Leah I don't hate it, I just lost interest in it part way through the 4th book. Just not what I'm interested in, and I don't see why all of you people need to hate on people just because they don't like it. Big deal, not everyone has the same interests. Just saying you don't like the story line doesn't imply the writing is bad or anything, so I don't see why you're so offended over a book series.

That's essentially a microcosm or metaphor, however you view it, for people in general. Most people loathe change, so you could argue that their reaction to that is poking fun at people who are obsessed with keeping things the same.

Nat Happy bundle of sticks....that just made me giggle for some reason. Also a fag is a type of Oboe too...so really the words used for human are incorrect...so I don't even see why we use those words to define a human anyways.
Okay...and she rated it 5 stars and still said that about the book...major oxymoron right there.

When did I ever ask you or anyone else to apologize for your opinion? You can hate a book. Sure. It can even be for stupid reasons, that's the whole purpose of an opinion. We'd rather you apologize for being a judgmental homophobic idiot. And I still find it funny that you say I have no life, when we're on the same site, having the same discussion, doing the exact same thing with our free time. By that, we both have no lives.

Grow up please...yes an opinion is your's personally, but an opinion using words like that isn't respected, especially not how I was raised it wasn't. It's rude, and inconsiderate to use degrading words such as fag to state an opinion when there are better words to describe it. I'm sorry, and saying that someone has no life is kind of rude in itself. I'm pretty sure James has as much of a life as anyone else on here does.

Nat Ahh Celeste was just a rude troll. Reminds me of customers I have at work...rude and inconsiderate of other people's feelings.

message 2439: by Emily (new) - rated it 4 stars

Emily Cook I'm seeing a lot of hateful words on both sides of this argument, but I don't think that people who "hate" Harry Potter don't hate the writing style, or the author, or the "good-vs-evil" theme, or whatever else most people are using to defend the books.

I think they hate the idea of "witchcraft" and "wizardry" because the Bible- and morality as a whole- tells us to stay away from such things. Most of these people are usually devoutly religious in one form or another, and they believe that any contact with that type of thing is fundamentally wrong. Many of my friends' have banned the HP books, because they claim that it puts a "good front" on evil practices. I myself am religious, and I would never dabble in such things.

That being said, I love Harry Potter! I agree with everyone that's been politely defending the beautiful writing and strong underlying values of Harry Potter. It teaches patience, loyalty, confidence, and the power of strong friendships. It warns about being overly ambitious, carrying things to far, and how hate and love are both dangerous.

I think the way to go about this issue is the way my parents did: wait until your children are old enough (AND mature enough) to take in ideas and refute them. My parents thought that we should wait until we were teens, so we did. This way, we could take in all the values and principles that HP embodies, and enjoy a wonderful, well-written book series, but we could still realize that witchcraft is not a good thing, and that Harry's world is entirely make-believe.

People who dislike HP talk about how it's leading to a rise in kids joining cults, but if your child isn't old enough to distinguish between things that are made up and things that are real, things that are fun in books but not in reality, he or she shouldn't be reading Harry Potter! I love HP and will be a fan forever, but there is no way I am ever going to join a cult or becoming a witch.

Just because you read Harry Potter or allow your children to do so, doesn't mean you aren't religious/moral or that you endorse sorcery, it just means you are, and allow your children to be, open-minded.

That's all I have to say.

I'm wondering if your parents followed the same wise advice when it came to your religion? I'm guessing not.

Currer Jean Everyone's done it, heard of a book and disliked it without really reading it. That's fine, but if you're going to go on a website where everyone is an avid reader and has probably read the book you're talking about that's not very smart. Especially when most of the people on the site are "idiot" Harry Potter fans. A lot more people are HP fans than not. Just talk to the like 2 billion people who crashed Pottermore and hold conventions and broke movie records by seeing DH Prt.2. The facts are there, hon. Potter fans might be "idiots" in your opinion, but we are the majority.

message 2445: by Nicole (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nicole Bellmay Harry Potter is amazing and anyone who says otherwise must not have even attempted to read the infamous works of J. K. Rowling. I admit, I used to be a Twilight fan, but it was never better than Harry Potter. Harry Potter is, and always will be, the best book/film series in the universe. Have you met every single Harry Potter fan? Do you even know how smart I, like so many other are who are Harry Potter fans? You have no right to say that "only idiots read Harry Potter" because we are not idiots.

message 2449: by Nat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nat Honestly if people would actually be smart...fag is a type of instrument, bundle of sticks and a cigar. So honestly us humans are dumb enough to even use that word as a degraded one to groups of people or an insult. The word itself is not suppose to be used an insult. Every time I hear someone say fag I facepalm...it's a damn instrument that looks like an oboe.
And if more people knew and followed about the "life's not about winning" aspect we wouldn't have such an interesting world.
