Does anyone else besides me hate Harry Potter?
hehe, I love how on every thread about HP you go on Micaela, eventually someone says:omg is that tom felton in your pic?!

OP is shorthand for original poster.

I know it so funny and also the other Mikaela has been commenting on may discussons that I have commented in so it weird how she doesnt notice until now.
I am sorry. It must be the wrackspurts filling my brain. Did you Siriusly just say that you DON'T LIKE HARRY POTTER?I am too shocked for words, that someone actually dislikes my childhood hero.....
Jeanelle wrote: "Your just jealous that Harry Potter is so famous. Is it because your a Twilight fan? Oh and by the way, don't go insulting millions of people just because they love the best book in the world."a- HP is not the best book in the world...
b- Liking Twilight doesn't mean hating HP or vice versa
Caro wrote: "Jeanelle wrote: "Your just jealous that Harry Potter is so famous. Is it because your a Twilight fan? There is no one best book of the world imo, only candidates.
Harry Potter is a candidate among countless others (imo twilight isnt, but that's just me being subjective).
Caro wrote: "Jeanelle wrote: "Your just jealous that Harry Potter is so famous. Is it because your a Twilight fan? Oh and by the way, don't go insulting millions of people just because they love the best book i..."a-I was exaggerating.
b- Twilight and Harry Potter are just two books where people take a side. Twilight and HP are famous books battling each other.
Don't take my opinion too seriously.
This discussion should be deleted because its just creating a stronger rivalry between HP and twilight. ( I'm only using twilight as an example because there are quite few comments about it in this discussion.)
Jeanelle wrote: "b- Twilight and Harry Potter are just two books where people take a side. Twilight and HP are famous books battling each other."People can like either one, both or neither.
Not everyone in both fandoms take that rivalry thing seriously.
Maureen, I like Harry Potter, lets get that out of the way first. Its not the best written, or most original work in the world, but its also not bad, and it has reread value. However, being a bestseller doesn't mean that a book is good, it means that it had a good advertising campaign, that it has had a lot of merchandising, and that it has been pushed by the publishing company as "the book to have". Same as with music. The music that is in the top 10 of the charts is very rarely good music, as its what gets the most publicity not what has the most intrinsic worth. Publishing houses are as guilty of this sort of publicity as record companies. Some of the best books out there are the unnoticed ones, that you may pick up on a whim, and discover the best author you've ever read, but because they aren't the right person, or they don't fall into the right category, then they're just no advertised. How many of you have heard of King Rat, absolutely amazing book, that I picked up randomly, now I own everything he's written to date, and now the author is quietly winning awards for his writing, and barely gets any publicity. A Game of Throneswas only really known to dedicated fantasy fans, I first read it 6 years ago, and it was published in 1996, thats 16 years ago. No-one else really noticed it, and its sequels until a TV series (and a damned good series at that) was made of it. Now its a bestseller, not because its good (which it is, its a brilliant piece of fantasy literature) but because it got massive amounts of publicity.
Twilight is a bestseller (and no, I'm not a hater of twilight, just disappointed that its so trite, yet doing so well) and that book has almost no intrinsic worth whatsover, its a mormans bizarre wet dream published and marketed to teenage girls.
Large sale revenue is not indicative of a good product.
However, if harry potter is getting people reading, and getting them to decide that other books are worth reading too, I can't understand why anyone would hate it. Same as with Twilight, as a piece of literature its trite rubbish, but as a springboard into the world of literature, it has a small amount of value. It might not be for you, but someone reading something, anything at all, is better than them not reading.

