Kami (katmiv) It's so funny how real life versus fictional fantasy almost completely contradict themselves for me.

In real life I am drawn to a man who can make me laugh. So much can be said for a guy with a sense of humor. I also love the hot nerd. My, what a big brain he has... ;) Nothing beats a laid back beta IMO. I can't stand alphas in real life. They are usually arrogant and quite frankly, self-absorbed asses. No thank you!

For my fictional characters, however, I like the fierce protector. The man who will do whatever is necessary to protect his woman...and usually this is an alpha characteristic. I also love the dark, wounded hero rife with both physical and emotional scars. He just gets to me. To see into a man's soul and know that he has survived more than you can even fathom and yet he still goes on...love him! Most of my favorite heroes are the strong, but wounded type. I also love the one's who are a little unsure of themselves. They don't think they are deserving of the woman, but in actuality he is quite an amazing person.

*sigh* I can go on and on and on. So thankful there are so many wonderful authors & books out there to provide me with these strong, amazing heroes.

Oh, I dearly love the quiet but deadly type of hero!

I'm shivering at the thought of Christine Feehan heroes really walking around! :)

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 474 comments I guess when you are reading a book that you can love the alpha heroes for all the good traits whilst not having to deal with all the annoying things that go with it.

I don't think the world is ready for CFs type of hero yet, I think the whole female population would swoon and have a major case of drooling!

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) Suzanne,
I definitly agree with you
But I did get tired of all her darn animals she kept adding,I think they took a whole lot away from the heros.
Liked her first 5 or 6 books,Jacque is one of my alltime fav heros

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 474 comments Jacques was good, he had the whole insane and tortured thing going on, and I liked his attempt at making bread in Dark Celebration, that made me laugh out loud : ) But Gregori and Ilya are my favourite of all her heroes *lustful sigh* they are so sexy.

I have to say I haven't noticed the animal thing, apart from in Ivorys book with her pack of wolves. Although she does seem to invole nature in all the magic things they do.

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) The Chritmas Celebration is the one that got me,the mangy(her description)wolf running around outside while they were trying to have a good time-I really didn`t like him there because I was really enjoying the story until he arrived on the scene-I never read another one after that.
It`s fun to talk about this now, but I didn`t like those whacked out bears that were business what? business bears?
Yes I like Gregori too, thats my prob with those animals then I have to miss out on her excellent and I do mean excellent heros-I know you know what I mean about her heros huh?

Emily (ipodaddict18) | 87 comments I love a good bad boy.
like the guy with the bad@ss motorcycle and maybe a tattoo or two not alot though and great abbs and the mysterious attitude were you cant tell what there thinking or feeling! I like a guy thats unpredictable and exciting. He has to have some kind of bad@ss gun too. I find that soo hot! They have to like dogs too. They cant be really emotional either I'm not a big fan of showing much less talking about feelings and crap like that so he also has to be able to like read my emotions or guess them something like that.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 474 comments Spencer is hot, I like it when his hair is long, yum!

KathyAnne- I know exactly what you mean about her heroes, they are so mega alpha, but all mushy inside, in regards to their lifemates anyways! You should try reading them again, I can't remember which one is after Dark Celebration but the latest one was really good

Bears, what bears?

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) Suzanne,
It`s been so long since I`ve read them-but isn`t ther kind of a bar, funny biz kind of place in the books with wacko bears with attitude ,as the owners?
They don`t take anything off anyone as I remember-am I in the wrong series, help me out?

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 474 comments Are you thinking of Sherrilyn Kenyons Dark Hunters series? The only bar I can think of is that inn where everyone stays lol

♡Meme♡Reads love♡ | 203 comments My favorite heroes are... My number one and absolute fav is Zsadist from the BDB series. I just loved how Bella took care of him and wanted to be with him and help him through his issues. Thats something I would have done. Then comes Edward from the Twilight Series. He was soo caring and loving and understanding and protective of Bella and he was a virgin.. He just kinda touch my heart. Jamie from Outlander is to me just a man of worth he's like all of these men in one. Alpha, beta, Warrior protective and just someone you want to be with.

