I have not heard of it Darren. What is it about?

It was good, but so far I'm still liking the Percy Jackson series more. Maybe when I get to the second installment, i'll change my mind."

I liked the first two books okay, but I LOVED Mark of Athena (#3)

Hmmm...I am not much into religion in my books normally.

I read them as they came out and didn't enjoy them as much as Percy Jackson. (I read Percy Jackson straight through.) I'm going to try to read Heroes of Olympus straight through at some point. I had trouble with the changing POV's and missed having just the one snarky voice of Percy. And with so many demi-gods and gods to keep straight, it was confusing at times.

Agreed, I liked the original Percy Jackson series more. Heroes of Olympus was good too, but I also often had trouble keeping track of all the characters, and like Becky said I missed Percy's 1st-person narration.

The changing of POV is not too bad for me. I enjoyed that we got to see different perspectives. The whole Roman and Greek thing aggravated me.

Also finished...
Prodigy (Legend, #2) by Marie Lu

If I could insert an crying emoticon I would!
I'm hesitant to read the last book, but I need to know what happens!

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I know right?? Oh that end of that book...I read it when it released so I had to wait a year for hte conclusion! Its REALLY good, the last book was my favorite in the trilogy!

message 7908: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Just finished reading Rooms by Lauren Oliver and WOW that was a good tale! All kinds of twists in the end that I didn't see coming!

Next up is Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3) by Sarah J. Maas !!!

Was at chapters and looking at new books and came across...
Just One Day (Just One Day, #1) by Gayle Forman

has anyone read it? thoughts? is it just as good as If I stay?

message 7910: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I didn't like it as much as If I Stay, but it was still good and worth reading!

I liked the change of pace that having different narrators brought to the story, although Percy's snark is in a class of its own. I liked both series equally, but I haven't reread them since Blood of Olympus and I'd really like to read all 10 straight through and just see how that goes.

In other news, Rogue (Croak, #3) by Gina Damico did its best to kill me last night. Holy crap what an ending.

Bluemoon I was disappointed by Just One Day. I liked If I Stay and LOVED LOVED LOVED Where She Went so had high hopes for Just One Day but alas it did not hold up IMO. Oh well. She is a good author and I would still read her books in the future. They can't all be 5 star reads I guess.

Jenny - good to know about Rooms. I have eyed it up several times. That author is hit or miss for me. I think she is a good author but sometimes she doesn't tie it all together enough for me (aka Before I Fall)

message 7916: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments This one I thought was very well done. All tied together nicely in the end.

Thanks for the reply guys. Might not pick it up unless I see it in a bargain bin or its in the library and I'm feeling for a contemporary read.

message 7919: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 110 comments I haven't been here in forever. I hope everyone is well. I've been in a terrible reading slump lately. Just recently caught up on a couple of short stories by Patrick Rothfuss. I started a book called "The Book of Paul" by Richard Long on the bus this morning. Made me think of an old comic series, Sandman, that I read when it was first published. So I started re-reading that tonight.

Hi Lloyd *waves* - missed you! Hope your health has improved and you like your new(er) job :) I have been slacking at reading for about a year now. I barely reached 100 books last year, which for me is terrible!

Anne Marie | 4 comments Poison Study is one of my all time favourites!
I am currently starting
The Retribution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #3) by Michelle Hodkin Clariel (Abhorsen, #4) by Garth Nix and Dragon Champion (Age of Fire #1) by E.E. Knight

message 7922: by Ashley Marie (new)

ANNE MARIE: I read Poison Study years back. It was a good book. Maybe I should re-read it and the rest of the series as well!

When I first got that I was surprised it wasn't YA

message 7925: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
I loved Poison Study too but was not as big a fan of the sequel so stopped after that.

message 7926: by Becky (new)

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments It looks like most folks thought that Book 1 in Poison Study was great and the series went downhill from there. Would the first book be OK as a stand alone? Kind of like Shiver? (I really liked Shiver and didn't read the rest of the series based on folks' recommendations.)

message 7927: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 110 comments Heidi barely reached 100 books?! Wow, that IS a slump! (I think I read something like...16? And several of those were probably graphic novels)

Things are okay with me. I'm accepting my lack of reading enjoyment as a sign that I need to switch things up with my life. I've been searching for a new hobby to try and have stumbled on to something I never would have pictured myself doing: cross-stitch. I started with some little Xmas ornament 5x5 design and have since done a bit of research to try and find something tied a little bit more to my personal interests. Currently, I am waiting for a scroll frame that I ordered for my birthday (damn I'm getting old!) to ship so I can start. Needless to say, I went from a 5x5 to a design that is 25x36! (Nothing like dipping my toes into the water and now just jumping into the deep end!) I'm guessing that this project is going to probably take me about a year to finish. I'm finding the action of working on cross-stitch somewhat Zen-like for meditation, yet I'm actually DOING something.

