Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
discussion
Does anyone else besides me hate Harry Potter?
I've just come to this discussion and am quite stunned by the outrage and name calling present. I'll admit that the opening statement leaves a little to be desired in terms of worthwhile content, but really? Also, the one thing I do find frustrating is the constant need some seem to have to use someone's age in a demeaning way, as if being 10 is a bad thing. Assuming that some of the comments here are simple because of the posters' age is a very dangerous assumption in my experience, and display a general lack of respect for young people.
Finally, I love the Harry Potter books, but quite honestly find the character himself more than a little annoying. But that may be just me.
Cheers

PREACH!
PREACH!
The point, Kimiko, is that I have been insulted.Plus, I have every right to post here. Kayla asked a question, I merely answered. Her question may have seemed rude, but I answered.
Offensive! I am Not an idiot! I suppose if you like the book or not just depends on what you like to read. But yes most people like Harry potter, it's kinda hard not to.
SO i guess I'm an idiot as well because i have read the series and i liked it. yes everyone has a different opinion but Kayla you shouldn't call people idiots for liking or reading certain books.. just saying IDIOTS UNITE!!! aha

Can everyone stop assuming everyone who doesn't like Harry Potter to be a kid? I'm under 13, I LOVE Harry Potter and have since the age of seven, and I feel very insulted with all your 'you must be a kid' comments!

it makes no sense the person was saying that everyone that does not like harry potty has to be kids ...what?! first of all this is a kids series so it kind of makes sense if they like or hate it second your say that all adults like these books ... that's a ridiculous assumption because i really loved these books when i was a kid but know that i'm older i don't really like them anymore .

So mature....... I'm pretty sure your the only one. What are you,3? No one but you hates Harry Potter. End of discussion.

JK Rowling is inspiring children to read, how is that compared to playing video games and eating junk food? I don't get the comparison. If you don't like the books, fine. But there is nothing morally corrupt about them, they are simply a story meant to entertain children and adults.
Kayla wrote: "The stupid book has no point at all! Only complete idiots would read Harry Potter!"Wow. That's a mature comment...NOT. Your personal opinion is only worth the time and effort you go into sharing it with others! I can only respect someone's opinion after they give me some specific reasons. You're calling a lot of people idiots... don't insult those who enjoy it. Everyone enjoys different reading different stories and different writing styles. and one thing I've learned the hard way is to keep an open mind... if you can't say something nice (about people), don't say it at all. Seriously, why call people idiots, even if it's true? If they really are idiots, it won't impact them at all, will it? And what does that have to do with Harry Potter? In addition, it's fantasy - just have fun with it. Don't call people "idiots" because of an opinion. You must be interested somewhat if you're making comments on the novels, yes?

Hate implies some very strong feelings that I doubt you feel for an entire series that you stopped reading after the first book because it was boring. Or do you just hate the huge global phenomenon and fandom surrounding it?
Ginny wrote: "I just finished entering my review and will repost it below. I think it says it all for me. It was hard for me to insist on keeping an open mind when everyone at church (and even my husband) want..."I do not believe you are truly a teacher. If you are, I really pity your students, and not just because you don't have Harry Potter in your classroom. My parents are both teachers, and they know that the best thing that a kid can do is read, whether you personally like the book they are reading or not. And as an educated person (not to mention an educator), do you really think that reading the first chapter of a book and deciding that it has no merit whatsoever is an appropriate form of evaluation? Some of the books you mentioned as alternatives are great, but comparing Harry Potter to Ella Enchanted is a bit silly. Harry Potter is at quite a bit higher reading level. Besides, since when do books for children have to be written with a child's vocabulary? Madeleine L'Engle's children's books are some of the best I have ever come across, and they contain vocabulary that many adults don't understand. I wonder what exactly you found to dislike about Harry Potter from the first 50 or so pages? That he was an orphan? That his adoptive family was negligent? Those are both sad things of course, but they both serve to give the story its background further on in the books. And the last thing I would ever think about Harry Potter is "depressing." It's probably the single most uplifting series that I've ever read. Difference of opinion is fine, but I'm honestly unsure if we read the same book. Or maybe the only reason that you read (a bit of) the book was to reinforce the dark-age opinions you heard at whatever repressive church you attend?
I'm not really a big fan of Harry Potter. I read it and it was okay I guess. I don't hate hate it, just a mild disinterest in it. I prefer stories with more YA romance, vampyres, witches, werewolves ya know (; Anyways, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" so other people might have different objections.

I used to read the book as a kid, and it was okay. It wasn't my favorite, and plus I was forbidden to read it anyway. The writing bored me, and honestly the plot did too, so I stopped reading the books after Order of the Phoenix. It wasn't my cup of tea, if you will. LOL some people act like you just can't not like Harry Potter. Chill out man. If someone doesn't like Harry Potter because they think he's a lame character or something, they have every right to. Some fans get batshit crazy when someone says they don't like HP, and honestly, that factor also is what drove me away from this series.

I am not about to read the whole thread but on the spur of the moment I say this is probably trolling. Or maybe not, not everyone likes the books, although that makes no sense.
I like Harry Potter. J.K Rowling has writen a very succesful book, that practically no one has the imagination to think up. HP is the first succesful children's fantasy book, then came, Twilight, Percy Jackson, Hunger Games, etc. You can not call someone an idiot for liking him. Maybe Harry Potter isn't your favorite, but that doesn't mean that everyone who does like him is an idiot.
Harry Potter is the main character, if you like the book i don't see how you can not like harry potter he saves the day , hes famous. He never really does anything on purpose and the books would not be the same without him .
You are obviously a naive child. You are one of the 0.000000001% of people who hate Harry Potter, and I pity you for being unable to find joy in it, Harry Potter is incredible, AVADA KEDAVRA.
HP is an overrated piece of trash.

The purpose of a good book is: to entertain and satisfy its readers. I'm sorry Kayla, if the Harry Potter series did not do that for you, but honestly, just because you don't like the books doesn't mean you should insult them so carelessly. Every author loves their books, even if you think it is "bad" and sometimes, they can actually feel a little hurt. J.K. Rowling is a real person and if she ever heard you insulting her book without providing any valid points or constructive feedback, it can hurt her.
But honestly, I should say, people who knew what they were getting themselves into (a world of magic, Muggles and friendship), which they probably did since Harry Potter is a household name, shouldn't blame the books. They most likely do know what the context of Harry Potter is, and if knowingly, Kayla, you read the books even if you knew you wouldn't like it, I can't exactly sympathise.
By the way, I'm actually deeply offended that you will refer to the millions of people out there who simply adore Harry Potter as complete idiots. We're NOT complete idiots.
We love fantasy. We love well-written books. We love reading about friendship. We love reading about magic. We love all that and it's a matter of preference.
So just because you didn't like Harry Potter doesn't necessarily mean that everybody else agrees with you. There is a reason why there have been more than a billion copies sold of Harry Potter. It's because WE LOVED!! Harry Potter.

LOL.... pretty interesting. I thought when someone dislikes books, they will point out things they found unsatisfying about the books.
I suppose I considered every reader on Goodreads is capable of doing so, and is smart enough to discuss books properly.

It's the BEST series ever. It has twists and turns, riddles, brain teasers, romance, action, friendship, evil, humor and its own fantasy world! It's mainly about everything! If you say you hate it, that's fine! But say it only when you ACTUALLY tried reading the book! J.K Rowling is a great writer. She doesn't deserve hate.
