Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Finished my reread of Demon Evolution (The Evolution Trilogy, #2) by David Estes loved it! And I just realized I never did write a review for it, better get on that!

I also started and finished Rebel Wing (Rebel Wing #1) by Tracy Banghart today! I really liked this one. I read it all in one sitting! Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Next I'm reading Paper Towns by John Green

message 8955: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 836 comments Yay, thanks Jenny! I'm almost done with Rebel Wing, around 65%. I wish it was less focused on the romance...that's my only complaint. But the writing is good and the overall story has totally got my attention.

message 8956: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments David, I thought there was less and less romance the more you got through it...I didn't really mind the romance, because for the most part, it was all in the girls head. Girls think about that stuff A LOT I have to tell you. When we are in love, its always in our thoughts, even while thinking and doing other things. Just the way we are wired I guess!

The romance part of it was very predictable and cliched I'm afraid to say. But I LOVED the rest of it. Let me know, are you past "THE DREAM" yet? I think you are, but let me know, I HAVE to talk to SOMEONE about that whole thing! Its KILLING me!!

Heidi, do you have any cozies you would Recommend? My mother LOVES cozies and she literally has trouble finding good ones she hasn't read! ;) She is 87 and cares for my dad, and I would LOVE to be able to recommend something new to her! :)

Oh wow do I love me some some cozies!! I have a shelf here of my favorites but can list a few for you. State of the Onion State of the Onion (A White House Chef Mystery, #1) by Julie Hyzy Murder for Choir Murder for Choir (Glee Club, #1) by Joelle Charbonneau Her Royal Spyness Her Royal Spyness (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #1) by Rhys Bowen Sprinkle with Murder Sprinkle with Murder (Cupcake Bakery Mystery, #1) by Jenn McKinlay Lye in Wait Lye in Wait (Home Crafting Mystery, #1) by Cricket McRae Tressed to Kill Tressed to Kill by Lila Dare Calamity Jayne Calamity Jayne (Calamity Jayne Mystery, #1) by Kathleen Bacus Still Life Still Life (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #1) by Louise Penny . Does she mind mild sexual content and/or paranormal activity?? A lot of my favorite cozies have a paranormal element like Woof at the Door Woof at the Door (Call of the Wylde #1) by Laura Morrigan

message 8967: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Minor | 276 comments Thank you!!!!!! I am so excited!!! She doesn't like paranormal -I have tried to get her to! ;) - but mild sexual content is fine! : I can't wait to recommend some of these to her, and maybe buy one for her as a surprise! :) Thank you SOOO much, Heidi!

Dixie Minor | 276 comments I finished The Killing Woods The Killing Woods by Lucy Christopher and I really liked it! It was a recommended book at Malaprops bookstore in Asheville, which is SUCH a cool bookstore that I had always heard of, and so I picked it up while we were visiting in Asheville. Anyway! It was a slow-in a good, creepy way-atmospheric psychological thriller.

Ok cool. I don't like paranormal much in regular books but it works in cozies for me (psychics, ghost whisperers, witches, etc.) I was glad to help. I hope she likes them if she tries them. I tried to list several different kinds.

Heidi, I agree about the paranormal in books like that. I love it in the Charlaine Harris books, especially her new series, because it is such a cute small town, but . . . Not. :) I actually like paranormal anyway, but I think the contrast is good in books that you wouldn't think of it in! I am excited about these new titles and so is my mom! :D

I sort of disagree, I felt like the romance (and burgeoning love triangle) remained the focus the whole way through, up until the very very end. Although I'm pretty sure that was the point and the intended character arc, which is fine. That being said, the story itself was really solid and the writing top-notch, so I enjoyed the read very much :)

Um, yes, I read "the dream" part LOL. What did you want to talk about?

RON! I totally agree with Heidi! It's definitely a MUST. I actually think that The one thing that the movies actually got right are the personalities of the characters.

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Read them!!! The books are a hundred times better than the movies. And actually, Bluemoon's right, the casting for the HP was dead on...each charcter is PERFECT. Especially Snape, Hermione, Harry, Sirius, McGonagell, and Lupin.

I read the first four HP books AFTER seeing the first four movies. Personally, I had no issue with that approach at all. I view the movies and the books as separate entertainment experiences, although in this case both were extremely well done. Trust me, your life will be enriched by reading the books!

Same. I didn't read the first book until about a week before the fifth movie was coming out in theaters and it didn't hurt my reading at all.

Read them, Ron. If you like the movies, you'll love the books. Not to mention they're a landmark in the entire reading community that are totally worth being read by all.

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Finished Paper Towns by John Green I'm not really sure what to rate this one...I think I'll settle on a 3.5. I didn't like this one nearly as much as Will Grayson, The Fault in Our Stars, or Looking for Alaska. Honestly, this one was pretty depressing. I did love about the last third of it. The road trip was the best part, and made the book worth reading. I also loved the whole concept of "paper towns" and I'm a sucker for maps :)

I gave it 3 stars. I liked the main protagonist but I hated Margo. In fact, I really think Margo was suffering from a serious mental health condition (and I don't say that lightly). I did like the drinking scene. It cracked me up. All in all I thought it could have been much better and I think most of my issues had to do with Margo and why she really disappeared.

I agree with both of you! I also gave it a 3, I think. Probably my least favorite John Green book (that I've read, anyway). Like Heidi said, I didn't like Margo (or the whole Manic Pixie Dream Girl plot in general) and I felt it dealt with the issue of mental illness a little too lightly. I did like the road trip part but that's pretty much all I remember about it. I also get a little annoyed by how John Green always defends it saying Margo isn't a MPDG because (view spoiler) in the end, but like ... that's not how it works??? :P I could rant all day about it, but yeah ... some things about that book really irked me.

Margo is seriously Bi-Polar and was in a manic phase during most of the book. She needs medication. Again I do not say this lightly as I think the term Bi-Polar is used too easily sometimes. I work with clients who suffer from this disease and she reminded me of several of them.

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Heidi, I was thinking the EXACT same thing!!

What held the charm for me was the fact that, even though Margo left and it really affected Q, through Margo's "pranks" he started his own journey...yes he was focused on her, but in the meantime, he got closer to his friends, made a few new ones, and basically started becoming his own man. I think the whole point wasn't even Margo, but his own journey.

But yes, I did feel kind of let down at the very end. But I LOVED that road trip, that was so awesome!

I also wish that here been an epilogue of just him and his friends over the summer or something. Again, I loved that group of characters together. The ending with (view spoiler) just didn't seem like the way to end it.

@Heidi - Yeah, exactly––it's pretty upsetting, really. And I don't think it's cool when books romanticize disorders like that. Like obviously it doesn't make you a lesser person, but also having a mental disorder is not just a "quirk," it's something that really affects your life. She shows a lot of warning signs of having some kind of depression, bipolar disorder, etc. and I felt like it was kind of passed off as being "cute/quirky." I don't think that was necessarily the intention, but it rubbed me the wrong way.

@Jenny - Totally agree! I liked the relationship between Q and his friends ... Didn't care much about Margo, honestly. :P

My fave John Green book is DEF Fault in Our Stars, with Will Grayson right behind! I also really did like Looking for Alaska.
