RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Do you like potatoes? In what forms (besides tater tots, of course, BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS TATER TOTS ROCK AND THEY DESERVE A SEPARATE CONVERSATION:)

Do you liked mashed potatoes? From the box or mashed yourself? Do you have a particular type of potato you like, the little red ones or the Yukon golds, or does it not matter? What about baked potatoes? What do you put on them? Other potato commentary? I'm not touching fries, I've noticed. What about them?

I'm not so much about the potatoes. They taste ... meh to me. Sweeter sometimes buys those huge bags of them and it is a chore for me to get all the way through the bag before things start turning green and sprouting legs.

message 3: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yes, I forgot about roasted potatoes...they're so good and so damn easy.

I can't do them right. They're either undercooked or overdone and chewy. What am I doing wrong?

message 5: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Take them out before they're overdone.

Yes. I have a Fanny Farmer recipe I usually try, using olive oil and rosemary. But I can't seem to cut them into uniform chunks, perhaps. Or maybe I need to add water to the pan before I cover it with foil so they steam?

message 7: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I love roasted potato wedges and also potato latkes. Mmmmmmmm. Latkes.

Ok, I'm heading home from the office shortly. I'm getting a SMALL bag of potatoes and I will try this no foil madness. maybe that's been my problem all along!

message 9: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Tonight I did it with small red potatoes with the skins left on. Otherwise pretty much the way Bun does it. Yummy and brown and delicious.

message 10: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

message 11: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Not a big potato fan. The occasional french fry will make it to my plate, or maybe a small amount of mashed with a steak. Other than that, you can keep the taters.

Cambridge (hsquare) | 509 comments Must love potatoes here, come potato season lots of schools still close and the kids hit the fields. :) Bake em, roast em, mash em scallop em . . . skin on, yes yes yes!

message 13: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Good stuff, C.

message 14: by Cambridge (new)

Cambridge (hsquare) | 509 comments No doubt! :) And let's not forget Vodka we get from a good ole tater :) Cheers Lar!

Abigail (42stitches) | 150 comments Love potatoes...and practically all kinds and every way. Love sweet potatoes and sweet potatoes fries. Like french fries and mashed white potatoes. My husband puts cinnamon in them. It's strangely good. my favorite though is roasted red skins or mashed red skins with the skins. Mashed potatoes HAVE to be dirty. And I like to put weird stuff on my baked potatoes. Cottage cheese, Taco Bell sauce or chili paste, sausage gravy, Parmesan cheese and butter...

message 16: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) I love potatoes.Especially french fries & not those pussy ass skinny ones with the burnt ends.I want fat soggy mushy steak fries with hot sauce & ketchup.Mmmm.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments LL makes me feel like a punk for eating shoestring fries occasionally

message 18: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Don't be such a punk.

message 19: by Kevin (last edited Apr 19, 2010 06:46AM) (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i cook most fries in the oven and the fat ones take too long to get done

message 20: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I like them semi-big, and double fried to be sure thay are plenty crispy. First fry at a lower temp to cook through, then drain and refry at a higher temp to crisp up. Crunchy good -- but not health food by any means.

message 21: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments that is how places like TGIFriday's cook their crispy fries. they parboil them first at low temp and then quick fry them later to get them crunchy

message 22: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) But not parboil in water, Kevin. That would be disastrous.

Who's stopping you, Barb?

message 24: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments yes larry but that is what it is. parboiling in oil at a low temp. then they hang them on racks and most of the grease drains off but they are still saturated in oil. they then quick fry them in hot oil to crisp them up. that is why they taste so good. double grease

message 25: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yup. Not health food but damn good.

message 26: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) I once got these double deep fried french fries with pesto & gouda at my local vegetarian restuarant.Good idea on paper but they tasted like crap.Ahh well.Lesson learned I guess.

message 27: by Félix (last edited Apr 19, 2010 07:10AM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) Wouldn't appeal to me. But what would you expect from a damned veggiehead place, LL?

message 28: by Desperado (last edited Apr 19, 2010 07:12AM) (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) Eh,some vegetarian foods are pretty good.I'm half in love with Kashi & their super healthy entrees with ingredients I have to look up.Wtf is Amaranth anyway?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I want to give a shoutout to potato salad, made with Yukon gold potatos, skins left on. I can eat just that for dinner in the summer and be happy. :)

message 35: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i like the hot pepper potato salad. chunky, family style

message 36: by Félix (last edited Apr 19, 2010 01:34PM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) Lots of things taste like crap when they're not made right. Also, everyone likes something different.

Now if you put pickles or olives in it it tastes like crap.

One of the barbecue places in Austin puts pickle juice in its potato salad. Yuck. I said YUCK .

message 37: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments no doubt. olives :(

yuck

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I prefer pickle, olive, and mustard-free potato salad.
Potatoes, celery, hard-boiled eggs, onion, mayo, salt and pepper, and just a teaspoon of vinegar, maybe. That's it, that's all you need.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Oh yes, potato salad is an exception I'll make to my potatoes = meh feeling.

I like it Jackie style, but with mustard.

message 40: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That sounds heavenly, Jackie.
