Ivory (ivory19) Well I am away working in another city, and thought I better grab a book to relax with in the evenings.....my pick ...... The Madman's Daughter. Read some reviews from past readers , seems to be a love/hate relationship with this book. Guess we will see how things turn out!

Just started the audiobook of The Isle of Blood The Isle of Blood (The Monstrumologist, #3) by Rick Yancey - Brigid has made me very nervous about this one! Also picked up the audio of Someday, Someday, Maybe Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham from the library this morning and hope to get that started after Isle of Blood.

message 4910: by Karen’s Library (new)

Karen’s Library | 574 comments Really enjoying Ready Player One by Ernest Cline on audio. Or maybe it's just Will Wheaton I'm enjoying. ;-)

I'm a bit late for the group read but better late than never.

Also reading This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers for our May group read.

And enjoying Hunger (Gone, #2) by Michael Grant even though it's really freaky!

message 4911: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 836 comments Lol I'm enjoying Hunger too,it just feels like such an easy read after some of my other recent ones :)

Karen let me know your thoughts on This is Not a Test please! I have heard mixed things so far.

Hope you and David enjoy Hunger. I liked it but like I said could not commit to 4 more books of it.

I'm like a third of the way through This is Not a Test. So far I think it's just okay. The characters have been in the same place just kind of moping around for most of the book, and for a while I could barely keep track of who was who because they all talk/act the same way. It's getting a bit better and more exciting, and I do like the writing style ... but it was off to a fairly rough start for me. Hopefully it gets better as it goes along!

No problem, Heidi!

Oh yeah I forgot to mention ... I finished reading The 5th Wave this morning. Hmm. I liked it, but I didn't love it as much as I wanted to, over all. I just didn't think it was nearly as innovative as the Monstrumologist books; it felt like it was trying a bit too hard to be popular and/or get a movie deal (which it already has, by the way). Basically ... I just felt like it was enjoyable, but it didn't really stand out from all the other dystopian YA books out there ... I expected Rick Yancey to write something as good as Chaos Walking or Angelfall or something along those lines. But, oh well.

To put it more concisely, I liked it and it was good ... It just wasn't amazing, in my opinion.

I agree, Brigid. I'm 2/3rd's through and it's finally picked up a bit. I'm still at a 2 star rating unless it gets better.

I agree, David! Needed a book that doesn't require so much emotions or thinking as our reads of Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #3) by Cassandra Clare and Fragments (Partials, #2) by Dan Wells . Of course, Hunger won't get 5 stars either. ;-)

Ut oh - I have so many other books to read I may skip this one for now then. I returned to A Corner of White A Corner of White by Jaclyn Moriarty today and have only 40 pages left. In true J. Moriarty fashion I was totally confused for most of it but it seems to be coming together now. Up next I am finally starting UnWholly UnWholly (Unwind, #2) by Neal Shusterman - I was waiting to see if it was released on audiobook (just like Dust & Decay) but alas it has not been yet so I will read the print version I guess :(

Ooh awesome, Heidi! I loved UnWholly. I don't know if I loved it quite as much as Unwind but it was still amazing.

This morning I finished This is Not a Test. Eh ... it was disappointing for me. I ended up giving it 2 stars, although maybe it's more like a 2.5. For a book about a zombie apocalypse I found it pretty boring, unfortunately.

I just started:

The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

I liked the movie, so naturally I thought it would be a good idea to read the book. It's okay so far. I'm a bit nervous about it because my mom absolutely loathed it and we almost always have the same opinion on books. So ... we'll see how the rest of it goes. :P

message 4925: by Gwennie (new)

I actually have the audiobook of that on my sansa but have not gotten to it yet. I have enjoyed the authors two YA books Sorta Like a Rock Star by Matthew Quick and Boy21 by Matthew Quick but he def. has a different writing style that others may not like.

Vered (vered_ehsani) It happens on occasion...! I'm like that with pretty much all of Grisham's books - I think they make way better movies than books.

message 4938: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 110 comments I started reading the Percy Jackson books to my (almost) 7 year old boy. He LOVES them too! We're currently almost finished with The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, #2) by Rick Riordan . Because I've been reading these books to him, I still haven't gotten around to The Serpent's Shadow (Kane Chronicles, #3) by Rick Riordan OR The Mark of Athena (The Heroes of Olympus, #3) by Rick Riordan yet.

Meanwhile, I'm still enjoying The 5th Wave (The Fifth Wave, #1) by Rick Yancey , but I'm finding it a little predictable. Not sure if that's because it is YA, or because I've just read too damned many stories. Either way, I'm sticking with it for now. But I might start chipping away at something else too.

I'm starting to feel kind of in a funk again, so I'm hoping to find something to pick me up a bit.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments Hmm, I hadn't thought of reading the Percy Jackson books to my kids yet. I bet my almost 8-year-old would love them.

I'm finishing up:
The Monsters of Otherness (Erec Rex, #2) by Kaza Kingsley and still haven't quite started Watership Down by Richard Adams . I'm also listening to The Hobbit.

I am of the same opinion, Brigid. Not my cup of tea. I didn't like any of the characters. Very depressing. Glad it was a short book or I would have DNF'd for sure.

Yeah, agreed. None of the characters were appealing to me, and ultimately the story was just pretty one-note and depressing ... depressing to the point where the story just seemed kind of meaningless. At the end it was just kind of like, "Welp, that was a downer. Moving on!" Haha.