very nice insight, I have to agree with most of it. It's sad that so many brilliant authors are never recognized by the public .
Kitti wrote: "I am sorry. It must be the wrackspurts filling my brain. Did you Siriusly just say that you DON'T LIKE HARRY POTTER?I am too shocked for words, that someone actually dislikes my childhood hero....."
Gettit, SIRIUSly? Hehe. You're a genius.
I actually have to correct myself, after a bit of checking. Game of Thrones was a bestseller before the release of the series. However, I also checked into what it takes to be a bestseller (yes, I'm that anal and that sad), and of course, like music, its done in weekly charts, what it takes to be a bestseller varies on time of year. The Times bestseller list is composed every week, and in, say, January, a book only need sell 4000 copies in the US to be in the New York Times bestseller list, and in September, that number may go up to 10,000.
In the United Kingdom, a hardcover book could be considered a "bestseller" with sales ranging from 4,000 to 25,000 copies per week, so an average of about 14,500, and in Canada, the rule of thumb is 5,000 copies sold.
When you consider population sizes of these countries, thats nothing. Its a tiny number of people buying these books. Its astonishing that 5000 (taking the canadian example) is enough to get you on a bestseller list. I mean, even when you take it over a 52 week period (260,000 sold), and consider canadas population of 34,740,000, thats 3/4 of a percent of the population. 0.75 percent. Nothing, basically.
Sp, being a bestseller means you've touched barely anyone with your literature.
In the interest of fairness, of course, 450 million copies of the harry potter series have sold worldwide, meaning that it is the best selling book series in history. And back to being rational, not everyone who bought the books will have enjoyed them. Again, this brings me back to "yay for literature", as its no doubt getting people reading, who wouldn't otherwise have bothered.
on a side note, I may have to move to canada, they have half the population number of the UK, and about 100 times more space
WOAH!!! How can you hate Harry Potter!!!???? It is a great book series (: Plus the movies are good too!!! If you hate Harry Potter, your crazy.....
Wait, there are 9, count that, 9 exclamation marks in that sentence, and 4 erotemes, 5 full stops too. This means you have nearly as much punctuation as you have words, and you have the gall to accuse other people of being crazy? ;P
Hazel wrote: "Wait, there are 9, count that, 9 exclamation marks in that sentence, and 4 erotemes, 5 full stops too. This means you have nearly as much punctuation as you have words, and you have the gall to acc..."And yet it is still better constructed than some of Rowling's sentences...
stop hating on other people's opinions!!! i love harry potter but im friends with people who don't like it. goodreads is for finding good books and discussing books we love. NOT for insulting millons of people and starting a stupid disscusion.
really? We're not allowed to take the mickey out of a book? Really? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkR...
thats what people sound like when they get all "offended" about people having a bit of fun at the expense of, get this, a book.
Jesus, Mary and Allah, I like the books, but I can still criticise and mock them, as all books are open to such.
Kayley wrote: "stop hating on other people's opinions!!! "Kayley, did you just hate on my opinion that some of Rowling's sentences are not well constructed?
I can agree that her sentences aren't as fluidly constructed as some authors', but I can say that as the books progress she learns from those mistakes in the first few. Sadly I do see authors keep to that disjointed like structure. I do get annoyed when a sentence is shorter than 5 or 6 words. Yes, I do that with my writing (guilty as charge) but it's used to build a sort of suspense throughout the story, and isn't used as often. But I can see where Shaun gets that point.
i can say that i am not a fan of harry potter, but insulting millions of people around the world is just like....
I know plenty of incredibly smart people (and I'm talking about some very rich and successful people in the film and entertainment business), and they all agree that Harry Potter is an amazing series- a classic.I understand that some people aren't into the fantasy of witches and wizards, but the storytelling is magnificent, and you should at least be able to recognize that.
To go as far as to call people idiots who love this book- beware. It just makes YOU sound like an idiot.
Isabella wrote: "I know plenty of incredibly smart people "That's an appeal to authority and really, lends nothing to your argument.

These are the people that brought us the Chipmunks sequel and other Hollywood productions of similar quality... I'm not sure that I trust their judgement of quality, except in the case of quality being the quality of selling lots of movies...
Ugh the Chipmunks. :/ Worst idea for a movie ever. Sadly in this day and age quantity is over quality.
People, surely seven years of Hogwarts education has taught us to never feed a troll! For shame!
Jeanelle wrote: "Your just jealous that Harry Potter is so famous. Is it because your a Twilight fan? Oh and by the way, don't go insulting millions of people just because they love the best book in the world."**you're
But good point. I'm a grammar nazi, don't take it personally. I love Harry Potter.
BTW I don't really care! I just wanted to say forgive all of us "idiots"!!! You may be pointing your finger at us, but really you are pointing at yourself and calling yourself an idiot!
You guys it's fine to have ur opinions but u don't have to go calling everybody idiots. some of us really love Harry Potter, so you don't have to go hatin!
Kayla, you obviously have no sense when it comes to books! Harry Potter is one of the best series of books in the history of mankind. You should know that. Take it from a muggle.
Jordan wrote: "People, surely seven years of Hogwarts education has taught us to never feed a troll! For shame!"Ah yes, isn't the correct protocol to shove a long piece of wood up its nose and into the brainpan? I'm sure thats what I recall as being the way to deal with trolls...
Only a true Gryffindor would have the courage to admit they hate Harry Potter to millions of fans. You would have done well...
Jordan wrote: "Only a true Gryffindor would have the courage to admit they hate Harry Potter to millions of fans. You would have done well..."Either that or someone has been imperioused....I have the perfect solution, AVADA MUTHER FRIKKIN KEDAVRA. Solved XD. The OP is probably a muggle, Molly Weasley always taught me don't feed trolls...
Harry Potter is the best series EVER and you are the idiot if you don't like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's amazing and J.K. Rowling is the most amazing and creative author that there ever was!!!!!!!!!
Kayla wrote: "The stupid book has no point at all! Only complete idiots would read Harry Potter!"You seem to be very immature if you find this book has no point to it. Obviously it must have some if it has the ability to unite readers all around the world to see the importance and power of love over everything else. If those are the idiots of the world, then what you are must be much lower than that. I would think twice before you say that. It's ok if you don't like it, but don't be so quick to judge. Apparently you didn't read the book that closely, or you would have learned that.
Considering that I saw the movies and they got almost everything right I don't think I should read them.
You saw the movies without reading the books?! Craziness!!! You MUST read the books, even if you've already seen the movies!!!!!!!
Well considering that I was in 4th grade just 3 years ago and I didn't like reding back then...but now I love to read but it seems like the movies and the books are the same.
They're not really the same... I still think that everyone should read them!!! You don't HAVE to, but I think that you should!!!!!!!!
