melbourne (cocho) I've lived here most of my life and have adopted most of the aspects of American culture but the ONE thing I will not give in to ever is calling football, "soccer".

Now I don't want to disrespect the game of pigskin but really, calling a sport where one rarely uses his/her feet is hardly football at all...

viva el futbol!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I call it "football" as well. I mean, what the fuck is "soccer"? How the fuck does one "socc?"

I also refer to the field as "pitch", a game as "match", and everyone knows the rules of football aren't called "rules", they're called "laws."

message 3: by Carlie (new)

Carlie yeah it doesnt make any sense at all

message 4: by melbourne (new)

melbourne (cocho) Gus: Indeed, I would also like to know what "socc" means... i thought i was the only one...

message 5: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill Frikkiin' A right KD. The best seats are always on the 50 YARD line.

Actually though, the sport is American Football, we just don't use it here. Do Canadians refer to their sport as Canadian Football? I really don't know - my guess is that they don't. Anyone know for sure?

message 6: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) No they do not, at least the ones I know. Why don't you just call it tackle?

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Or bastardized Rugby?

message 8: by melbourne (new)

melbourne (cocho) gus... that's exactly what i've been calling it all these years, well pansy rugby really but bastardized rugby sounds better... it has a more southern feel to it...

message 9: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill Nope....never. Football it is..and football it shall remain. The best damn sport EVER. Besides...the Brits came up with Soccer first.

message 10: by Sally (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | -1 comments I hate that boots are called trunks here. What the fuck is that?

message 11: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill Sally, did you mean "Booties", as in "junk in her trunk"?

message 12: by Sally (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | -1 comments No, boot, as in the boot of the car. My cousins grew up in Paupa New Guinea, so they have all these affected Australian/New Zealand language quirks. They too bristle at the soccer/football overlap, as well as the boot/trunk one. There are a few more, but I find them all pretentious and absurd.

message 13: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill Ahhh - very cool Sally. Me n my friends used to watch quite a bit of Australian Rules Football....Footy I believe. I do enjoy all forms of the sport. The Australian rugby teams have the best, and most profane drinking songs.

message 14: by Novi (new)

Novi Bobby Hey Sally, what language do they speak in Papua New Guinea? It's our quiet neighbor on the east but I know nothing about them.

So I don't mind switching my mindset from soccer to football, vice versa. But metric system rules!

message 15: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) I've not really watched much football before recently. I can thank my friend, Susie, for my newfound interest. She's teaching me about the game (hey! I don't watch tv. Gimme a break.). She affectionately calls it "footie." She also carries a sweet Bayern tote around with her when she travels.

message 16: by melbourne (new)

melbourne (cocho) Heidi: Bayern!? Argh!

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Shut up, Mel. Bayern rocks. And if you got shit to talk about Man U, there's gonna be some smacking going 'round.

message 18: by melbourne (new)

melbourne (cocho) Man United. Oh, even worse!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get me started on Sir Alex. What a wanker. The only player I can say I like on that team is Tevez.

I'd best prepare myself for a smack then?

L.F.C.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Go on, get started on Sir Alex...say whatever you want, but 20+ seasons, 12 league titles, 5 FA Cups, and 2 Champions League triumphs...wanker my ass!

LFC? Liverpool? No problem. I have a lot of respect for that team.

message 20: by melbourne (new)

melbourne (cocho) Some people/teams you love to hate... Man United, Barca and Inter and Boca Jrs. are my four... Man united and Barca top that list... there's no doubt Ferguson is a great coach, however he's got a wanker attitude supreme

message 21: by Sally (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | -1 comments What language are you two speaking?

message 22: by Not Bill (new)

Not Bill Mel....ya gotta get up at 6 in the a.m. and start drinking. By 10 a.m, it starts making sense.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Mel, I LOATHE Boca Jrs. with every fiber in my soul. See, I'm a born River Plate fan, so we're conditioned to hate anything associated with those swine.

I'll agree Ferguson's a prickly bastard. I'm glad he's giving Real Madrid the business right now over their trying to poach Cristiano Ronaldo away from them.

message 24: by melbourne (new)

melbourne (cocho) Well, we have something in common then... I too am an ardent millonarios supporter!!!

message 25: by Carlie (new)

Carlie wait, was the NB comment to mel supposed to be to sally? Well even if it wasn't, I think Sally, you can take that advice. I guess alcohol is the translator to this strange language they are speaking here.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Carlie, just tune in to ESPN 2 in the afternoons from 11:30 to 5PM, while the European Football Championship is on right now, and you'll catch on to this strange language we speak.

message 27: by melbourne (new)

melbourne (cocho) Gus, who are your picks for the Cup? I like Portugal and Spain, but Germany and the Netherlands are strong. How about that romp the Croats gave the Germans this morning, and that cross for the second goal... absolutely brilliant.

It's also wonderful that River one their 33rd clausura. Unfortunately, I have a feeling Buonanotte might not be there next season.

message 28: by Tesse (new)

Tesse (hooksinmyhead) I was going to tell you to lay off Man U as well.

I don't have a problem with you calling anyone on the team (or any team) a wanker though.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

My buddy Susie is at the Euros right now rooting for her beloved Germany. No doubt she stalking some poor Croatian fans to stomp mercilessly.

I have a soft spot for the Dutch, because you know they're brilliant, but they always find a way to fuck up in the most royal of fashions.

Diego Buonanote no doubt played his last match with River last Sunday. There's going to be a massive bidding war from the best European clubs for his services.

message 30: by melbourne (new)

melbourne (cocho) ...the Spaniards also have the same tendency as the Dutch...

My guess is that mighty mouse will end up in Spain.

message 31: by melbourne (new)

melbourne (cocho) damn germans beat portugal... again!!!!!!!
