I am listening to our monthly group read Swim the Fly Swim the Fly (Swim the Fly, #1) by Don Calame https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... and like it so far. It is narrated by Nick Podehl, whom I love, so that helps :)

I got an ARC of Dove Arising but I never got around to reading it. It does sound really cool, though!

I had super high expectations for Half Bad and then I found it disappointing, but hopefully you like it more than I did! I liked the writing, but didn't feel much for the characters and I found the pacing really weird and confusing. I think I set my expectations too high because I saw a blurb that compared it to Patrick Ness and Markus Zusak. :P

... As for me I've literally been reading the same book for like seven months now, with a couple other random books here and there. *headsmack* I've been horrible lately. I would make the excuse of my senior project, but I also spend so much time on the internet when I should be reading. >_<

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments Since I last posted I finished Theodosia and the Last Pharaoh (Theodosia Throckmorton, #4) by R.L. LaFevers (really fun series, each book better than the last) and Locke & Key, Vol. 1 Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill Locke & Key, Vol. 2 Head Games by Joe Hill Locke & Key, Vol. 3 Crown of Shadows by Joe Hill (3 more volumes to go. Such good stuff).

I'm gonna start Kick-Ass 3 by Mark Millar tonight, and then up next I'll read The Enchantress (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #6) by Michael Scott and finish the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series.

I'm not far into it, but so far I'm liking Half Bad. It is different, the writing almost reminds me of a contemporary, and I can see the comparison to Patrick Ness and Marcus Zusak a little bit, but its not nearly as good as those guys! But, yeah, the style is similar in some ways. I always like books that are "different" and unique, and this one is definitely that!

message 8407: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments Finished Kick-Ass 3 by Mark Millar and while I cannot recommend it to all here(*it's firmly in the r-rated category), the story ended up being a lot more beautiful than it had any right to be.

And now to focus in on The Enchantress (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #6) by Michael Scott

Just a shout out to the monthly "hidden gem" reads. This month we are reading Darcy's pick Swim the Fly Swim the Fly (Swim the Fly, #1) by Don Calame and next month we are reading Jenny's pick Keeping the Castle Keeping the Castle by Patrice Kindl .

I just finished Swim the Fly on audio narrated by the awesome Nick Podehl and I thought it was a nice mostly clean middle grade read. It had a lot of humor and good messages about friendship and being youself. Becky - you may want to read it to see if your son would like it??

message 8409: by Becky (new)

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments My library actually doesn't have it. I may check it out sometime, though. My son reads so quickly that I have a lot of trouble trying to preview his books before he's already read them.

I'm already worried about what I will pick for my month which I think is June.

Well boo Becky! Maybe your library will get it in the future (or another library if you have ILL).

No worries about what you are going to pick. I am sure it will be fine. We can narrow it down for you a little - that seems to be what everyone has been doing lately.

I was left to my own devices for an hour or two on Friday at a bookstore, so I decided to occupy my time reading

Saga #1 by Brian K. Vaughan
it's actually as interesting as people would say. I might read the second one if I find the second part.

You might want to check out more by Brian K. Vaughan. His stories are generally more novel-ish than most comic series, and he's less prone to overdo his series than a lot of writers. He writes to the ending he planned for, then let's it go.

I haven't. Been on my tbr list forever. I was broke at the time it came out and my library doesn't have it and I've been trying to resist pirating despite my intense want to read it haha.

I am still listening to Blood of My Blood Blood of My Blood (Jasper Dent, #3) by Barry Lyga and The Martian The Martian by Andy Weir and reading a cozy in print. It is taking me over a week to read my print books lately. Ugh! I hope this improves over the summer.

message 8431: by Becky (new)

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I read the Perfect Cover (The Squad, #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (the snarkiness is great) and skimmed The Gallagher Girls series. I find the Gallagher books interesting but not enough that I want to read every single page. Not sure why I'm in this mood. I'm also on the third book of The Heist Society. I have actually read the first two books and plan on actually reading the third one.

I need to get my inter-library loan in for the May read, Keeping the Castle Keeping the Castle by Patrice Kindl . And maybe the second book of The Naturals Killer Instinct (The Naturals, #2) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes .

I thought it was a bit outlandish at times but some of the narrator's comments were really funny. And I really liked her younger brother which is weird because I usually don't like the girl-crazy teenage boy type.

It is pretty good so far Karen. I like the audiobook narrator a lot. I think maybe my expectations were too high because I am not as in love with it as I thought I would be at this point. Maybe it will happen by the end!

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Finished Trust in Me (Wait for You, #1.5) by J. Lynn Typical NA, but I loved it, this series is one of my faves in NA!

Started A Wicked Thing (A Wicked Thing, #1) by Rhiannon Thomas and I'm really liking this one! Its a Sleeping Beauty story--what happens AFTER she wakes up from sleeping for 100 years. Its a cross between a fairy tale and a dystopian. Really fun!

Liz (LizMax) | 12 comments I just finished Bitter Is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office. Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments Finally finished The Enchantress (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #6) by Michael Scott Not the best book in the series, all and all, but the ending got me like whaaaaat?!

Also finished Bone, Vol. 1 Out from Boneville (Bone, #1) by Jeff Smith and Bone, Vol. 2 The Great Cow Race (Bone, #2) by Jeff Smith . I've been meaning to read these comics for years and am so glad I finally started. So far it's equal parts hilarious and epic.

Up next I'm gonna read The Grimjinx Rebellion by Brian Farrey to finish up the Vengekeep Prophecies trilogy. If it's as good as the first two, this could be one of my favorite series.
