RandomAnthony | 14536 comments After last night's perfect game disaster call in the Tigers/Indians game, you know this question is up for conversation...

Should baseball have instant replay for close calls? What types of calls, and in what situations?

Despite last night's debacle happening to my home team, I'd still have to go with "no."

Why dehumanize the sport with technology?

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments this is a touchy deal. i would say no we do not unless my team had a huge call blown that cost us something important. lots of people feel this way about things as long as they do not affect them.

No to instant replay. Aside from home run calls, if we had to stop for umps to review a close play at the plate, the game would be 5 hours long...and the game's too long as it is.

Every sport has that argument. We must realize that umpires and referees are human, and it's their judgment that counts, even if they get calls wrong once in a while.

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Within limits, the instant replay can be useful. Obviously you don't want every call--balls and strikes, etc.--to be subject to debate.

But if the umpiring crew as a whole feels that consulting the tape will help get a botched call right, I'm all for it. The number of really big disputed calls in any one game is pretty insignificant. So I don't think you would end up with 5 hour games, as long as the decision to go to the tape is left up to the majority of the umpiring crew and/or crew chief.

At the end of the day, these guys really do want to get the calls right. And what happened to Armando Galarraga last night is just totally screwed up, so why not let it be subject to review?

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments You see, the time issue is a big one here, I agree, because games can already run so long. So there would have to be specific situations, time limits for review, etc.

Bud Selig's chimed in. He may allow for a replay.

I say the issue's over. I hate that a blown call ruined the chance for a perfect game, but shit happens, unfortunately. Every time a blown call (or non-call) occurs, there are loud calls for instant replay, but it'll never happen. And believe me, there are PLENTY of instances where a blown call SHOULD have been reviewed; if instant replay were allowed in soccer, then France doesn't qualify for the World Cup.

I just think we're blowing this completely out of proportion. Now, if this call were made during the 7th game of the World Series, then calls for instant replay may be more justified, but it's June, we're a 1/3 of the way through the season, and, aside from a little history being made, ultimately the Tigers won the game, and I think the Tigers would gladly take the win, despite their teammate losing the opportunity at immortality.

ms.petra (mspetra) I think each mgr should get a specific # of challenges - say 3 - per game. An instant replay review would not take any longer than the mgr arguing with an umpire. That would take care of the really egregious calls. Armando Galarraga was robbed and hopefully Selig will make the call to give him the perfect game.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments give him the perfect game (it will be a flawed perfect game anyway) since the outcome of the game will not change. this then gives the pitcher his credit (since everyone knows he did it anyway) and also sort of lets joyce off the hook a bit

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments I agree with Kevin. A perfect game is not something that you just shrug off, and Joyce knows that he screwed up. Ms. petra's 3 challenges idea could be a good way to go--but I think that the manager should still argue with the umpires. It's tradition.

Regardless of your view on instant replay in baseball, I have a message for Detroit sportswriters regarding Galarraga: when I snap my fingers, move on. Last time I checked, we were in the middle of a pennant race.
