Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments TOP TEN REASONS YOU SHOULD QUIT FACEBOOK

I don't know if we've discussed this before now. I read this article just a short while ago, and it sort of brought to the forefront in my mind that I waffle on whether or not to keep my social networking profiles.

The major pro, in my opinion, is the people I get to know through the sites (you guys, for instance). I have other reasons, of course... and I'm sure I share some opinions with some of you around this very thing.

But is that enough to justify keeping one? Is it enough to quiet my concerns around having one? I don't know... I mean, I'm still here, aren't I? So for now that should be a clear indication of in which direction I'm leaning. But I'm not above deleting my profile. I've done it before now.

What are your thoughts on this?

Phil | 11837 comments Things like myspace, facebook, twitter? Waste. Of. Time.

Sites like GR are different from those others. Here we're discussing a shared interest. Those sites are just to spend time telling everyone what you ate for breakfast.

I had Honey Bunches of Oats, by the way.

BUT WHERE WILL I GET TO SEE ALL YOUR LEAH PICTURES?!!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments You can't delete FB accounts. Literally. You can simply deactivate it, but it's STILL THERE. FOREVER.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Whatever. If the writer of that article is keen on deleting his FB account, so be it. Some of us actually like keeping tabs on our friends on FB. And GR. And wherever else.

I'm sure it would be time consuming, but surely you could delete individual posts and pictures if you wanted to do so...

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments True, Heidi, you could do that.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I've walked away from my FB account a little more and I always leave my chat "off"...mostly because my browser doesn't like chat, and freezes when someone messages me, but also because I have a couple students who will say hi every single time I'm on. I like being able to search for my friends, though, and see what's up with them.

Also, I agree with Heidi, I like seeing Saller's pics...and some other pics from friends as well.

message 12: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I joined FB under the impression that I could peek at my daughters' pages, look at their latest prom photos, etc. Then I realized they must friend me for me to view their pages. I am their mom, not their friend. Mom is my job. Now if I want to see their latest photos I just ask them to show me their page and they do.

When I (briefly) had an account, numerous boys from my high school class contacted me and asked me to be their friend. This seemed ridiculous, as I did not have a clue who they were, except they supposedly graduated with me in 1978. So, I deleted the account. Whew. No more stranger stalkers.

message 13: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments It gives the word "friend" a new meaning. That's for sure.

I ran across this blog the other day and thought it was pretty funny.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Oh Julie, that IS good. Especially the line about friendship with Mr. Jim Beam!

message 17: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Maybe I'm an idiot but I don't see what the big deal is. That article sounds like someone's personal bitch-fest---someone who possibly spends waaaaay too much time on FB. I'm unclear as to what the author means by the repeated accusations of inappropriate use of personal data? I mean--what personal data? I'm married, live in Virginia, went to St. Catherine's High School and graduated in '81? I like cat? So? That's hardly top-secret information, is it? It's not like I've got my bank account and credit card info up there. And if my so-called personal data leads me to be targeted by X-Y-Z advertizers or spammers--again, so what? It is a minor--very minor--annoyance to clear all that shit out of my inbox, but it's hardly ruining my life.

message 18: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Mary wrote: "I like cat?"

How do you like them prepared?

message 19: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Oops, lol. Meant to say "cats", obviously. And I'll eat 'em however the local Chinese restaurant likes to serve 'em.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm done with the whining regarding Facebook. If you (and I mean "you" in a general fashion) are so concerned about privacy, then they should steer clear. For the people I know who are on FB, more often than more they're pretty aware of the lack of privacy limitations, and they do very well to share privacy tips and make each other aware of potential issues.

message 21: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Actually, I think I probably feel more uncomfortable about some posts here than I do on FB. I'm a bit more candid here.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Yesh. I think GR gets me to share waaaaay more than I ever would on FB.

message 23: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Just out of curiosity, who "friends" their boss on FB? I dont even "friend" friends of my boss.

message 24: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) No bosses on my friend list. Well, there's that one guy I used to work for. But he was never very boss-like.

message 25: by Shana (new)

Shana (shanac55) | 98 comments I "friended" my boss on FB. Mainly because she requested me to be her friend, and I felt like declining her would have been a bad thing.

message 26: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) It would give me a great deal of immature pleasure to decline a "friend" request from my boss, were she foolish enough to offer me the chance. What's she gonna do about it? She's not my friend.

message 27: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) No, I've had bosses that I would also consider to be friends. She's just not one of them. I don't trust her.

message 28: by Shana (new)

Shana (shanac55) | 98 comments I'm on good terms with my boss. We don't really socialize outside of work, but I think we would if the opportunity presented itself. I'm ok with her being my FB friend. I just block her from the drunk nekked pics.

message 29: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Oh never fear, Barb. You are definitely still crazy.

Félix (habitseven) Mary wrote: "Oh never fear, Barb. You are definitely still crazy."

You wouldn't be here if you weren't.

message 31: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments We're all crazy here on TC. That's what makes us so special and interesting.

Seriously, I must suck at social networking. This is the one venue I have felt comfortable in. My former favorite site was Live Journal's cooking group. Then one day I made the lame-o suggestion that if you wanted a recipe for chicken stock, perhaps you didn't need to immediately post a recipe request, but maybe you could LOOK IT UP? Like you know, in a book? Or maybe at a recipe web site? Here, let me Google that for you! Then hoo-boy, did the Cynthia-haters come out! I was a food snob, I was a book snob, I was a just plain snob, and did not deserve to live, or own a Viking range. Scared me to death, haven't been on Live Journal much since then.

message 32: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Barb wrote: "lol - wow, how dare you state the obvious! It's much faster to google, than to post a question on a forum anyway ..."

I KNOW, Barb! Oh, Brother.

message 33: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments There's a recipe for chicken stock?

message 34: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I feel you, Cynthia! I belong to another social networking site and some of the crapola posted there make my head spin! It amazes me how many people out there need constant attention and reassurance for every little aspect of their life. I mean, why Google "urinary tract infection" or go to your local Doc In The Box when you could start a whole thread whining and crying about how much it hurts when you pee and what should you DOOOOOOO?

message 35: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Oh, Phil, we need to talk. If you want chicken stock, you must make the Roasted Chicken stock from "Joy of Cooking." It will make you say bye-bye to your days of relying on stock from a can.

Yes Mary, it definitely made my head spin. I took it very personally, as well, which I now know was a waste of time and energy.

Félix (habitseven) Stephen is quite unique. But then, aren't we all?

message 50: by Heidi (last edited May 07, 2010 08:58PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Well, I'm sure you're not a robot, Larry. And just because I think Stephen is, doesn't mean I won't acknowledge him as a person (just not the one he portrays). I'll still respond to his posts as I would anyone else's posts.
