We used to have a bicycle thread, but I can't find it, so I'm starting another...

Yes! It was called "Bicycles are go!" if I remember correctly. But the search function isn't working and I'm too lazy to go through all other categories to find it. I checked in sports and the thread wasn't there.
At the end of this month I'm riding in a fund raiser for the National MS Society. It's a two-day ride, going 100 miles the first day, 75 miles the second. So far I've raised $525. If you'd like to sponsor me... :)
That is GREAT thread finding, Janine. I'm impressed.(That reminds me, I finally found my copy of Broken Toy Shop and will get a copy in the mail this week.)
I have a trail/street hybrid - a 20-year-old Schwinn that I've taken good care of and which is hanging in there admirably - and I'm on it several times a week.
I make it a point to stay in good enough shape so the kids can't outrun/swim/bike/throw/bat me. Yet they still call me "old man."

There is no bike per se in my fantasy world! :-)

I ride my bike once in a great while to work, but it's too far for regular commuting. I get all sweaty and have to sponge off and change my shirt. There are a couple of really major hills along the way. This weekend, I biked up through the neighborhood to the Chehalis-Western trail, an old rail line they converted into a hiking/biking trail back in the 80s. It's lined with small farms, orchards, blackberry bushes, and then farther up the trail some forest which feels ten degrees cooler than the rest of the trail. The tall evergreens just breathe coolness...
I love biking there, because there's no traffic, and it's relatively flat. I see plenty of birds, and a few cows and horses, but no bunnies. I think I'm not out early enough for that.
That sounds really nice, Jackie. If I had a bicycle, I could head out my back door, through a park, over a pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River, and on to about 200 miles of walking/biking trails.
If I only had a bicycle. I need to get a bicycle.
Kevin: I remember that song!
Bun: That's the advantage of a town the size of mine. Everything is bicycle-distance away.

thank you sally! thought that was an obscure reference that no one was going to get. yup, i can still hear that song in my head
i think i have owned a bicycle since i was two. first a tricycle, then training wheels, then a bigger one every few years. the one i have now is almost eleven years old. i use it almost every day (i don't own a car) and it sleeps outside, but it is strong. i should take it to the bicycle repair guy though for some small repairs. maybe tomorrow.

Where is it warm and dry and bicycley? Do I have to move to Davis?"
Here, Bun, here! Move here! You could have two out of the three 4 months out of the year!

Sally wrote: "Colorado: bicycles, sunshine, mountains, and ex-husbands.":D .... so true! I try to ride to work as often as I can when it is warm enough(50+) and not snowing or raining. My commute is about 6miles and the uphill is on the way home, so I don't have to worry about being all sweaty.

Actually I hear from friends who have been there that Mackinac Island is gorgeous."
It certainly is. I'd love to live there or anywhere north.

You need those special padded shorts if you're going to do that, RA. But then you'd be one of those annoying bicyclers with special clothes who don't smile as they whiz past you...
i ride an Alpinestars mountain bike. i have worn those lycra shorts but i feel like mikhail baryshnikov while wearing them. better not be any shame in your game with those baby's on
I've worn them riding bikes also, and I apologize to everyone whose eyesight I may have ruined.

My boss rides his bike to work. He strutts around in his bike pants after hours. He does see himself as an Italian Stallion.

I did! But I lifted it directly from photobucket. I'm thinking of posting things on photobucket because then I all I have to do is copy the link.
Holy shit! I just found out that a lady (for whom I babysat when I was in college) was riding her bike yesterday morning when another woman drove through a red light and hit her. She died 4 hours later. W.T.F.
I worry a lot about this on the bicycle. I have to cross some streets, esp. on the southern route, and sooner or later a bike accident is going to happen. A couple people seem to get hit/killed around here every summer. Sorry about all that, Heidi.
I haven't seen her in almost 20 years, but still... it's just weird to see the name of someone you recognize in a story like that, esp. when she's the victim, so to speak. That's a really ridiculous intersection. And I've heard they're talking about widening that highway to make it a 6-7 lane road. It's already 4-5 lanes wide.

I'm back on my quickly aging (maybe ten years old) mountain/street hybrid for the summer. This morning I did ten miles up to Belgium (not the country, uh, the small town) and ten miles back. I love riding in the morning, near dawn, if the wind isn't strong, especially. The northern route (I'm on an inter-urban trail) works through corn/soybean fields. As I ride birds flutter along next to me (very Disney) and bunnies burst out of the fields then burst back just as quickly. Man, I love riding my bike when the conditions are right (e.g. I'm not fighting a full-on wind).
I don't ride my bike to places as much as to get out of the gym and get some sun. I might start riding around town more often to see how that works. I'll take my backpack with me.
Also, I saw people in Olympia/Seattle riding bikes up those hills, and I felt like a total wuss.
You on the bicycle this summer?
