Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Darn right. Thats what we would steer with.

Latinlandish | 376 comments I am still laughing at all these posts! This is the funniest discussion. Anyway, if Jamie was available I would go, maybe for a summer vacation when we can take some cold baths in the lake. Since I've been to Scotland in the summer and it was still cold and wet, I would bring a really excellent water proof coat with the period design but with modern tech, w secret pockets everywhere, I would also have some Nike Air disguised as 18th century shoes. Since I am 50 like Claire in the 2nd time, no worries about tampons or contraceptives. I would bring lots of cortizone and antibiotics. Diamonds, cash, and I am really in doubt about my contacts... Maybe bifocals, OMG, that would really look bad! I would definitely go for a laser surgery to correct my vision before going through the stones!! Also get some HRT to get things smoother with Jamie...mmmm. I would leave my family, so I could think about them and be back in the right time.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 143 comments Neosporin & band-aids, duct tape that isn't silver, floss, tampons, antibiotics, gems/precious metals. I'm guessing that the shoes back then weren't too comfortable, so maybe a Dr. Scholl's shoe insert.

Everything would be taken out of its original packaging and put into containers that looked correct for the time period.

Gina | 87 comments Something to shave with. I remember in the second book how after getting her underarms waxed Clair said it was the first time that she actually felt completely clean.

Sharonh I'm sure us mature ladies could easily find us some well preserved distinguished highlanders, maybe in their 40's and we could pass as 40 somethings with our relatively pampered upbringings. We'd definitely have to stock up on the medications but at least we don't have to worry about periods and childbirth.

message 56: by Gina (new)

Gina | 87 comments I might also bring something to defend myself with

Sue Erickson | 673 comments I'd bring Advil. I would have trouble keeping up!!!!

Love that post. Well, I guess that wouldn't be a problem, since the laws of that time didn't worry much about cannabis!!

message 59: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (lchacha) | 59 comments OMG, I forgot about birth control pills killing 2-birds with 1-stone! I could deal with natural child birth, but the thought of having my monthly without modern sanitary items makes me shudder.

message 60: by Gina (new)

Gina | 87 comments omg you're totally right. Do you remember when Jamie's sister was pregnanat, I think in the first book, and she had that risky pregnancy. it made me cringe when the midwife had to turn the baby.

message 61: by Sharonh (new)

Sharonh | 472 comments Girls, y'all don't know what you are missing by not having to worry about periods and pregnancy anymore! That is the good thing about menopause...and the biggest plus is that your libido comes back...after all you don't have PMS, headaches (lol...you know what I mean..you're just thrilled he can get it up!), AND most men have mellowed out by then...if they are going to!

message 62: by Gina (new)

Gina | 87 comments Hahah. that sounds great.

My last relationship I was in for 7 years was with a man who was "fixed". Now I find myself realizing how nice it was not to have to worry about contraceptives.

message 65: by Sharonh (new)

Sharonh | 472 comments Well actually I had my tubes tied when I was about 36 or 38...can't remember....but my libido was so low it was awful...until after menopause...then whoa...katy bar the door. LOL. I also went thru early menopause at about 42. I think that was the cause of my low libido but the GYN wanted to load me up on all kinds of hormones and I was afraid of them.

Back on topic....I'd go thru the stones with nothing and try to bring Jamie back thru with ME!!!! HAHA

message 66: by Latinlandish (new)

Latinlandish | 376 comments Sharonh,
I soooo agree with you. It is awesome not to worry about getting pregnant, and since April my libido is totally back. Coincidentally I started to read Outlander at the same time that I got some help from my GYN. I feel like I am back to the happy times when we just fell in love.
I would love to bring Jamie back with me.
And my question is ( maybe this could be a new discussion): How would Jamie react if he were the one to come to the modern times?

message 67: by Sharonh (new)

Sharonh | 472 comments Latinlandish, I bet he would be totally overwhelmed and awed...but he would compensate and then settle into it. I think he'd have a ball just walking around looking at things.

message 68: by Latinlandish (new)

Latinlandish | 376 comments Imagine how happy he would be when he realized all the freedom we women have nowadays! He would be a very busy man!

message 69: by Sharonh (last edited Jan 10, 2011 06:25PM) (new)

Sharonh | 472 comments Well, he is totally devoted to CLaire but if we could make sure she stayed in the 18th Century...then he'd be more ammenable to drinking from a well other than the one he is used to drinking from..if you know what I mean. I mean he even did the deed with Mary McNabb. He musta had the blue ball. LOL. He said she was plain and was missing some teeth, but she had some boobs and her lips were soft. HaHa. One more thing before we get in trouble for being off topic...I bet he "served her well" cuz when the lawyer came to see Jamie to work out things for the annullment from Leghair or whatever...when they ate dinner and were all 'round the table...DG wrote that Mary McNabb served Jamie from the tray and her eyes remained on him too long or something like that but I assume Claire didn't notice. Poor ole Mary hadn't had a man like Jamie in her whole life and I bet he was gentle with her and made sure she was satisfied because ..well its just like Jamie...he is grateful for her "serving" him...so he returns the favor. Ahem...