Strangely, I am also watching not one, but TWO current TV shows! Gotham and Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Last year I actually watched quite a few things on Netflix. Probably the most TV I've watched since my son was born. (Can't say I'm actually proud of that fact or anything.) After finishing up the newer Battlestar Galactica, I wound up watching Orange is the New Black, Sherlock (LOVED IT!) and watched the first couple (short) seasons of Black Mirror.

How's THAT for a bunch of useless information? :)

Nice to know you are all still here. Feel like I've been spending too much time with just me and my head lately!

message 7928: by Becky (new)

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I have done my fair share of cross-stitch and find it quite enjoyable as long as you are patient. It's not one of those hobbies that gives you instant gratification. I do knitting, too, which is nice and calming. I can do both of those while watching some TV shows or movies. Right now I'm on an Anne of Green Gables kick. I have a scroll frame but have not used it much because I have trouble tying off my thread without being able to see it easily. Maybe I'll try using it again some time.

message 7929: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
No shame in the cross stitch Lloyd! I used to knit for relaxation and sadly have been looking into "adult coloring books" lately to see if that is something I would like. I am a huge Battlestar fan! Fraking loved it. I also loved Sherlock but was sadly not as in love with the last season (still watchable - just not as good IMO). Have you watched The Flash? It is the only new show I love this year so far. I have watched the first few Agent Carter episodes and it is ok so far too. Not as engaging as The Flash yet though. Glad you are back! Whether you read 16 books or 1000 at least you are reading IMO!

p.s. I tried Black Mirror and was so angry after the first episode I did not continue. I was seriously mad watching it - I am not kidding. My husband had to tell me it was just a show and to calm down!

Becky I think you would be absolutely fine reading just Poison Study and IMO you dodged a bullet in only reading Shiver!

p.s. I own Anne of Green Gables & the sequel on DVD and LOVE (seriously LOVE) it! I have watched those DVD's (along with the Colin Firth Pride & Prejudice) multiple times over the years. Meagan Follows will forever be my Anne.

I enjoyed the movie more than the shows.

message 7934: by Becky (new)

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments Heidi, I got all of the Anne TV movies on DVD for Christmas. I just spent all week watching Anne and am amazed at how fantastic Megan Follows is. (I watched these when I was younger but didn't really appreciate the great acting of the cast.) I don't think I've ever watched the Colin Firth version of P&P. I don't think it's on Netflix. Maybe my library has it. And I will have to put in the inter-library loan for Poison Study.

message 7935: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
Becky you MUST watch the Colin Firth version of P&P!!! I own it and know Amazon Prime has it but not Netflix. So happy to find fellow Anne fans! Did you ever watch the show Tales From Avonlea? I just rewatched all the episodes a year or so ago. Hope you like Poison Study.

BECKY: YES! Heidi is totally right! The Colin Firth P&P is my favorite movie adaptation. The Elizabeth in that one is the best!

message 7937: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 110 comments Heidi - that's too funny. When people ask me about Black Mirror, I always comment how the first episode isn't very good, but I enjoyed the rest. Some really interesting and sometimes just creepy and sad episodes.

Glad they episodes got better Lloyd. I was too disgusted to carry on! I have seriously never been so angry after watching a TV show. Ever. It really bothered me. I guess that was the point but I kept seeing the plot holes and the fact that that would NEVER happen (plus his staff would/should have been fired)! I am obviously still mad about it. hahaha

Yeah, I found the plot just too silly to believe. I was disturbed by other episodes too. But just not in the same way. :P

Yay Lynn! It has been really weird for me to see a grown up Megan in recent shows (Longmire, Heartland) because she will always be young Anne to me. I will say I did not love the 3rd Anne movie. It did not follow the books at all. p.s. I loved all the books in the series too.
