Diane ~Firefly~ So if my dish is a Mandarin Pasta Salad that I think of as healthy (has veggies, fruit, chicken and almonds in it) would Eat, Shrink, & Be Merry count for a cookbook?

Oooh....I hope so. I've got this one on my TBR list, too. Great idea, Rachel! I had forgotten all about this book.

If your dish contains nuts, then May Contain Nuts would work for A. Pomegranate Soup works for B- the book description says there are recipes.

message 59: by Sally (new)

Sally (sallysimply) | 537 comments How much does the book have to connect to your dish? For example, if I choose chocolate cake, would I need to do a cake/dessert cookbook for D or could I do something like "The Book Lover's Cookbook," which has a recipe for chocolate cake?

message 60: by Angie (new)

Angie (tikkledpink) | 37 comments I want to bring watermelon to the party. So I'm going to read The Watermelon King. Now, I love salt on my watermelon so I was thinking that I'd also read The Salt Eaters. Can I read two from option "A" or do they have to be two different options?

The cookbook should have a section on desserts/cake but wouldn't have to be limited to just that- if the Book Lover's Cookbook has a cake recipe- it would work

Thanks! I've never heard of her blog before - I'll have to add it to my list of cooking blogs that I already follow. I'm glad to hear that you liked her book - I wasn't sure if I really wanted to read Like Water for Chocolate or not, so I'm happy to have another option.

It explains the science behind cooking and includes some practice recipes. So I was hoping I could use it for: C. Read a food-related non-fiction book (non-cookbook).

message 78: by Leigh Ann (new)

Leigh Ann (leighannflyingonsilverwings) I just want to make sure I'm on the right track with this one. Only book A. has to have the dish in the title, right? I'm going to bring my favorite pineapple upside down cake, and my plan is to read Murder Takes the Cake for A. Then for B. read Chili Con Corpses since it has recipes. Does this work?

They work

message 80: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments Okay, I am a little bit confused. For parts A and B, does it actually need to be a part of your recipe? Like if I wanted to bring Apple Pie, I couldn't read Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder for A, even though that is a food in the recipe? And do I need to make sure that the recipes in my book for Part B have an ingredient that is in the Apple Pie?

message 81: by Dlmrose, Moderator Emeritus (new)

Dlmrose | 18433 comments Mod
If your recipe for apple pie includes chocolate chips, then you could explain that connection and use Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder for A. Since Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder is a novel with recipes you could choose to claim it for B and choose another book for A. The novel with recipes in B does not need to relate to your recipe- you could read The Perils of Paella for B.
A doesn't need recipes- just a title that relates
B doesn't need a specific word in the title - it just needs to be a novel with recipes

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments The only dish I can really think of is Philadelphia Cream Cheese Pie, which is so incredibly easy to make (no baking required and it makes 2 pies) that I end up making it quite frequently to take and share... So I was thinking:

PART B: Hot Lunch by Alex Bradley (has 4-5 recipes scattered throughout)
PART D: Icebox Pies by Lauren Chattman (cookbook of 100 pies you don't have to bake)

How does that sound?

Tulips are actually edible, at least the petals of most species are. You can make salads with them or put them on cakes take make them look prettier.

Dee (austhokie) | 8948 comments If i have a recipie that uses eggs...can this book count: Eggsecutive Orders or does the ingredient need to be separate? also, do I need to actually provide the recipe or just say what I would bring - while I'm sure the recipe could be found on the internet, my mom isn't a fan of sharing the one she makes (which I also do)...but I can say why it is significant

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments okay, i don't cook so can I bring something store bought to the virtual block party like cookies? Cookies have sugar in them. Since my item will be store bought, there really isn't a recipe for it. Therefore, there would be no recipe to put up.

You don't need to put the recipe up- you just need to post why you would bring them- and be specific- a bag of oreos... sugar cookies from a bakery... etc.

And if you want to do option A, your title could be any book with "cookie" in the title Tough Cookie, The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food, Models Don't Eat Chocolate Cookies

For option D (cookbook related to my dish) would The I Hate to Cook Book: 50th Anniversary Edition work? I rarely cook anymore and would be bringing something delicious that wasn't cooked by me - brownie bites, from the bakery at our grocery store.

One of the chapter titles is "Potluck Suppers or How to Bring the Water for the Lemonade" - but I think that might be pushing my luck!
