyon with a Beechcraft.

Howdy Doody is out of prison, and there's nothing funny about that. Time for someone to die.

A conflict resolved peacefully, with the characters coming to identify with each other -- it's the kind of story I wish there had been more of when my own children were small. Now they are huge, alas, but I've finally written it.
With wonderful illustrations by a pro, Nick Talbert.
