Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I realized I never came back to this post after I read "Magic Bleeds".

I loved it!!

Ilona Andrews posted on her site @ 5/13/10: "MAGIC BLEEDS is one of those pivotal books that can either make or break the series. Vital changes take place. Kate’s heritage comes to light and the effect on her life is catastrophic. She loses everything. It’s probably one of the grimmer books we’ve written, but it’s also the most relationship heavy.

The Kate series moves forward with each book. The relationship between Kate and Curran has to go somewhere as well. This is not a minor plot point that could’ve been negotiated in a couple of pages and shoved aside. This was a major issue that had to have its own book. Kate’s ancestry bites her in the ass, Curran’s history emerges, and they have to pick fight or flight. Eventually all prospective couples reach the point of no return: that spot in the relationship when they have to decide if they are together or not. This is the book where Kate and Curran decide. They both know that whichever way they go, there is no turning back.

The enemy Kate faces in this book is the most powerful person we’ve written to date. When she shattered the blood sword, she knew there would be consequences. Well, the consequences arrive and smash her life to pieces.

But no matter how grim, MAGIC BLEEDS ends with hope. It ties the plot threads raised in the previous three books, clears the field, and weaves new ones, so the characters can move on to new and exciting adventures."

I think this book made the series (definitely didn't break it, IMHO)! A definite must-read for all UF fans!

message 3: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) I also loved it Steph! I thought Ilona and Gordon did an awesome job on this book!! I love love love Curran! Their banter and verbal sparring crack me up! I constantly found myself laughing out loud at this book!

And as I was reading the book I kept hearing Ilona in my head from seeing her at the signing at Powell's here in Oregon... ;)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I was LOL too! Such a GREAT book! My favorite of the year, so far.

Just haaaad to throw that out there again, didn't cha?! LOL! J/K! I'm still green with envy! Think she'll come to Japan? hehe

message 5: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) LOL sorry Steph! It was just so cool! I'm hoping to go to another one this month with Adrian Phoenix... ;) Hmmm something tells me she likely won't go to Japan :(:(

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 82 comments Ilona Andrews and Adrian Phoenix signings, Suz? Sigh...

Want to adopt me? I'm completely self-sufficient. ;P

message 7: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Jun 23, 2010 11:00PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Me too, Me too! :) Dang, girl! Adrian Phoenix too?! That's awesome! Enjoy and report back to share all the good tidbits.

And, just so ya know, I've now gone from green with envy (calmly thinking, "Ah, that's nice she got to meet & chat with such an awesome author") to glowing green with full blown wicked jealousy ("WHAT?! How many more awesome authors is she gonna get to meet? Why don't my fav authors come to the places I live?!)! hehe >:)

message 8: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Schwartz (jenny_schwartz) Definitely report back, pls! Ilona said she didn't dare visit Australia for fear Gordon would refuse to leave! So I'll have to live the author signing experience secondhand ;)

message 9: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments We are all living vicariously through you, Susan, so don't let us down. LOL!

message 10: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) LOL u ladies are cracking me up, well I have some bad news, I discovered that the Adrian Phoenix signing is the same night as the release of Eclipse and I already bought my tickets for Eclipse!!! You'd think that a paranormal author would pay attention to stuff like that!! :(

message 11: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Schwartz (jenny_schwartz) *envy* Suz, your problem is too many great happenings in your neighbourhood--which is a fantastic problem. Enjoy Eclipse :)

*****Series Spoiler Alert*****

By Gordon on June 20, 2010
Stolen from Ilona:

Curran looked at me. He looked at the vampire behind me. The bloodsucker had shriveled to a dry grey husk.

There we go, all of my fucked up blood on display. It’s one thing to know you’re mated to Roland’s daughter. It’s another to see it in action.

Curran looked back at me. “How’s that knee?”

“Peachy.”

“Right. Let’s get some ice on that. Can you walk, or should I carry you?”

I glowered at him. “I could still kick your ass even with one leg.”

“You would have to catch me first, gimp.” He started toward the restaurant.

I followed him. “I’m not a gimp.”

“I’m sorry, how insensitive of me. Physically challenged.”

“Why did I even mate with you?”

He flashed a grin at me. “Chemistry, baby.”

Argh. “Don’t talk to me.”

He pulled me to him.

I stopped. “What about the other navigator?”

“He’s fine,” Curran said. “Out like a light. I heard his heartbeat.”

He’d fainted. Just like Ghastek. Defective vampire, my ass. I turned. “We should get him out of the street.”

“No. It’s enough I had to save his ass from his own vampire. I’m not a street cleaner.”

“What if someone runs over him?”

“The world will be a better place.”

“Curran!”

“No,” he said. “Knee, ice, and then, if I’m feeling extra benevolent, I’ll bring you the phone so you can call his daddy at the Casino and let him know to come and collect him.”

Katyana | 23 comments Jenny wrote: "Gorgeous. I think I'm going to have to re-read Magic Bleeds -- yes, already! :)"

Haha, the minute - literally - that I finished Magic Bleeds, I pulled Magic Bites off the shelf and re-read the whole series. I think I was just so in awe of how well-done Bleeds was, I felt the need to re-immerse in the whole thing. :-)

message 16: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Schwartz (jenny_schwartz) Glad to know I'm not the only compulsive re-reader :)

I've noticed that, DarkHeart. I'm bummed I missed the posting of Chapters 1 & 2. Did you get those before they were taken down?

