It's weird because even though the story for me was meh, I ended up genuinely loving the characters enough that I want to see where they all end up. I don't know that I've ever had such strong feelings for characters while not caring all that much about the story before haha. Kind of odd really, but there it is haha.

I get what you are saying. I had no issues with the characters either and agree they were better than the story that they were unfortunately plopped into!

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Finished:

Before Tomorrowland by Jeff Jensen 4 stars, great adventure!

The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West 4 stars. Typical YA contemporary romance, with the proper angst. Enjoyed it enough :)

The Elite (The Selection, #2) by Kiera Cass 4 stars. This series is sort of like my obsession I have with Beverly Hills, 90210 (my old one.) Addicted to the drama!

Across a Star-Swept Sea (For Darkness Shows the Stars, #2) by Diana Peterfreund 4.5 stars. Loved this as much as the first book! These books are just so original, and I loved the characters too!

Shadow and Bone (The Grisha, #1) by Leigh Bardugo 5 stars, reread. Love this fantasy!

Arclight (Arclight, #1) by Josin L. McQuein 3.5 stars. I was majorly confused through much of this book. It all came together in the end with a fabulous ending. Not sure if I'll read the sequel yet.

The Evolution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #2) by Michelle Hodkin 4 stars. THAT ENDING!! HOLY CRAP!!!

Nikki Powergloves- A Hero is Born (Nikki Powergloves, #1) by David Estes 4 stars. Really fun adventure for kids! I enjoyed it :)

Rebel Queen by Michelle Moran 4 stars. Really liked this one. It covered some history in India that I did not know much about. The woman in it were incredible!

Right now reading:

House of Royals by Keary Taylor for review. So far its okay, although I haven't been blown away. I love the author, so I'm really hoping it gets better!

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin I am LOVING this book! I've laughed a lot already!

This Shattered World (Starbound, #2) by Amie Kaufman not far in yet, so but so far loving it!

The Lockwood & Co. ones are fantastic if you like mysteries, ghosts and fun banter. The STORM book is more middle school and is OK so far.

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Finished The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin 5 star read.

This. Book. Is. Brilliant!

LOVED every word, every sentence, every page. The whole thing was perfect. I laughed (a lot), I cried, and I melted with happiness. It had the same flavor of "I Am The Messenger" by Marcus Zusak.

This is a must read. Seriously. This is a book for Booklovers.

I do not want to return this book to the library! I need to buy myself a copy, pronto!

I'm so glad you posted this. Based on the cover I would pass right over this book without a second glance. I decided to check out the description since you fived it and, man, that sounds like it could really be something I could love.

message 8689: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Tommy, I think you would love this one! Very unique writing and fantasy!

I've kind of been on a roll lately, too-- Across a Star-Swept Sea (For Darkness Shows the Stars, #2) by Diana Peterfreund The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley --and just last night I finished This Shattered World (Starbound, #2) by Amie Kaufman and loved it! Another 5 star :)

I hope you're right because I'm almost certainly gonna give it a go.

And yeah, I can read 50 3-star reads in a row without being let down. My expectations are so low, I just love stories, them being great is a bonus, not a requirement haha. I did 5 star a comic last night :)

Up next I'll either read Bone, Vol. 9 Crown of Horns (Bone #9) by Jeff Smith (the final book in the Bone series, not counting the 2 prequels and 1 companion book(I'll be reading those as well)) or Girl of Nightmares (Anna, #2) by Kendare Blake

A little more than halfway done with:

The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton

It's okay. The premise is interesting and the writing is good but it's just a bit ... dry? And something about it makes me feel kind of uncomfortable? I don't know. It's not really working for me, but I like it enough that I'll finish it.

I'm also about a third of the way through:

None of the Above by I.W. Gregorio

It's also ... not great. And I'm disappointed because I really wanted to like it. It's about a girl who finds out she's intersex and is trying to deal with all these issues of gender identity and sexuality and whatnot, which I think is an important issue! But unfortunately so far I'm finding it a bit sexist (like, all the female characters are really shallow and petty, and all the male characters are just very "bro"-y and whatnot). So it's kind of upsetting me, but I'm still hoping it somehow redeems itself.

Exactly, I'm the same way. I don't expect every book I pick up to be amazing literature. I just hope to be entertained! If I'm entertained, I'm happy :) And since I love so read to much, I usually am entertained!

That might've been my biggest book disappointment in the past few years at least. I've read worse, for sure, but nothing worse that I was more intrigued by. I wanted to love it so much and just couldn't finish it :/
