I started A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness this morning. I am so happy I got the actual book from the library instead of getting it for my Kindle. The illustrations are a wonderful addition to the story.

I missed out on the illustrations because I listened to the audio but Jason Issacs was fantastic. Sounds like I have to check out the actual book too - I had to do the same with the Book Thief where I went back and bought the print after I listened to the audiobook so I could see the pictures.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I finished The Alchemyst (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #1) by Michael Scott

I started The False Prince (The Ascendance Trilogy, #1) by Jennifer A. Nielsen last night and am almost done with it already. I think it is a fun and easy read.

I downloaded Overdrive to my phone and think I might use it to read The Book Thief. I've got to get back into the reading groove before I attempt that one. It has been light reads only for me this summer.

Yeah it is not a light read at all. Not good for a back to back read with A Monster Calls either unless you like being depressed!

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments HEIDI: I thought The Alchemyst was OK. A little bit slow to me and some of the characters weren't too deep. I understand it gets better as the series goes along. It has Egyptian gods, Norse gods, etc. so if you like that, you may enjoy it more than me. I do plan on continuing with the series but not right now.

Umm I know Kournti really liked it. I listened to the audiobook (narrated by the fantastic Jim Dale). It was very well written and imaginative but I never really connected with the story 100%. I would say if you have a good imagination and can just go with a story you would like it. Overall I liked it but did not love it (kind of like Daughter of Smoke & Bone - speaking of which I think if you loved that (DOSB) you would love Night Circus too).

Just started The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa because I got to a point in A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness that was making me cry at my desk on my break. I liked the Iron Fey series by Kagawa so I'm hoping this one is good.

I'll finish A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness tonight in the comfort of my own bed where I can bawl my eyes out in private.

@Shannen - Gahhh I adore A Monster Calls. But just the thought of it makes me want to sob into my pillow ... D: And yes, the illustrations are gorgeous. Also I really liked The Immortal Rules, even though I wasn't expecting to. I haven't read The Iron Fey books so I don't know how the series compare, but from what I've heard most people are saying Immortal Rules is better ...

@Bluemoon - I'm so glad you liked The Monstrumologist! Yaaay! Hmm, Daughter of Smoke & Bone is next on my list. I also have very high expectations so now I'm a bit worried. Haha.

Finished

Dust & Decay (Benny Imura, #2) by Jonathan Maberry

*Sniffles* Ahh such a sad ending. I'm so bummed. But it was still really good, of course.

Just started

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor

Errrm I'm not sure what to think of it so far, but I've only read like 30 pages.

I finished A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness the night before we went on vacation. I cried so hard. Just when I thought I was done crying, I would start again. Probably shouldn't have read it so close to my mom's passing. :( It was an excellent book and I'd recommend it to anyone.

My mom passed when I was 13 and I still cried for like 2 days Shannen. It is simply just an awesome book.

SETH. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN.

Oh yeah... I've been trying to decide whether I should read that or not. Was it better than the first book?

message 3040: by Seth (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) | 240 comments Shannen, you should read it :D There's something about these books that makes them so ... readable. Even if what you're reading isn't the best thing in the world, you just want to keep reading. And yes, I'm back haha!

BRIGID. I HAVE BEEN IN MY HOUSE xD Was it better than the first book? Hmm. I dunno. There was this weird mystery with a bunch of clues that just seemed WAY too convenient. But it was very fast-paced, and Elder didn't irk me as much as he did in the first book. Though I still found both he and Amy rather boring ... But whatever. Read it anyway.

I am still listening to Bitterblue (Graceling Realm, #3) by Kristin Cashore on audiobook. It is 15 hours long and on a Playaway so I only listen to it through my CD player while I am getting ready (about 30 minutes per day) so it is taking forever! I have no idea where I am in the book with this damn Playaway I am on section 4 (nearly done with section 4 actually I think??) So I hope that is a good thing because I have no idea! It is much slower than the first two books. Where is the action of my beloved Graceling! I want some heads to roll gosh darn it!!
