Will IV That's okay if you are saying that in jest, but to put that forth as a serious statement is just ridiculous and laughable.

Same, my parents never gave a crap what I read, they were just really happy that I liked to read (though, my hobby of reading has burnt a bit of hole in their pockets). Their philosophy was that if I wanted to read it, then I was obviously ready to read it.

Ricco I love the series!!! It wasn't until I read Harry potter that I was much of a reader, but ever since I've been reading books like eating candy on Halloween night.

Ummm Harry Potter is a pretty real character. Sure he uses magic and flies on a broom but the fact that he goes through stages of life similar to ours makes him more realistic. See you didn't read all 7 books so therefore you can't judge from when he's 11 as an unreal character. When you're 11 you don't have those deeper set emotions nor are you complex in thought. That comes later on in the series as he grows up. And I love all of the characters...especially Snape. And sickening is something I'd use for other characters, not HP. And JK Rowling is a better writer than PJ's author...JK uses fancy words b/c she knows how to utilize them in a well structured sentence.

I don't see how you can have trouble loving at least one character. Perhaps if you'd read all seven you would find one. The solutions are believable giving the idea that they can use magic.... as I said before.

Unfortunately, Percy Jackson was written for elementary school kids, and as much I am addicted to the series, the writing is pretty horrible. His vocabulary is small, and he has numerous awkward, unsophisticated sentences. Percy Jackson is written for younger kids, which I respect, but cannot, on any terms, be called well written literature.

Fancy words? What fancy words?

message 2014: by Nat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nat Fancy words meaning a word that is 6-9 words long in some people's ideas...or maybe it's the spells. But those are all in Latin text, so that's not really fancy, that's just the author knowing how to pick up a few books and web sites and studying before she whips stuff out on the fly. I don't know.

Nat See I don't see what you're getting at. JK Rowling uses literary devices that equate to a good story. The way you're saying it is just kind of....I don't know. I see what you're getting at, but when I read the books at age 11 I didn't have any issue with the vocabulary or the descriptive words. Nothing contradicted with me.

When she wrote the first book, she had a daughter and she was broke. She wrote the idea on a napkin at a cafe. Nobody knew how far the book would get, so she was forced to write the first book as if it was going to be a one book thing. I'm sorry that you will never get to enjoy the next six books. I don't see how it would be dragging yourself through.. but i guess it's a matter of opinion.

I don't respect that at all. Nazi Germany, cults, N. Korea, and many other restrictive societies (islam, catholic church) all ban books and therefore free thought.

I can have a discussion with any willing partner on any topic relating to HP and this if you don't mind relates to HP especially as many people have stated they are not permitted to read it I can and will challenge this. If you don't like it the polite thing to do is to ignore it not yell but then I'm an advocate of free speech and thought so you can can go ahead and say what you like and perhaps I'll use my manners.

message 2031: by Nat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nat I'm okay on opinions...it's just odd that the way this book was described as having sickening characters, a poor plot, and bad writing just made me question why. I guess it's probably b/c I've read HP since I was 11, and I had no problem with the vocabulary or anything, since it was pretty basic to me. I've read tons more books with more challenging vocab..kind of like the one I'm reading now.

Lacking meaning?!?!
I'm sorry but I beg to differ.
This books series has more meaning than many of the other books I've read. You should really read all seven before you go hating on the whole series in front of a bunch of Harry Potter fans.
Unfortunately, from what I've read from you, you seem to put yourself above Harry Potter, like it wasn't worth your time, try it again.

message 2039: by Brian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Brian Betke I wouldn't call anyone who reads an idiot. I applaud any reader, no matter what the topic or genre. If this is what gets kids to read, hurray. For me it was, "No One Here Gets Out Alive."
What Harry Potter had wad good characters. That is the crux of any great read. As for there being a point, past the moralistic messages, it is pure escape into a world where people have super-natural powers. This resonates with people living in a world where people feel that they have no control. Sorry you missed it, but hey, I don't get the vampire thing.

message 2040: by Julia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Julia vampire thing?

message 2041: by Nat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nat Vampire thing meaning Twilight right? Cause I don't get it either. Wizards fighting against a villain trying to create a perfect race of wizards (sounds like Hitler to me) and almost creating a WW3 is more interesting than sparkling vampires frolicking in the woods.

A Foxtrotter Reads I applaud all those who stated it isn't so much what you read, so long as you read. I would NEVER tell someone that their choice of reading material was stupid. Nat My ex told me that reading was stupid and for geeks. Partially a reason I broke up with him...yes did so over books. Nobody tells me books are stupid EVER unless you want something missing. See I don't tell people that their reading material is stupid, I just like to discuss.