So you tell me what does all this say about me? Cause I'm unsure myself because I like to many different personality's

Meme, I think it shows you like deep, caring, strong characters. Those are traits that you value.

♡Meme♡Reads love♡ | 203 comments Well that definitely sound like me. :) But I think I'm missing one more character because I do like them to have a silly side to them. Like Rhage from BDB or like James Mallory from Gentle Rouge

Mel Spencer (melspen) | 29 comments I Like my Bad Boys to have something in them that wakes up when they meet their Loves. I also like them to reveal their feelings in a way the chicka has a figure out in order to realize what's going on. Getting to a point where he can even say the words must be a journey for him. And it helps if the author can make me feel like I have a love/hate relationship with him. Where my sympathy is shared between the two. I don't like the "they meet, hate each other, go through something, like each other, go through something else, fall in love, stuff, Far too predictable. I hate seeing whats coming. I think that is what I love about the BDB books, you know what will happen, but the journey to get there is anyones guess. Who saw Jane dying?? Not Me, I was pretty pissed when it happened, but, when I kept reading, I was more than okay with how it played out.

Melinda, I agree with you about the awakening aspect.

message 73: by Sandy (new)

Sandy Hyatt-James (sandyhyatt-james) The comments are fascinating. I once started a thread on another site about how women are hardwired to go for the alpha male, and then bemoaned the fact that many women have become so strident in their quest to be seen as equal, they've emasculated men.
For example, urinals in Scandanavian countries have have been taken out of government offices and replaced with sit-down toilets, because it's considered aggressive to men to stand up and pee.
When I pointed out that this had gone too far, I was shot at from all angles from an indignant group of women, saying they didn't like alpha males and that if women had gained the upper hand in the gender war, then so be it.
My point is, from reading the comments here, it's clear that most women would prefer a man to be a real man and not a milk-sop.
Alpha males have been reflected in literature right right from Mr Darcy, to Edward Cullen. These men are what women want because they hit straight to the complex chambers of women's psyche - and stay there.
Or, to put it another way, women have to get it between the ears before they get it anywhere else, and a milk-sop would only reach as far as the ankles.
(P.S. Mr Darcy would never sit down to pee!)

Mel Spencer (melspen) | 29 comments Hey Sandy,

Alpha Men are important and though they may appear to be ignorant to some, and though the Beta make is in some opinions a good mate, I need a hero in a book to make my blood boil in as many different ways as possible.

I hated Edward Cullen. I don't like anything about him, I was team Jacob from the second he was brought into the book. Something about Edward up and leaving when Bella needed him most, never sat well with me. Many people have tried to explain it to me in many different ways, but I was never able to get past that.

Galla Sandy wrote: "For example, urinals in Scandanavian countries have have been taken out of government offices and replaced with sit-down toilets, because it's considered aggressive to men to stand up and pee. ..."

I'm really fascinated by this... what exactly were the arguments for saying it's aggressive for men to stand up and pee? Where were they pointing those things, lol? Besides, if I could easily stand up while peeing, it would dispel many of my public toilet-related fears. Nothing nastier than stopping at the only gas station along a 50-mile stretch and realizing you're going to have to try very hard not to let any part of your body touch anything in that bathroom.

Like Rachel said, I think there's usually a significant (and sometimes a huge) difference between what readers like in book/movie heroes and what we like in real-life partners, too. I think Barrons is a great character and really love him in the books--but no way would I want to date him in real life.

message 76: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyfraser65) | 35 comments Ditto Rachel... In my younger days (pre-marriage), I went out with the arrogant alpha and got my heart trodden on and handed back to me. Then I met my hubby, who at first glance was the opposite of alpha! He was nothing like any of the guys I had been out with before and I was reluctant to go out with him.... 25 years later and counting, love him to bits. He makes me laugh, he is supportive but he is definitely NOT the a-typical alpha.

However, I LOVE reading about the strong protective type hero in my books. I guess that's one of the reasons I love reading so much I can have my cake and eat it too!

I'm not really attracted to alpha-ish guys I know in real life. Maybe one day I will meet one who I do like that way. I tend to like beta-ish men in real life.