Wan (wanwaddell) | 564 comments Sharonh wrote: "Back on topic....I'd go thru the stones with nothing and try to bring Jamie back thru with ME!!!! HAHA"

OMG! Can you imagine if Jamie could come back with Claire to the 20th Century? -- the 60's at that.

message 71: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments He would have been horrified, haha. Do you remember his reaction to Bree's bathing suit.

message 72: by Latinlandish (new)

Latinlandish | 376 comments The shock would last maybe a week , until he realized he could enjoy the same freedom!

After all, he was verra open minded even in the 1800's.

He allowed Claire to have a job, and she spoke her mind, and seems like he never hit her after OUtlander, which is amzing for those times.

I think he would fit perfectly in the 60's.
Free love, lots of booze and other things, he would have a blast!

message 73: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 564 comments LOL

message 74: by Sharonh (new)

Sharonh | 472 comments Yeah, I worry about Jamie and Claire sometimes because of their love of strong drink. Seems like every occasion is an occasion for a drink...or they are saying "I need a drink!"

message 75: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments That's funny because I see the opposite. I think it would be alot easier for us to go to the past, then someone from the past to come into the future. Can you image the shock... I think Jamie would hate it. He would hate the congestion and the lack of respect to the earth... He would feel like a fish out of water.

message 76: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 564 comments Sharonh wrote: "Yeah, I worry about Jamie and Claire sometimes because of their love of strong drink. Seems like every occasion is an occasion for a drink...or they are saying "I need a drink!""

Heck! I said that every day (after work).

message 77: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 564 comments Can you imagine Jamie cruising down the road in a Corvette? Now that would be a sight!

message 78: by Latinlandish (new)

Latinlandish | 376 comments I can totally see him... stopping on the red light and checking the lasses!

Although there is a lot congestion, there is also a lot more awareness about human rights and respect for nature. Depends on who he would be around. I think he would find his crowd.

message 79: by Sue (new)

Sue Erickson | 673 comments Hope he doesn't get road rage or the dirk might come out!

message 80: by Coralie (new)

Coralie | 39 comments Sharonh wrote: "Yeah, I worry about Jamie and Claire sometimes because of their love of strong drink. Seems like every occasion is an occasion for a drink...or they are saying "I need a drink!"" Yeah I guess liver disease was a real problem then although drinking alcohol may have often been a necessity in crowded towns where there wasn't ready access to the clean running water and disease was rife although the highlanders should have had plenty of access shouldn't they? No excuses...Getting off the track again I went through an early menopause, same age as you Sharonh and funnily enough it had the same effect on my libido too when all the books said the opposite. Back on track again I think Jamie would do well in the 20th century, I'm sure he would find his way with that sponge of a mind he has and his curiosity, his ability get on with people, his leadership qualities. I can see him living close to the land too. Actually if he went to the sixties he probably would have been the wise elder of a commune (minus all the freelove stuff) with all his practical skills....

message 81: by Sharonh (last edited Jan 13, 2011 07:57AM) (new)

Sharonh | 472 comments Hmmmm, y'all think he might be persuaded to join up with some of the groups hiding out in the mountains waiting for "doomsday"???? You know how he gets his butt in a crack with the opposing factions every time he turns around! LOL. He is likes my kids...he can fall off into the biggest pile of poop than anyone I have ever seen. He and Claire both!

message 82: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherlena) | 22 comments Interesting thread. What would I take and more importantly what preparations would I make prior to going through the stones?

1. flint
2. tika bak: gem
3. gold (universal currency)
4. money, currency for time period going to, and currency for time period returning to - at least enough for a phone call
5. clothes created for time period, but with modern advances in fabrics for warmth, water proofing, venting, etc. And yeah, secret pockets would be invovled.
6. antibiotics
7. tooth brush
8. feminine products - and pray for menopause!
9. underwear!

