Yes she is. I'm really disappointed in her attitude. Being snarky is one thing, being a royal bitch is another.
OMG! I just saw this. I've been debating her books for ages, but now I won't bother. First of all, she's just plain rude and second if someone is writing purely for the money, generally speaking, it shows! Do you reckon she realises that sometimes an author will be tested through a borrowed book, before money is spent on them? I got Poison Study from the library, and loved it so much I brought the full trilogy!
Yes, it's a shame. Another author is running a contest for her and she had her add in the same crap that if you don't win the book you must buy it Jun 1st-7th.
I'm just going to come out and say it: What an arrogant, childish brat (or the other "b" word, haha). I LOVE her Cal Leandros series and really enjoyed the Trixa book, but now I will NEVER buy another one of her books. And I've had her on my "authors-on-auto-buy" list since the first book came out so that is saying something.This part is SO arrogant:
"That one or two characters you thought were the best thing since sliced bread..."
Seriously?! Did you just actually call the characters you created the best thing since sliced bread? I'm drowning in her arrogance over here. Geez.
And this one:

You know what, Rob? I'm sorry you lost your non-writing job, but why don't you go get another one so you don't have to "beg" for that 48 cents. I bet that KFC employee you ridiculed online - for the entire world to read - would switch jobs with you.
I am disgusted... I have Roadkill on my to-read shelf at home and now I'm considering dropping it in the "donations" box at my library. I love Cal and Niko (from her series), but I think knowing this about the author is going to color my perception of the book.

@Theresa-you nailed it. I'm really torn because I wanted to read The Grimrose Path, but am disgusted with her attitude. Every job has it's ups and downs but I hardly think that she's in the same boat as some in this difficult economy. I doubt anyone would see her in line at a food bank.
I don't understand why she did not try a more positive way to get her readers to help out. She should have said, If you like any of my books could each reader lend out the first book in each of my series to two friends. If more readers find and like my books, this will help me to continue writing them and help me to continue to get them published. Thank you. Maybe if her sales increased on the 2nd book of the Trixa series the publisher would change their mind and continue this series. Also if more found the Cal Leandros series she would increase her royalty checks. I know my library doen't even carry her books. Maybe she could have asked her readers to request their local libraries purchase her books then more readers would discover her writing and purchase copies themselves. I have found many authors from my local library and then went out and bought the book or books just to have my own copy. She definately went about this the wrong way.
Wow Rob Thurman has a serious Diva complex.Form previous posts i see she has achived the exact opposite of what she wanted. I really enjoy her books, and as long as writes good books i'll buy them, but she has obviously alienated (potential)readers.
And i agree with twinfish2, if she were smart she'd have found a more positive approach to promote her books.

And when you buy a book and let ten of your friends borrow it....11 people read something it took me 9 mos to write and I *still* only received 48 cents...And for the people who don't like my snarky attitude, *but* like my books and proclaim they'll only buy them in used stores so I don't get a dime out of them--good luck, because if I don't write them, they won't be there.Well. I understand how painful it must be to have a series fail, but to take it out on readers is astonishing. Readers = money. You don't have to kiss my ass, but don't go kicking it either. We're all having hard times financially, so of course we understand where she's coming from, but this is definitely a case of going too far. Incredibly off-putting. She should be ranting privately to her fellows in the publishing industry rather than making her readership feel like they've failed her. Nasty attitude.

If Thurman had tried to be more positive, and proactive in the selling of her books maybe she would get fans. This was most definitely not the right way to go about it.
I'll never read another book by her.
I definitely think that she could have handled her disappointment better! There are TONS of innovative marketing ideas out there that could have helped generate more interest... I have seen her books in the store many times and have contemplated purchasing a few, but authors that I had read always won out. Well, she has made my decision VERY easy because now I won't even consider reading her books.
If she would have been able to endear (vs. alienate) herself to readers, I think she would find that many of us are incredibly loyal to our favorite/preferred authors...
Well I am thinking about removing the first Leandros book from my PBS Wish List after reading this. It's holding valuable WL real estate. I'm a single mother with a limited budget. I try to find a new author used first. If I love the one I get then I'll by some others new. I got my 1st Charlaine Harris book used and loved it. She's now an auto buy for me and I've purchased probably 20 of her books brand new. I would have purchased more new but she's not one of those prolific authors that releases several books a year. So telling people about how much they are damaging her by loaning her books out to friends or buying them used is just shooting herself in the foot. Look at all the potential new book buyers she has alienated just in this thread. If I had received that 1st book by her from PBS cheap and loved it-chances are good that I would have bought a few of her books new. I can appreciate the fact that she wants to be a writer for a living. It's a dream job for many people. But she could have gone about this in a totally different way that would have had fans rallying to support her.
Another point: I first heard about her on Paperbackswap which is a used book trading site. If I wasn't on there trading used books and reading the forums I wouldn't know her from Adam.
I was just reading through her website a bit and there's a post on June 12th asking people to buy one of her books and after they read it to set it free somewhere to hopefully find new fans.

I was going to write Roc/Penguin (her publisher) to let them know how she is hurting herself, her sales, and THEIR sales by writing such things, but they don't make it easy to find a place to email. Oh well. :)
what a total butthead! Many established authors are putting books out on ereads, (JA Konrath is one), to save themselves and the readers money. Good author's also get out there and go to conventions, send out newsletters, work with their fan base (Karen Marie Moning, Kelley Armstrong are two). Thurman doesn't seem to have the smarts to try alternative routes, or the charm and personality to have a fan base. Time to quit writing! or hire someone to portray you :)
Well I didn't read the original tweet but libraries have been around for years. I don't remember how long ago Alexander the great was but supposedly he had a big one..I'll give this author a break and say she just put her foot in it... bad... we all get it wrong sometimes and if you're famous, when you get it wrong a million people know about it.
I didn't pay for my copy of Nightlife but if she sends me a self addressed stamped envelope, I'll put forty-eight cents in it. If it cost forty-eight cents at the bookstore, I wouldn't have had to get my copy from someone else. Even paperbacks are outrageous these days.
But rather than hassling me, she ought so go after the big boys- like city public libraries- and mmm used bookstores... and don't forget that big cardboard box you can find in hospital waiting rooms with all sorts of paperbacks in it. That must really piss her off- the little paperback swap stations...

I have already done reviews of her first two books and I think I will remove them from the board.I feel for any KFC worker that read that awful thing she said.And I never did get this old polyester thing people that think they are so high and mighty use to ridicule others with,but since that`s almost all any of us wear maybe we could put it to sleep for crying out loud.
I might wear polyester but you can't see my thong through it. Seeing your underwear went out with Madonna in the eighties. No matter where you work, if I can see your underwear choices through your clothes, I'm probably going to make fun of you.
On the Mean Girl tip, I saw a chick the other day wearing a white skirt...with polka-dot undies. The dots were multi-colored.Travesty.
@Irene-I like some of her work but I'm sorry to say that if you read through a lot of her posts that you will find she has a general attitude of superiority and condesension. She sticks her foot in her mouth quite often....
