Anna Hate is such a strong word, dearie. . .

Personally, I love Harry Potter. The series was so well written and the true genius of Rowling's style is evident when one looks over the series as a whole and realizes how everything is connected and intertwined. Fabulous!

Ravenna I think its REALLY over rated but I don't hate it.

Not everyone who dislikes the series doesn't understand it.

Italia8989 Everyone has different tastes in books. I don't like some popular stuff, and I am in love with some books that I feel do not get recognized enough.
The point is, WHY exactly do you not like "Harry Potter"? It has a plot, the characters have goals, they are relate-able, there is an antagonist, a theme, morals, consistent material, etc. It is okay if you do not like it. A lot of books have these certain elements and I still do not like them.
Personally, the "Harry Potter" series are some of my favorite books of all time. Besides "not having a point," why do you not like them? It might be easier to understand if you explained further.
Feel free to reply!

message 2905: by [deleted user] (new)

Everyone has different opinions on different books, and everyone is entitled to them. It's really rude of you to call lots and lots of people that love Harry Potter (including myself) idiots. If you don't like the book, then that's ok, please elaborate why instead of saying it's pointless. If all books needed to have points to them, then half of the books out there shouldn't even exist.
Harry Potter does have a point. It teaches kids and adults alike that love conquers all.

message 2906: by Jessie (new)

Jessie I commented on this theread a while ago and sort of shouted about my love for hp... so since I've *ahem* grown up a tad bit (not a lot mind you), I felt obliged to write again.

I LOVE Harry Potter. It's one of my favorite series ever. It makes me sad when people don't like it, however- I respect your opinion. I do not hate you or think you are stupid. But I will probably argue with many of your reasons, and if you don't have any, it will not end well. If yiu call ME stupid, and not just the books, prepare for an all out battle of the books.
Hahaha I sound so serious... who likes that?? :D And to end this on a happier note: I love Neville!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christina um. I feel slighted. I do not consider myself to be an idiot.

Nightinkgale I love Harry Potter so much I wish I could go climb into a time machine and go back to the first day I started reading the series and read it all over again and experience the "magic" again. I mean after you read this book 30 times you don't get surprised anymore :(

message 2909: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 11, 2013 08:40AM) (new)

To put it simply, I didn't hate the Harry Potter series (it's some of the most well-written books in existence), but I wasn't blown away by it either. In fact, considering the heavy amount of praise it's received, I found it a little disappointing when I was finished with it. I enjoyed the first four books, but that's about as far as the series went for me before it took a downward dive.

message 2910: by Craig-Douglas (new)

Craig-Douglas The entire Potter franchise is awful. I'm 27 now, and read the first four books when they came out on account they were gift and didn't have a choice in the matter, and even as a young teen, I despised them. Then came the films, utterly terrible acting, special effects, so on so forth. (I'm also English) and must say that they are some of the worst English films I've seen in my life. What makes me despise it more is the fact that people who dislike the books (having read them) or the films (having seen them) get so much abuse, aggression and anger from these stupid Potterheads!

There are so many wonderful books out there, it shocks me that people choose to buy that money obsessed woman's books and everything else that is connected with it and buy into the whole sad fantasy!

GO READ A REAL BOOK!

message 2911: by Julz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Julz Rulz Here's the thing about Harry Potter. It's not that it's a bad storyline. In fact, the story itself is awesome. I could still read the books right now. But here's how I see it, Harry Potter was written for kids. That's why, if you look at the writing style, it is by no means "fantastic." Its good but its not crraaazy good. Now, referencing to the fact that the story is for kids, it does get darker in the aspect that it could be read by anyone, but the book series itself seems to be better in the eyes of those who read it growing up. Think about how it's a children's book:
ex.1 :As a kid, everyone wants to know theyre "special" a.k.a letter of how you are a wizard. ex.2: Every angsty teen has their Peter Pan dream of living life without those authoritative figures such as parents to quote on quote say "no." Hence, boarding school!
ex.3: Every guy/girl when young and teenager wishes they lived next to that cute guy/girl next door. Thus, dormitory meeting rooms coed!
Even then, what lost it for me with harry potter in a majority(I love this series tho)is that if even ONE of those characters had even slightly learned how to PHYSICALLY fight, they would've kicked ass as a witch or wizard. Regardless of the books, if the movies hadn't have had a good soundtrack in every "fight" scene where they wave wands at each other, they would've looked retarded. haha but if one of them had disbanded the others wand and progressively moved into close range and just stabbed them a sword or punched them in the face, *victory*. But im digressing.

Sandra Matras I love the series, but I respect people who, for whatever reason, don't like it. They have that right. But don't call me an idiot for liking it - I resent that, especially as you seem to be totally unable to state any reason why you don't like it.

Anna Idiot entering discussion:
I've enjoyed the Harry Potter series ever since I read the first book. It was magical and pulled me in. I didn't want to put any of the books down.

So in this case, I'm proud of being a Harry Potter-loving-idiot. It has a wonderful and intricate storyline, fabulous characters, and a great message of good wins over evil (even if it's not right away).

To think, all this time I thought I was reading an entertaining and exciting book which taught me good principles at the same time. It made learning fun. Whoops, looks like I was wrong. I'm an idiot, actually. My mistake.

