Finding a credible screen writer to colaberate...

Screenwriters have the same woe many of us writers do. We want to get published, they want to get movies made of their work. It's even harder for them because for us, there's always an avenue to publish our work. For the screenwriter, unless they can coax a bunch of film students or someone with camera equipment, or a studio to make their films, they're hanging out a the coffee shops hoping for a break, it's very very difficult. My friend's son is a screenwriter. It's finding a way to get their foot in the door which is very hard for them because there are millions of them out there all hoping for the same break.
There are some book publishers who will shop screenplays or put your work in front of the right people. There are people networks who come into books and decide they want to make a movie of it. However, again, percentage ways, it's a very very low figure of books that make it into being a movie.
And if you did meet someone, here's the tick: Big studios are all about big named actors appearing in the film. No big names, no big producers with big money. For big names, you need something marketable that will bring in a lot of people.
Independent films are a great market and they may not take a lot of money to get made. You can check out some film schools and post an ad on their bulletin board about your project to see if you get any bites. If it's artsy enough, you may get an award. The problem is coaxing a whole film crew to come to your home town to film it which takes money, which take investors. Investors seldom make their money back on indie films. Most budding screenwriters do them to get credits and to get their foot in the door. Most of them use their own money.
Newagey, metaphysical themes are tough. I have friends who are pushing these type of films and it's hard getting people to want to invest in them. My friend in Hawaii has been trying for years. Incredible films like "The Last Mimzy" wind up getting dumbed down by the studios with so many cliches that the original message gets lost.
This is not to discourage you, this is to let you know what you're up against, so you can be realistic and decide how you wish to proceed. The best way is to write a treatment. You can google movie treatments on the net and get some examples. They are roughly like a synopsis for film. You can take a treatment to a studio or network to see about getting some interest.
Do your research, do your homework, learn the business, so you can better position yourself. Most of all, be realistic.
Chaeya, thanks for all the insight.Like I said, it is kind of like a'bucket list' thing; I want us to go out with a bang! I am not looking for a block buster.I just want to be able say 'we published a book'. We did, I went the vanity route, but we accomplished our goal.
So I research film classes, well, them maybe that would be okay. I now want to say our book will be a movie. I know, I dream big.I will take your advise about places to start. Thanks again! Malika

The Secrets of the Unwritten Book has so many opportunities for a great movie. It has magestic scenes, creative costume designs, robotics for green aliens with big green eyes and humanoid machines with equipment coming out of their heads. There is colossal space ship with computer monitoring stations and coffin auditorium with angels, fairies, pixies, gnomes and more, sleeping under hypnosis.
When the characters speak, colors are eminated.
I have great songs already picked out for the story.
My home town is an enexpensive place to film charming stone bungalows and coffeee shops.
Do you have any suggetions how to go about finding a credible screen writer or the proper way to introduce the story to a movie studio? I know the stories are a dime a dozen and it is a crap shoot to get your work before someone.
I always dreamed big; I thought I could fly, but my wings always failed. I thought that fairies danced in the water fountain...I thought Leprechauns lived in my wall...I wrote about it all with my co-author. Now, I want to see it become a reality. The closest thing to dreams coming true on this planet is to make a movie come to life.
Where do I begin to do it right? Malika
