Yes, I have.
Yes, I have.

A person has a right to love/hate a book for whatever reasons they wish. If hating the book offends J.K Rowling, so what. People will hate her books just like people love them. It's part of what being an author is all about. Besides, it's not like saying her book sucks means that J.K is an idiot or anything. It's just the dislike of the book, not the author, unless the author acts like an idiot themselves outside of the books. Then I could see that.
But seriously. J.K is grown, and can handle people saying crap about her work. I think the fans need to imitate her course of action.
Oh, and I have to say that I don't think the fans of HP are idiots at all. I have good friends that love the series to death. I only think a fan is an idiot if they can't handle negative opinions of the books.

A person does have a right to love/hate a book but that doesn't mean they can go around calling it stupid and that it has no point. And if they do, they can at least provide some reasons why.
I know I've just absolutely hated some books which the majority of Goodreads have loved (This Man, Never Too Far etc) but I haven't gone around calling it stupid even though I want to. It's called diplomacy.
J.K. Rowling is a mature adult and she has undoubtedly weathered some criticism. It comes with being an author. But that doesn't mean she'll someone calling her books "stupid" and saying "they have no point at all". I have friends who are author and they love their books as they've usually spent a large period of time devoted to them, and whenever they see harmful comments like those backed up with no constructive feedback, it does hurt them. But they've grown used to the criticism.
Nobody except Kayla, apparently thinks fans who love HP are complete idiots. I'm not saying that everybody who dislikes HP thinks that way. My best friend hates the series, but she doesn't insult the people who do love it.

I understand and respect what you say, but that person does have a right to call it stupid for any reason they so choose. If they want to vocalize their opinion, they're free to do so. Just because it offends you doesn't mean it's not their right to express their opinion. Just because you don't go around calling it stupid doesn't mean other people can't. You can express your hatred for a series and still be dimplomatic. It's not a direct attack on the author themselves; that person simply just doesn't like their work. I understand if they purposefully go onto a forum with the title "We love HP!" and bash it/troll the forum, then I would see how that's wrong. But this thread is titled "Does anyone else besides me hate Harry Potter?" so therefore it is obviously okay to call it stupid, or whatever the person thinks of it. If it offends you, then maybe you should leave/avoid these types of threads.
Exactly my point! I'm not saying it won't hurt, but what can you do? Tell that person who hated your book to stop hating it? People have bashed my artwork before, and yes it's hurt, to the point to which I cried. I work hard just like many other people do. But so what? If they hate your work, they hate it. Focus on the positives and let those people have their say. Sometimes feedback will not be kind or constructive, and you just have to deal with it. *shrug* It's life.
I don't believe in insulting others either for their opinions, and it goes both ways. For people who hate the book and love the book.

You may disagree with me, but I found when I was reading the books that the strongest character was Hermione. Despite Harry being well-written, Hermione's character really shines throughout the series. Harry is a bit disappointing and I wish he was a bit more in control of his fate.

Harry Potter is a huge Lord of the Rings ripoff. "
LOL.... you really amused me. I am a big fans of JRR Tolkien.
Btw... if you are so much into books, then it would have been better if you said that HP is a rip off of some other books, instead of LotR.
Or at least you can feed yourself with books similar to HP before dragging LotR. It's easy. Try Google.

I agree with the no cursing each other out part, but this thread is for people who hate HP. Yes people do think differently, however some people can't handle it when others say they hate a book, (even though this thread is specifically made for that very purpose!) thus an argument sparks because they think almost no one can hate HP. (With the exception of ones who respect other's opinions.) There's nothing wrong with disliking/hating a series either.

I bet that all the people who read Harry Potter and loved it feel really good about that post. What are you, 8? Grow up, and act decently.

Harry had been trying his entire life to control his fate, but he can't. Beside being Harry, he has always been one of Voldemort's soul, his horcrux. Harry was attached to him, until the last book, when the Voldemort in Harry was killed.
I am curious....what make you think that anyone can control their own fate? Even the awesome Hermione could not help falling for Ron and had to go through some unpleasant moments when Ron did not know her feeling. She could not help her miserable life when Ron left her and Harry due to jealousy. The mighty Dumbledore, who was behind all the scenario to 'Harry's life' could not even control his fate.

Indeed. JRR Tolkien was a very amazing writer I wonder if there are actually fantasy writers who have not read Lotr, or being affected by the series (or CS Lewis' books).

*blushes* i still have to read LotR...

It was more like, in the last book he did take more of a stand of where his fate will lead, which made his character more respectable in my opinion. However the rest of the books was more of as if he was almost being dragged around? I might be the only one who thinks this though. Yes, he was part of Voldemort, in a way, and he really can't control that.
I'm trying to think of a good example of what I mean, and my mind is coming up blank. That makes me sound a bit silly in this argument.

I think Harry had been able to grow up decently, considering that he was not brought up properly, nor with love. His uncle considered him weird, his aunt hated him and his cousin looked down at him (before Harry saved him). He even lived under the stairs.
When he moved to Hogwarts, he was happier, but he still had Draco and the gang 'tortured' him and Snape hated his gut (before we knew the fact).
I think Harry is a very strong person. Being Voldemort's horcrux all his life and was still able to be a good kid was not something easy to accomplish.

