I don't make discussions about things I hate. Personally, I dislike Twilight. Do I go around bashing the series or saying I dislike it? No.

tl;dr haters gonna hate, rock on potter lovers

Well said.

Haters have nothing better to do. If they hate Harry Potter so much then they should write a better, more original and successful series. Because it's so easy, right? Mhm. :)

Well, Draco is obviously a character who cannot stick up for himself, but he is put in an extremely difficult situation. He stands up to Voldemort, his parents die. Nothing is ever black and white.
And Malfoy is for a very long time a stereotypical bully, but Rowling shows who Malfoy really is in the later books: a terrified teenager who's all bark and no bite.
But yes, it does teach you to fight for your beliefs. Harry, Hermione, and Ron being the most obvious examples. Taking a stand against Voldemort and defending other wizards.

Completely agree. :) One of the reasons why I love the series.
Plus having Hermione as a smart heroine is inspiring to thousands girls and even women. I know she inspired me when the series came out.

^ Hermione is very inspirational and a great role model for women. She's brilliant, loyal, devoted, and (at least in the book) she's awkward looking, not beautiful. Which makes girls realize they have more to them than just being attractive. Also, Hermione is an extremely emotional character. She tends to cry a lot under pressure. That shows girls that it's okay to be emotional, okay to cry, but it also shows them to be strong and fight until the very end.

That goes for the creator of this discussion topic. If you don't care for a book, great! But elaborate on why you don't like the ..."
I really agree with you! Putting down people who like something is completely immature and rude! Learn some manners!

"
Me too. My family keeps on joking, that, I am a little Hermione, because, I love to read, I love school, and I love learning new things. =]

exactly

I know! I love J.K. Rowling for that. I used to hate my emotions and backed away from them because we are taught to suppress them and are criticized if we show emotion. Emotion is seen as a sign on weakness, but not in Rowling's world. It's extremely positive and inspiring. :)

Aw that's so cute. She shows us that girls don't need to depend on looks, as it has been said before.

Exactly, and women are looked down on for being "too emotional", which makes them "weak". But Hermione shows us that it's okay to cry. In fact, the emotional Hermione at least looks to her friends for help, and does her best to work with them to get out of sticky situation. Harry, on the other hand, tends to let his emotions get the better of him. As seen in OotP when he distances himself from everyone because he is so stressed and scared.

i had them since first grade too!

Calling readers of a best selling series 'all idiots' is a bit of a stretch. The Twilight Saga (oh do i have a giggle everytime i get to call that a saga) is the stupidest thing to ever kill trees, but I am crossing my fingers that at least some of those poor people have brains in their heads, otherwise, this mass popularity-driven world may just be as doomed as our elder generation assumes. Goddess help us all. If you're going to insult an author's talent, or a book, do that. But name-calling is probably beneath you.

At first I thought you were calling everyone an idiot and was about to retort, but then I realized you were making a point lol

I love the sarcasm. But I think that particular person does not understand that. If her understanding of having a discussion is by saying 'the series is stupid' then she is far beyond that.

Hey! I read it and I am not a complete idiot. The books are AMAZING! So there. If you are going to call them stupid at least read them.

i must say, the fans annoy the absolute crap out of me, as does the excessive and overpriced merch, but the books and movies will always have a special place in my heart, and are among the best in their genre - heck, the best in all genres.

Wow, lots of very heated discussion here. I want to say one thing right up front: Whether or not people read one particular series does not determine whether or not their an idiot--they would for sure be an idiot if they did not even know how to read!
With that said, I'll admit that I was sort of naturally antagonistic toward the series when I first started reading it, but felt that I couldn't give a negative "review" without actually reading the books...so I read the first one, and pretty genuinely hated it. Harry is such a brat (and pretty much everyone else in the book too), and the only kind of conflict/tension that propelled the plot forward was that of injustice. And since Harry's (and his friends') responses to their predicaments were neither admirable nor inspiring to me...I didn't read any more. (That was 5 or 6 years ago.)
But then I start writing reviews of kids books online and I had people asking me what I thought of the Harry Potter series... so I decided to give it a try once again. I am now in the middle of the fifth book. And my short summary is that I pretty much detested the first two books, the Prisoner of Azkaban I really liked, and the Goblet of Fire was very fun--I would probably actually read it again someday. But I just HATE the Order of Phoenix (so far--I'm a bit more than half through.) Harry seems to have lost all the maturity that he gained in the first four years and returned to his bratty beginnings. He mouths off and is belligerent to everyone, even his friends. From someone who has actually fought Lord Voldemort on multiple occasions and should know how hard it will be to prepare for the coming battle, I would expect a lot more understanding and cooperation for the cause than he gives. And so far, there's nothing very new or inventive that is introduced!
Anyway, that's a super short summary. I like that the stories are creative and interesting--and yet, I feel like Rowling does a terrible job of describing the magical process. (Do they just say the words? It can't possibly be that easy because so many of them have trouble doing the spells!) And I also think she has some inconsistencies in her characters (Harry for one) and for another example, Snape is so outrageously deaf and murderous at the end of the 3rd book (Azkaban)... Well, the impression that I get is 1) either Dumbledore is taken in by Snape and doesn't know he's SO unreasonable. 2) Snape really isn't that bad (yes his is.) 3) Snape will eventually turn out to be bad, in which case Dumbledore will have been deceived about him for what, 14 years? Not very likely is it? And if Snape is purposely deceiving Dumbledore, you'd think he try harder to hide his vindictive nature.
Anyway. I think these books, because of their inventiveness and the fast-paced writing, are among the most popular among the YA fantasy genre... but they are not life changing. Honestly, they're just pulp fiction, designed to please the masses (which it does a VERY good job at, and which I have no problem with.) But it also means that they, under no circumstances, should be called the greatest books of all time. And if you truly truly believe that they are, please go read some other books: like
Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens, Henry V (Shakespeare) and Les Misérables (Victor Hugo) or something more lighthearted--like The Virginian(wonderful and inspiring western by Owen Wister.

or
The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword

Just curious. Why then you rate it 5 stars?

I haven't read Percy Jackson so I have no say.

Just curious. Why then you rate it 5 stars?"
