Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
discussion
Does anyone else besides me hate Harry Potter?

Same, my parents never gave a crap what I read, they were just really happy that I liked to read (though, my hobby of reading has burnt a bit of hole in their pockets). Their philosophy was that if I wanted to read it, then I was obviously ready to read it.

Ummm Harry Potter is a pretty real character. Sure he uses magic and flies on a broom but the fact that he goes through stages of life similar to ours makes him more realistic. See you didn't read all 7 books so therefore you can't judge from when he's 11 as an unreal character. When you're 11 you don't have those deeper set emotions nor are you complex in thought. That comes later on in the series as he grows up. And I love all of the characters...especially Snape. And sickening is something I'd use for other characters, not HP. And JK Rowling is a better writer than PJ's author...JK uses fancy words b/c she knows how to utilize them in a well structured sentence.

I don't see how you can have trouble loving at least one character. Perhaps if you'd read all seven you would find one. The solutions are believable giving the idea that they can use magic.... as I said before.
Unfortunately, Percy Jackson was written for elementary school kids, and as much I am addicted to the series, the writing is pretty horrible. His vocabulary is small, and he has numerous awkward, unsophisticated sentences. Percy Jackson is written for younger kids, which I respect, but cannot, on any terms, be called well written literature.

Fancy words? What fancy words?

That's sad that you're not allowed to.

I've heard this from a few people now, two of my good friends aren't, it saddens me. But I respect that.

I'm not an english major, but I couldn't put it any better myself.

When she wrote the first book, she had a daughter and she was broke. She wrote the idea on a napkin at a cafe. Nobody knew how far the book would get, so she was forced to write the first book as if it was going to be a one book thing. I'm sorry that you will never get to enjoy the next six books. I don't see how it would be dragging yourself through.. but i guess it's a matter of opinion.

I don't respect that at all. Nazi Germany, cults, N. Korea, and many other restrictive societies (islam, catholic church) all ban books and therefore free thought.

Ah the joys of free speech on a public forum, you can say your peice McKenzie but you can't expect me to subscribe your position You must recognise that my opinion differs to yours and I'll discuss it if I like. I can have a discussion with any willing partner on any topic relating to HP and this if you don't mind relates to HP especially as many people have stated they are not permitted to read it I can and will challenge this. If you don't like it the polite thing to do is to ignore it not yell but then I'm an advocate of free speech and thought so you can can go ahead and say what you like and perhaps I'll use my manners.

(sorry i flipped out(ive just been reading this chat from its start and it was driving me INSANE ))

and you would know this because you didn't read it?

True, true.

What? Why?

I still don't see it, but okay. I'm done arguing about something so menial. I'm off to write my own book, so see ya. :)

Perhaps for your mental health you might take a break from this thread ;-)

Lacking meaning?!?!
I'm sorry but I beg to differ.
This books series has more meaning than many of the other books I've read. You should really read all seven before you go hating on the whole series in front of a bunch of Harry Potter fans.
Unfortunately, from what I've read from you, you seem to put yourself above Harry Potter, like it wasn't worth your time, try it again.

What Harry Potter had wad good characters. That is the crux of any great read. As for there being a point, past the moralistic messages, it is pure escape into a world where people have super-natural powers. This resonates with people living in a world where people feel that they have no control. Sorry you missed it, but hey, I don't get the vampire thing.

*claps* BRAVO!

Yeah! I will follow others' lead.... *claps* Bravo! Bravo! Encore! Encore!

Couldn't have said it better myself.