That being said, I grew up with Harry Potter. I think I was in first or second grade when my older started to read Sorcerer's Stone to me. After a while, she had stopped and a few months later I picked it back up and finished it myself. I continued to read the series as I grew up and the books grew with me. Harry Potter was my gateway series that got me to read so many more fantasy novels and fall in love with the genre.
I thought the characters were pretty well written. For instance, Neville, who was the typical awkward character, ended up becoming a savior. Snape, who we were lead to believe was just truly evil, we learned had once loved and actually did many things out of love.
"Big chunks of plot repeated from book to book". Yes. That's what made it a series. There was one main conflict tying them all together. Each book had its own smaller conflicts too. I'll admit that the Quidditch scenes weren't always necessary. Quidditch was one of the biggest things that tied Harry to his father. In the first book, it mainly added to the fun. In the second book, it reintroduced Dobby. In the third, you learn a little about Cedric Diggory's character before he becomes more important in the 4th book. The Quidditch World Cup in the 4th was pretty eventful, as I recall....
I do think that people put JK Rowling on a pedestal. I think she's a wonderful woman and a great writer but I don't think she's worthy of a queen status. Yes, she was responsible for teaching millions of kids to love reading in their childhood and continue through to adolescence. That's commendable.
Everyone has their own opinion. I understand if you don't like it for certain reasons. However, you can't critique the whole series after 50 pages and you have no place to call the fans idiots.
I read Twilight and I wasn't a big fan of it. I rolled my eyes every time I read another lengthy physical description of Edward. I enjoyed the events in the second half of the book but the characters were just too shallow for me. It wasn't until this year, when my Vampires in Film and Television professor and I had a conversation about it after class. He explained how the book is basically one giant metaphor for Mormonism and the perfect Mormon family. I respected it a little more after that, it at least had a purpose beyond "teenage paranormal romance". I still didn't like the book. I find the movies humorous because I can't take them seriously. However, I know people who actually did enjoy the books. I think the only "idiots" who read the series are ones who still cannot use proper spelling nor grammar and are at least 12 years old. I pity people who "hate reading" and only read those books and never looked for anything else. Book series should make you want to read more.

I have to agree. I can certainly relate to many aspects of Harry Potter and the other characters which make the simple read really very meaningful.

Well, all except #3."
Most authors could only hope to have trash that does so incredibly well the world over. This comment is for lack of better words "laughable". I stopped reading the thread at this point, because (a) haven't stopped laughing yet and (b)it was said solely for the reaction it seems to have garnered. The books are well loved in our home, as are the movies, and the memory of the smile on my daughter's face the first time Harry flew off after Malfoy on the screen, leaves me knowing I don't have to validate my love of these books. :)

I'm glad you think I'm so funny. Here are just a few of the similarities between HP and LotR:
1. Everyone avoids saying Voldemort's name, just as it was with Sauron's.
2. Dumbledore = Gandalf.
3. Wormtail? Really? This one is so painfully obvious that I don't see why I should have to explain it to you.
4. Harry is like Frodo. Everyone expects him to fulfill his destiny, but in the end, it's his choice.
5. The locket reminds me of the One Ring (they have much the same effect on whoever possesses them).

Thank you for posting a reply. I didn't really think you were all that funny, that said, these points have some value. I never really considered the similarities between Potter and Lord Of the Rings. This makes me want to pull out my Potter books and re-read to look for others. Thanks Brooke, you've actually managed to make me want to read Potter again with a new perspective. Sighs, not sure I want to tackle Lord Of the Rings right now though. :)

4 years ago I was one of those who hate HP. I even hated the people who liked it. but then i thought why do I hate it, why don't i try reading it. then i started, after finishing the first book which i forced my self to read it completely I didn't have a single reason to hate it. i couldn't wait to read the rest of the story...
just try it....

Also if you think Tolkien and Rowling are the only people to use the "old wise wizard" character archetype, or even the "orphaned child" archetype then you are sadly mistaken.
And the mythology in the books are similar because they are classic myths, neither of them made them up themselves.

I've read the series before, and actually liked the first few books. The third was my favorite. (I was in elementary when that happened). I then stopped in the middle of Order of the Phoenix because it became boring to me. I realized that I didn't like the writing, and honestly, I just fell out of it. It didn't appeal to me like it did as a child anymore. *shrug*

yeah it's just you"
There are other people who feel like I do. Like the creator of this thread. Why can't some fans of HP just accept that not everybody likes it?

Some people already read it and resent it. Me, i read it. It was okay. An average book sitting on myself. But after reading a couple other series that I enjoyed, HP just became lower in my like shelves.

Where did I call anyone an idiot? I respect you if you like it, but no where did I call anyone an idiot for liking it. I don't agree with calling others names, but still. The fans could respect the fact that more than one person dislikes the series.

You're right, and I apologize for getting so defensive. I agree that it does not give you the right to call anyone stupid. I believe the creator of the thread was wrong about that.

jajajajaajajajajaja

Wow! It´s surprising to know that people hate Harry Potter...I´ve grown reading and watching the movies and I´ve had an amazing childhood. It didn´t make me feel depressed the first time I read one of the books and after 10 years(now I´m 17) of been a fan it still makes me feel happy when I remember how much these books changed my life. I wouldn´t imagine how it would have been without them. So...Am I an idiot for that reason? I´been also a honor student at school and I´ve read authors like Tolkien and Lewis, too. It´s offensive when people that have only read a LITTLE or NOTHING from the books criticizes them. I know how it feels when you let people know what you think about books you don´t like. I do the same with Twilight books but..´.I´VE READ ALL OF THEM! I have good arguments about my dislike of this books because I´ve analyze them! I don´t just say:"The book make me feel depressed..." So the next time you give your point of view about something try to think well what you will say...

Amen!

I firmly believe that if these books were written in the style of another author, I'd never be reading anything else, but that is just not how the world works.
I love Harry potter! A lot of people do! But there are people that don't understand Harry Potter and thats okay. I have friends that hate thought of reading books like Harry Potter they don't want to be nerds. Because we all have one time or another have went all potterhead on someone. Harry Potter fans like myself can go a little over board defending Harry. You sound just as stupid as the people who say they hate it because its nerdy. Some people don't like Harry Potter! thats OKAY!!