Elentarri I don't like the HP series either. The series has plot holes big enough to drive a herd of unicorns through, and can't seem to keep on track or be consistent (character and plot details) between books. I don't much care for the writing style either and the vast number of overly obvious "borrowed" bits. The series (or should that rather be the PR campaign?) does earn brownie points for being exciting enough to get kids to read something. Hopefully those kids will advance to other books.

message 2926: by Clever (last edited Nov 12, 2013 06:29AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Clever Amaan The reasons why I did not like Harry Potter have been listed below:
1. He was very weak and skinny. I prefer the protagonist of the stories I read to be tall and muscular and able to win a battle easily. Though if I did have to read about a character who was skinny, but still awesome, I would expect that person to be somewhat like Artemis Fowl (and I recommend everyone to read this series).
2. He got easily bullied by Malfoy (This guy had a really awesome character before he completely finished himself of with that scene in which he becomes a crybaby in Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince), Malfoy's gang, Dudley, Dudley's parents: Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia and he always stayed with the boring children. I would have found a character who is tough and always ready to show anyone who dares to bully him what he can do to them if they do so (probably beat the bully up-really badly).
3. He was a crybaby as there was atleast one scene in each book in which he became really upset at something a bold person would probably ignore. His cowardly personality shows that if he was ever chosen as captain of anything, for example: a captain in a war (which is impossible unless it was luck), he would have most probably hid in the bathroom until the war was over, even if it took a million years, and come out to see that his army had:
a) won, without any need of their leader and once they would report to anyone how well the captain performed during the war, he would be given a good punishment.
b) lost, because they did not know what to do as their leader given any orders and when they would report this and why the captain did not do the duty he should have done, again, he would be given a good punishment.
4. If he wasn't bold and tough, he should have atleast been intelligent. Again, I would refer to Artemis Fowl as a good example.
Harry Potter had no heroic personalities and J.K. Rowling must have been aware that she could never in her life create a truly awesome character so from the moment in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in which he went to Ollivanders in Diagon Alley, she made sure he was chosen as its owner by that specific wand which held great value as it was equal to Lord Voldemort's and he had something valuable in his posession so that after seven adventures, the hero doesn't just lose the battle to the villain.
I think I have said enough to support my position, but for those who think Harry Potter is a great character (I can see many people above offended by the creator of this discussion's comment), I would have agreed with you until the fourth book in this series where his character slowly began to get weaker and weaker until he in some way managed to get himself (even if it was only for a short amount of time) killed in the seventh book.
I have to admit though, he is still and will always be a memorable character in the history of children's novels, and as proof I still remember each and every character even though it has been quite some time since I read the Harry Potter series, which was when I was eight and a hald years old at the beginning of 2012 and finished when I was aged nine in an estimated half a year.
Even though the character of Harry Potter is not in my list of 100 Awesome Book Characters, there is one person from that series whose in this list and also in my Top 10 Book Legends. That is...
LORD VOLDEMORT.

The nature of trolling is to post a statement that is designed to illicit a strong reaction. She did that, quite successfully. Her non-troll opinion would be to say she doesn't like the books. Her troll method is to make an extremely ignorant statement regarding the quality of the book and follow it up with an insult to any who disagree with her.

Now skim through the responses. Since her original post is 2008, she has not come back on ONCE to defend her position. She's a troll.

message 2939: by Fungai (new) - rated it 3 stars

Fungai Ngwerume Most ridiculous book i've ever had the displeasure of reading. Where to start...

Well, for starters the main protagonist is a spoilt, whiny, narcisistic rule-breaker with loads of cash, a celebrity and headmaster's pet whose only special skill after 6 yrs of wizarding school (and being constantly reminded that he was top dog in DADA classes) is uttering a simple elementary stunning spell EVERYTIME he's confronted by the baddest dark wizard of all time... Sure he can do a patronus but little else.

It was Hermione who taught him protective enchantments in book 7 and who teleported them and was the main brains behind most plans throughout the series (book 1, book 2, book 3, book 7)... With Ron, Harry tagging along and Harry getting all the credit of course! Harry is always surving due to sheer luck, other people and an endless barrage of deus ex machinas... Like fawkes in COS, or the wand connection thing in GOF.

The romances are badly written and... Ginny! WTF! Out of nowhere she's this Mary Sue who is wildly popular and awakens Harry's monster. How dumb does Rowling think we are?

The ending was horrible and too fairy-tale-y for a series that had progressively gotten darker and more complex. Albus Severus is such a cheesy name, so is little james and lily.

The bromance between Harry and Ron is icky. It would appear many times that harry had unrequitted feelings for ron and him marrying his sister is just disgusting and wrong. Suddenly HRH are all related at the end, marries into the white british pure blood Weasley family. It all seems clique-y, incestuous and racist for a book that heavily promotes inclusion. What was wrong with other families and people that Harry and Rowling ignored them to focus only on the Weasleys?

Bad, bad writing. Too many adverbs. Rowling introduces and discards characters, concepts, rules and objects in one book that are totally ignored in another... Just plot devices to be used whenever and wherever they are needed in a particular book. Thats just lazy.

Mikaela I have read the books and movies and they aren't bad at all unless you don't like that kind of stuff because if you read more realistic stuff it sounds really dumb, but if you like more fairy tales and magic its a great book... So it really just depends on what you like to read.

I'm curious, as I always am when someone dislikes Harry Potter... You sound as though you've read all seven of the books, so my question is...Why? You seem to very strongly hate the whole concept, characters and writing. I ask only because for me, if I dislike the first in a series of books, I might try the second one, but beyond book three...well I'm questioning why you would refer to it as ridiculous, lazy etc, yet clearly you've read the full series.
