LynnB I read this a while ago and gave it 4 stars. I really enjoyed it. Retired historian Lyman Ward sets out to write his grandparents' story of living on the western frontier. He discovers a lot about his own life along the way.

Before reading this book, I hadn't read any Stegner, but now I've read a few more and really enjoy him as an author and keep picking up more of his books.

Erin I just started this book this weekend, and so far it's awesome! I wish I had more time next week to get further into it. The grandmother's story is awesome, and it's fun to have the narrator's point of view come into the narrative at certain points (the interjections can be funny and are appropriately timed, reminding the reader that this really is a story-within-a-story).

Gregory Rothbard (polycarp55) I also agree... with Erin that Angle of Repose is another beautiful book in the collection. It is up there with Brideshead Revisited. I am glad I have had the opportunity to start to read and listen to this grand novel. What a great trip it is... I picture my own family in similar situation... it is quit exquisite.