But before going I'd be sure to do my homework by studying history and inventions. All those classes in school were like pouring water through a sieve; none of it really stuck well enough for me to use, so I'd have to review.

Oh, I'd have my silver fillings removed and porcelain ones in their place. I'd hate to have my teeth draw too much attention.

I can't recall who said they'd have their eyes fixed ahead of time, but I think I'd go that route, too.

Oh, and I'd have the entire battery of vaccinations, that might safe guard my health' too. LOL.

I guess I'd have to give up Coke and I've never been a fan of tea or coffee. Hmmm...I guess it's a sacrifice I'd have to make.

message 83: by Sharonh (new)

Sharonh | 472 comments Cheryl, Especially acorn coffee! Doesn't sound too good to me!

message 84: by Mimi (last edited Mar 04, 2011 02:22PM) (new)

Mimi Smith | 199 comments As to the earlier comments about Jamie in the present-I can't see it. I don't think the values and standards of life and behavior nowadays would sit well with him.
Can you imagine Jamie walking by a girl in a miniskirt making out with her boyfriend in public?

Also-divorces, sex before marriage, the big value of material things and career. He could, I guess, find a place here, but I don't think it's the time for him.

I don't think his chivalry and honor wouldn't get him very far, unfortunately...
Or maybe I'm more than a little cynical...
You tell me.

Joyce (js33) To go back, I'd sure have to bone up on medical knowledge.

I agree, not to mention the culture shock too. All the cars, noise, factories, television... It would be MUCH harder for someone in the past to acclimate to the present day. They don't have records and historical records and knowledge to fall back on. Even with Claire telling him, it's not the same as knowing. Jamie would hate the present day.

I can't see it either, I the 20Th century would take away the "essence" of Jamie why we all love him. He lives in a time that Honor is above all other things.

message 88: by AliNicole Reads (new)

AliNicole Reads (alinicolereads) I just read the part in The Outlandish Companion where DG addresses Jamie going forward in time. Basically, she said it would be disrespectful (to Jamie) to have to write a scene about him seeing a microwave for the first time...and that he is a man of his time.

I tend to agree with her.

message 89: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I don't remember he saying that, but I couldn't agree more. I've always felt like Jamie would be lost in the present day.

message 90: by AliNicole Reads (new)

AliNicole Reads (alinicolereads) Well...I did paraphrase the quote a little, couldn't find it at the time. But the gist of it is the same I think.

pg. 331, footnote

"...some people think it would be so neat to see him be amazed at microwave ovens and video games...sorry, not on your tintype. He's a man of his time, and I have more respect for his dignity than to try to circumvent the ways of nature for the sake of a lame joke."

message 91: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Man, I love Diana. I love how much integrity she has for her characters. And even though we all love them, the are her characters. It makes me really happy to hear that.

Jamie wouldn't be the Jamie we loved if he was affected by modern times, in my opinion.

message 92: by Annie (new)

message 99: by Ledda (new)

Ledda Gh | 50 comments Interesting thread... I would have to say everything you mentioned X2. Plus a reinforced camping tent. Also a book with all the information for the time up to today for the whole world, just in case, and a map that tells me where there is gold yet to be found. Would buy the land and live like a queen. I would laser off all the hair so I don't have to think about the razor.

I wish you all farewell. I'm latina from a LONG line of Latinas and no men..so I know I would probably get smacked right away because of my big mouth ha!
Besides I wouldn't be able to take the way of living. It seems so violent. Remember when Claire when to visit Geillis and saw the boy that was staked by the ear because he stole something...can't remember ecxatly what it was. Depression would kill me no matter how much bang I get from Jamie in bed. Another thing is women get raped left and right and on top of that they are blamed for disgracing the family "HELLO!!!" I just got raped you M^&*F&*) you see? Big mouth no teeth.

Another thing is the weather, I need sun! and I need the sun to caress all of my dangerous curves ;) LOL Too much clothing, I would be in my shift all the time. And PLEASE the SMELL!!! I do not care how hot you are after a week in the woods and no bathing, you don't have a scent..you stink! not to inmagine what your breath is like eeeeeewwwwww.
My husband always runs after me when he is done working out "come on!!! he says just like Jamie and Claire. See how I support your Jamie obsession?" Doesn't work for me....

Have fun ladies. I guess you should come up with a plan to get on the big newspapers or something so we can follow you thru the history books. Or you can leave things for us under the planks of wodden floor of a church or something so we can get new from you. Or Better yet, send us letter thru the mail marked "do not deliver till..." hahahha this is funny.
