message 1452: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nicapineda) It's actually incredibly retarded. First she tells off all those who "leaked" Midnight Sun. And then she posts it on her site for all those who won't read it out of respecting her (as if). If she posts it anyway, what's the point of being pissed off for those who leaked it? D'oh.

It's just some publicity stunt since her finale Breaking Dawn was a total disaster. No, IS a total disaster.

Wow. You type like I do when I am drunk-facebooking my friends. Half the time, it doesn't make sense either.

And hon, acronyms are okay when you use them sparingly. However, in this group we are trying to maintain a scholarly discussion. So please, talk [type:] like a human being or we won't even bother with you.

Also, ever hear of a run-on sentence? Because you've got it down pat.

message 1458: by Nicole (last edited Apr 17, 2009 11:33PM) (new)

Nicole (nicapineda) Ali Edward. People here have a reason why we don't like Twilight and it's because we have higher standards of intellect and literary taste. We criticize it. And if you think it's mean just because we deviate from the social norm, doesn't mean it's stupid. Excuse us for using our freedom of speech and critical thinking.

Frankly, no one sees why you should be here. Unless you have some valid, sane, decent, and intellectual reason for your presence (and/or your love for Twilight), we all think it best you leave.

And I agree with Jennifer. We try to post our thoughts here. Sensible thoughts.

And just in case you didn't notice, most of what we said is dripping with sarcasm. Just so you know.

Jennifer | 45 comments Ok, maybe I did come off as a bit bitchy, but I seriously have no patience for people who abbreviate every other word. It takes me forever to figure out what they are trying to say, and if you can't take the time to type out the word "someone," well, why should I waste my time reading what you have to say? I agree with Kit and Cyn. You come in here saying you love Twilight, when it is clear we don't. What did you expect?

message 1467: by Rheeza (new)

Rheeza (rheezreads) If Twilighters are wasting their time dreaming about Edward, does that mean everyone who dreams of a hero in a romance novel, or of becoming a wizard like Harry Potter, or of a fairytale character should get a life too? Should we just burn all fantasy, sci-fi, fairytale and romance novels? Why is it that people who don't like these stories are thought to have a life whereas people who do are not? Imagine if all the books we read were based on real life experiences. Wouldn't that get old really quickly? The great thing about reading is you have such a variety to choose from and can choose to either read a true-to-life book or escape into another world if you wish. It beats worrying eternally over paying the bills and all the sad things you hear in the news. We need an escape from all that from time to time. Otherwise, we'd end up wasting our time creating websites just to gripe at people.

message 1471: by Lindsay (last edited Apr 19, 2009 10:35AM) (new)

Lindsay Uh... I don't understand what you're trying to say, Iza. First you said that people should be able to have our opinions, then you told us that we shouldn't be able to express our opinions. I don't quite understand. That is very hypocritical. Should the Twilighters be able to have and express their own opinions while we cannot? I don't believe so. We should all be able to have and express our opinions however we wish. This is a free country, you know. You said so yourself.

message 1472: by Jennifer (last edited Apr 19, 2009 11:44AM) (new)

Jennifer | 45 comments And Iza, in response to your first comment: yes literature is supposed to a form of escapism. I've dreamt about being inside my favorite books as well. Since Harry Potter happens to be the favorite comparison, lets use that as an example. True, the events in Harry Potter are fantastical. Centaurs, half-giants, talking paintings, airborne sports, a school for wizards? its all good sensational fun. The difference is that JKR has a talent for story-telling, and while these things do not exist, the way she presents them (intermingling the usual teenage experience with these magical elements) makes it seem as if they could happen in real life. That is why Harry Potter so easily sparks the imagination. That is why it is such an easy book to escape into. Twilight, however, is so poorly handled and overblown to the point that it is ridiculous. the characters are too perfect for us mere mortals to relate to. The love story is too far-fetched to actually be plausible. In short, I come away from this book, not with the feeling that I was part of a story, but with a feeling of intense incredulity.

Actually, if you read our discussions--as in, our actual discussions and not our fun little rants about the characters--then you'll find we're doing anything but trash talking Twilight. We go over points of the book that we don't like and we go into detail about why we dislike it. Rarely does anyone sit around just yelling, "I hate Bella! I don't know why but I hate her!!!!"

We're a little more intelligent than your fellow Twi-lovers probably lead you to believe (intelligent enough not to join and rant about something we love in a group that hates that thing we love, that is). ;-P

Jennifer | 45 comments Hey guysI wondering something and I think someone here might know. I'm sure by now we are all aware of the Stephen King interview where he pretty much stated what we knew all along: Stephenie Meyer is a crappy writer. I was just wondering if she has publically responded to this, maybe in an interview or press release? Or is she crying her little heart out because there are people out there who aren't buying into her sh*t? I really can't wait to hear her try to defend herself.

Ah, well I only joined this group a few weeks ago so I missed that discussion. She's probably too much of a wimp to try to stand up for herself.

