Elora Mitchell | 578 comments I don't know how you guys can do it--I think I'd be a walking Popsicle. ;) Although when it gets to be around 50 degrees here, I'm dressing in LAYERS and shivering, and my friend (originally from Minnesota) is just fine in a tshirt and pants.

What I wouldn't give for a 50 degree day. I love those and run around in a t-shirt and jeans!

Donna (BookDragonGirl) (bookdragongirl) @Brigid I'm in Massachusetts too! It's sooo cold!! But yes, at least it's not -35' :P

His writing style is always amazing! And he changes it up with every book, which is something I really admire. :)

Ugh, I'm so jealous of the 75-degree weather! I'm freezing cold even inside my house. :P

So excited to see your thoughts on the other two Patrick Ness books Elora! I agree with Brigid that he mixes up his styles.

I say I am jealous of all your warm temperatures but to be honest I like living in a place where there are 4 seasons. Somehow I think the Fall and the Spring would be less appreciated if we didn't have our cold winters and hot summers. I could be wrong though!

Donna (BookDragonGirl) (bookdragongirl) I agree Heidi, I love having 4 seasons and wouldn't want it any other way!!! :)

message 9765: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments Yeah. We don't have 4 seasons. We get a two week window of an allergy infested spring, and fall is marked by the first frost and all the leaves falling off the trees. Winter is "cold" compared to what you get (I think our lowest was 12 degrees this year). But I wouldn't have it any other way either! :)

Donna (BookDragonGirl) (bookdragongirl) I set my other two books aside and started Strings by David Estes I am so excited, I've been waiting for this!!!!

@Elora - I love that, too! Many of my favorite authors are ones that experiment a lot with style. :D A Monster Calls and Chaos Walking are both amazing! Hope you like them.

@Heidi - That's true––I do think the long winter helps me appreciate the warmer seasons more. But I also really hate the cold, lol. :P

@Ashley - Yes, I love Scorpio Races!! I've been thinking I should read that one again. It's been a while.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I am about 1/3 of the way through Erebos by Ursula Poznanski

Since it's due back at the library in 2 days and the fine is $1/day if it's late, I think that's what I'll be focusing on for the next couple of days.

I'm 2/3 through The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan but that is not an inter-library loan and will probably be put on the back burner for awhile.

I finally picked up a copy of Erebos the other day via Thriftbooks -- I checked it out from the library for that first read and enjoyed it so much I wanted a copy for my own. Imagine my surprise when the copy that showed up was an ARC! How funny is that?

Kristen Taber | 506 comments I just had a long post almost finished and my page refreshed and wiped it out. Argh!

I'll have to come back and write it again after the kids are in bed. I finished Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles, #2) by Marissa Meyer . You can put me in the camp of it not being my favorite book in the series already and I'll explain why briefly when I get back, but I'm still in awe over Meyer's writing. Seriously, this woman is my hero.

On a personal note, and speaking of cold weather, my youngest daughter got sick so we had to postpone our trip. Now I'm shoveling snow and waiting for an ice storm instead of seeing my grandparents in warm Florida. Needless to say, I'm really disappointed and planning a hot toddy tonight while I start Cress (The Lunar Chronicles, #3) by Marissa Meyer or binge watch Netflix. I haven't decided which will cheer me up more.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I just ordered Cinder, Scarlet & Cress from Scholastic. Winter was $20, so I figured I would get that from somewhere else or at another time.

Sorry to hear about missing Florida. That stinks! I hope that you can go soon.

Sucks to think that you could have been in a warm place! Hope everythings ok with your daughter now tho.

For me I prefer Scarlet rather than Cinder. I will eventually get around to Cress and Winter

I do think it's incredibly well written, and which books people prefer will depend on the types of chracters they like. I LOVED the parts with Cinder, Iko and Thorne. They were solid and probably the best scenes out of both books for me. But I found Wolf to be annoying and wishy-washy and although explained away later, that didn't fit for me still. I also hate insta-love, which didn't help here, and I found Scarlet's blind trust, particularly when it was obvious she shouldn't have and with predictable outcomes, frustrating. But again, that's just me and my preference in personalities and love stories.
The biggest issue for me, though, is I knew exactly who Wolf was and guessed what was going to happen the minute he appeared, so I spent most of the book waiting for Scarlet to catch up to me as she's given bread crumbs and ignoring what I felt was obvious. As I said, it was extremely well written and I think the bread crumbs and conclusions were appropriately placed (aside form the afforementioned trust), so this was my problem as a reader and not the book's problem. Instead of having a feeling of suspense and drama, i just wound up with impatience. Once the outcome I had expected happened and they were in the opera house, toward the end, I enjoyed it becaude I wanted to see how the characters linked up, but up until that point, I had trouble finding investment other than swooning over the incredible prose and laughing at Thorne.

I dont think there was truly much wrong with the book. It just wasn't my cup of tea in some ways. It was still one of the best books I've read in a long time, though, so don't let my gripes fool you :).

I can't imagine anyone not loving them. I hope to start Cress soon, but I'll need to.wait on Winter until the price comes down or the library has it in stock. At least the wait wont be as long as having started the series at the first book release!

I often read 2-3 books at a time, but it's not something I'm proud of. :P Usually it just slows down my reading of all the books involved, lol. I think it's just that I'll get a new book and I'll be like, "ooh, shiny!!!" and I end up starting it even if I'm reading something else already. I don't tend to get books mixed up, though.

I think I can handle it because what I want to read really depends on my mood, and thus I usually read completely different books when I've got several going at once -- I've got my audiobook that I listen to at work, then two or three different ones at home. Like now, I've got Truthwitch and Malala's memoir in progress :)

Donna (BookDragonGirl) (bookdragongirl) I very rarely read more than one book at a time. When I do I think my rating of a book goes down. If I read one book cover to cover and really get involved in the story I like it much better. Once in a while I do it, especially when I'm not getting into a book. Or sometimes it's because a book I have been waiting for and so excited to read has just been released. Like right now I've got three books under currently reading. I was reading one that I couldn't get into, but want to finish, so I picked up another I knew I'd enjoy. But then Strings came out and I've been eagerly anticipating that book, so I dropped the other two and am just reading Strings (and absolutely loving it btw). But when I finish Strings I will make myself finish the others and then get back to one book at a time. There's just so many great books out there I want to read that I get out of control!!! Haha :D