I try to remember to pop over there every coupl'a weeks to see what Gordon's posted. :)

"Kate Daniels" is a series I would definitely re-read. I'm not a big re-reader, so much new stuff to read, but that one is I would enjoy.

message 18: by Christine (new)

Christine | 16 comments I got "Magic Bleeds" the day it was released and ever since then I´m kind of torn between reading it and postponing. Not because I don´t want to read it but because I love the series so much and it´s such a ling time until the next Kate book that I just want it to last.
I know it´s strange and I know that you can re-read it, but there´s just nothing like the first time!

message 19: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments No, it's not strange. I'm that way with certain series. That one though, I just couldn't wait! It was excellent! Don't blame you for wanting to hold off a while though. Those long wait times are killer.

message 20: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) Ha love that snippet Steph! Thanks for posting! You gotta read it Christine!! It's so worth it, even with the wait til the next one!!!!!

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Posted by Sharon (here) Post #26: this is free!! from IIona Andrews

http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/...

"This isn't a short story or a novella. This is a collection of scenes written by Gordon Andrews as a companion to our Kate Daniels series of books. These scenes illustrate the point of view of Curran, the Beast Lord of Atlanta and are provided in gratitude to our readers for all of their support. This collection isn't meant to stand on its own as an independent work of fiction."

message 23: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Per Ilona's site:

Q: How many books does each series have?
A: We are contracted for seven novels in Kate Daniels series.

YAY! So, three more "Kate Daniels" books to come. :D

"I'm killing one of my favorite characters and I don't like it."

Eek!

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Oh dear. The first person I thought of was Derek when I read your post DarkHeart. It fits with the "poor Julie" comment.

message 26: by Kay (new)

Kay (red_robin_70) | 6 comments I thought of Derek as soon as I read it too Amy, but haven't they already put us through enough heartache with him in Magic Strikes?!
I don't know why, but I fear for either Andrea or Raphael....

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 82 comments I think they basically confirmed (in a chat) a future Derek and Julie pairing - so I'm not thinking him. Maybe Jim?

Oh no. :( I think it makes sense to balance the reality of the supe world. And Ilona doesn't kill off characters often (unlike Charlaine Harris who I think kills off way too many characters). But wow. I hope it isn't Jim -- I really like Jim.

Kay wrote: "I thought of Derek as soon as I read it too Amy, but haven't they already put us through enough heartache with him in Magic Strikes?!

No doubt. Derek has gone through enouh.

message 29: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments :( I don't even want to think about it. But, she does say "one of my ...." so, maybe it's not someone who is particularly a "fan" favorite? Yes, I'm grasping at straws.

message 30: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Schwartz (jenny_schwartz) It better not be Jim. I want to see his romance with the vegetarian tiger -- and drat, I can't remember her name!

message 31: by Kindlelicious (new)

Kindlelicious | 39 comments Dali is the vegetarian tiger, and yes, I wanted to see that too!

I am really hoping it will only be a minor character if someone has to die, though I can't think of a single one I wouldn't be upset about.

message 32: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am so excited b/c Dark and Stormy Knights by P.N. Elrod is released tomorrow and it has a Kate story!

I did the same thing! Couldn't help my self :)

message 35: by Vered (new)

Vered (veredi) | 41 comments Someone's going to die?? I hate it when they feel the need to do that.
Steph, I'm with you, holding tight to that straw. Favorite character doesn't have to be a major one. Right??

message 36: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Schwartz (jenny_schwartz) Dali! How could I have forgotten? It better not be her that dies. Actually, I'm pretty protective of all the shapeshifters. Do you think Ilona could kill off one of the People instead? ;)

And according to the bookshop, my copy of Dark and Stormy Knights is in the mail! I can't wait. And isn't the title a great pun? Love puns.

message 37: by Kindlelicious (new)

Kindlelicious | 39 comments Oh maybe it will be Ghastek! Maybe he is her favorite...he does have some great lines, and I bet it's fun to write semi-villians. Here's hopin!

message 38: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Schwartz (jenny_schwartz) Ghastek is a great semi-villain. I love the way you feel you're interacting with him when it's actually a vampire in the action. I love the scene where Kate thinks she'll have to kill the vamp because Ghastek's lost control of it -- and Ghastek says No, the only problem is he burnt his tongue on hot coffee LOL

Still, I'm willing to sacrifice Ghastek to keep Jim and Dali :)

message 39: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Here's a direct link to the snippet from Magic Slays.

message 44: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Ilona also provided a snippet of her short in Dark and Stormy Knights.

"Our short story, A Questionable Client, is set in Kate Daniels world, before the events of the series take place. Kate Daniels is tired. She put in a long shift at the Mercenary Guild, she has blood on her shoes and she wants to go home. Unfortunately, a merc’s job is never done and instead of a well deserved rest, she has to bodyguard a VIP client, a man named Saiman. Kate has seen many strange magic beings in her time with the Mercenary Guild, but she has never met one like this."

message 46: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Schwartz (jenny_schwartz) My copy's in the mail. Wish it had made it here for the weekend. Regina, how are you resisting the temptation? I'd be going to bed early -- say 3pm :) -- and reading!

message 47: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I read it last mighty. I really enjoyed it.

I might have to ambush the postman -- bring me Dark and Stormy Knights or else!

message 49: by Jenny (last edited Jul 29, 2010 05:45PM) (new)

Jenny Schwartz (jenny_schwartz) Dark and Stormy Knights by P.N. Elrod arrived in the mail! I thoroughly enjoyed "A Questionable Client". I liked the back story for Kate and Saiman, and how strong and consistent Kate's character is. Nice touch of mythology too. And I'm not saying any more for fear of spoilers

message 50: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Good to know, Jenny. Thanks for the update. I'm anxious to get my hands on it.