I'm glad I joined this group though. *looks pointedly at Ali* its nice to be able to discuss this book with rational adults.

I can't? Funny... Isn't that exactly what you fans are always doing...? ;-P I don't do things just to be doing them, hun. I have my reasons. And it's fun to hear fans respond to things like this because of the hypocracy. XD

And if you hate this group so much, why did you join it in the first place? Did you think it'd be fun to pester us, perhaps thinking we'd come back at you like rabid maniacs? That's usually most fans' reasoning, but it's really quite a stupid one... For future reference, don't join a hate group about something you love because in your own words, "it's pointless!"

Nicole (nicapineda) Iza wrote: "If Twilighters are wasting their time dreaming about Edward, does that mean everyone who dreams of a hero in a romance novel, or of becoming a wizard like Harry Potter, or of a fairytale character ..."

Iza. Do you have split-personality disorder? One comment you were putting up a good case for Twilight, and the next you posted something stupidly unreasonable.

I understand that fiction is a wonderful alternative to reality. But people in this group have standards . Not to mention, Twilight's becoming an opium of stupidity. It's a literary failure and we'd rather spend our lifetimes reading something better like Eoin Colfer or something. Or at least I would :P

Nicole (nicapineda) Jennifer wrote: "Hey guysI wondering something and I think someone here might know. I'm sure by now we are all aware of the Stephen King interview where he pretty much stated what we knew all along: Stephenie Meyer..."

Darn, not yet. But Twihards have been defending her. They say the following:

1. Stephen King is jealous (WTF?!? Jealous of her army of fans?)
2. He wants to make some comeback through a scandal
3. He wants to draw attention back to himself. (I laughed my ass at this one.)

Some have admitted that they think Meyer sucks, but simply like the story (or fantasizing themselves in the story) too much. I'm glad some people are honest enough.

That's all I've heard from now. I personally wanted Anne Rice to scold her, but King beat her to it.

message 1480: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 45 comments ok, the day Stephen King is jealous of a pop writer is the day hell freezes over. He's just telling it like it is. We should invite him to this group.

If you ask me his comment was really reserved. He said she can't write worth a darn. If they had asked me I would not have been so polite. There would have been a few expletives. And at least he remained diplomatic by pointing out that its good she's getting kids to read (though in my opinion Twilight is hazardous to mental health).

I've read some stuff by King. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan, but since he is the first public figure to point out what we have been trying to communicate all along, he is officially my hero.

Mr. King, I take off my hat to you, sir.

Artemis Fowl is great if you like smart, evil, criminal masterminds, LOTS of wit, intellect and sarcasm and overall fantasy. There's much action and also a lot of environmental innuendo. Colfer's a great contemporary writer. True-to-life, non-sparkly characters, a brilliantly distinct writing style, captivating plots and overall awesomeness.

I'd suggest this for sci-fi fans.

message 1484: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nicapineda) Meyer is probably very chagrined and is thinking up some dazzling retort to King's cold-blooded comment.

She's probably looking up her thesaurus to make phrases like "a paroxysm of giggles".

P.S. Said phrase is actually in Eclipse. -__-

And people who love the books don't need to criticize and bash people who don't. I'm not saying you are doing that, it's an 'in general' thing. If someone even remotely hints at not liking the books, Twihards go all batsh*t insane on them.

The difference is that most fans of Twilight take it too far. There are some fans that are making Twilight their complete life. The do nothing but eat, sleep, drink, and crap Twilight. Girls dumping boyfriends because they're not "Edward" enough. Adult women fantasizing about Edward and telling husbands they would leave them if 'an Edward' came along. Some moms neglecting their children to read, re-read the books and watch that idiotic movie. It goes too far when the die-hards try to censor other people's opinions, when those opinions don't match their own. The die-hard Twihards get butthurt really easy.

There is nothing wrong with liking a fantasy books. There is nothing wrong with wanting to escape to that world and leave the worries of reality behind.
I wish that Hogwarts was real and that magic did exist. But I don't spend every waking moment fantasizing about it, and I don't make it the center of my life.
A LOT of the Twilight fans are taking that far, to a point of unhealthy obsession.

I would love to hear a comment from JKR about these books. After all, Twilight and HP are compared constantly, and so are JKR and SM.

I haven't read Meg Cabot either, but kudos to her and her point. I agree that JKR should really give out her own thoughts about their comparison. I mean, there's this comment that I read before in LJ

To me, there's no point in comparing Harry Potter and Twilight. Harry Potter is in a different realm from Twilight. HP is believable, and funny. Twilight is dumb and a pathetic attempt at witty.
I actually liked the movie. Considering what a crappy book it was based off of, the director did the best she could.

Ooooh, are we doing Twilight confessions? Speaking as a reformed Twitard, mine are bad...
I spent a fun camping trip with three of my friends holed up in the tent rereading the series the night Breaking Dawn came out.
