Ben | 116 comments Not a novel or a collection of short stories, but I recommend the Book of the Dead: The Complete History of Zombie Cinema.

Sean O'Hara (seanohara) | 2365 comments The Forest of Hands and Teeth is pretty fun, though being a YA novel[1:] there's quite a bit of teenaged wangst.

Unfortunately, the sequel really sucks.

[1:] Yes, a YA zombie novel.

Peter Hansen (ptrhansen) | 63 comments For a different take on the zombie mythology (it is a std) you can read the upcoming book in online serial form for free before "The Loving Dead" by Amelia Beamer comes out this summer. With the transmission of the disease sexually transmitted it is not a young adult book.

As though sexy vampire books weren't bad enough...

Peter Hansen (ptrhansen) | 63 comments They aren't sexy zombies but the disease that causes the zombies is an std. The zombies behave in regular zombie like behavior once they have turned (for the most part). The story is mainly about the start of the outbreak.

Sean O'Hara (seanohara) | 2365 comments How quickly does this STD work? It must be incredibly slow if it has any chance to spread before the infected become symptomatic.

Peter Hansen (ptrhansen) | 63 comments It takes a few hours to a few days but biting spreads it almost immediatly. The story takes place over the first 48 hours or so of the outbreak.

Sean O'Hara (seanohara) | 2365 comments It doesn't seem to me that there are enough people who have sex with multiple partners over the course of a few days for the STD vector to be a significant factor in the outbreak. We might have to nuke a couple college campuses and shut down a few dance clubs, but other than that, it'd be a standard zombie outbreak.

But maybe I'm hanging out with the wrong people.

Peter Hansen (ptrhansen) | 63 comments Sex isn't the only vector, just the slowest. Biting is a nearly instant turning. Also it seems the when starting to turn the person is more aroused and puts out something that arouses the people around them (Never completely described in the book but it is all first person). Turning by std is more like being bitten in "Sean of the Dead".

Sounds like a Twilight move: "I love you, but I want you so bad it's dangerous." Pairing sex and monsters certainly isn't new, but it's strange to see a resurgence in YA fiction.
