Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Sure, will do!

FINISHED!

Wow, that had me hooked!

Okay, so the basic premise is that in a futuristic world, they have figured out a technology to create perfect clones. Parents can elect to have this procedure done to their children, and then the "clones" are stored in a facility, and regularly updated (their brains are like computers) with all the memories of the original. The idea being, that if a child dies, you can have them "replaced."

The MC, Catelyn's older sister, Violet dies of a disease. Their parents are rich (her dad's the mayor) and they have cloned their kids, so Violet is replaced. Catelyn is 12 at the time, and tries to go along with it, but she knows it not really her sister. Everything goes on as normal.

4 years later, and Violet's best friend, Samantha Voss is found dead in the woods and Violet's the prime suspect. The clones have their critics in society, and this proves that the cloning process isn't perfect. Catelyn gets in the middle of a conspiracy with a government agency, and has to find her sister before they do and terminate Violet.

The story was quick moving, I couldn't put it down. What I really appreciated was that it didn't get too in depth with the technology and world building, it was easy to understand. This world was much like our own, except greater tech. The characters were good, although not too well developed, except the two sisters.

The thing I liked best was their relationship, it was so well done. Because in both their heads, they recognized that this new Violet was not really Violet, but an imitation, but they had to both pretend otherwise. So lots of complexity there, plus things get pretty crazy, making them both have to make hard choices.

The next best thing was the conspiracy and all the twists that happened throughout. It wasn't really clear who was the "bad guy" until the end, and even then, it was really the lesser of two evils. Loved that aspect.

Overall, I LOVED this, so my type of book, 5 stars!

The ending sucks but the other 99.9% was pure magic! I have yet to read a Rainbow book that's ending is "just right" IMO but she is so excellent at the whole entire rest of the book that I just love her :)

Ok. Based on that I stand by Brigid's review and will continue to skip it for now. Thanks!

Jenny - whoa, that's a really creepy premise. Sounds cool! I will add that to my TBR list. :)

Ashley - I read like a fourth of Red Rising and gave up because I found it boring and confusing, but a few of my friends have told me that it picks up in the second half ... do you agree with that? I might give it another try (and I'll let you know what I think if I end up finishing it Heidi, haha).

Heidi, thanks for the heads up about all her books ending in crappy ways! I just put fan girl on hold at my library. I was in love with Eleanor and park up till the last 20 pages or so. The characters and story was so relatable to me,but that ending. Gut wrenching and to me didn't feel like a choice the character would make.

Actually I thought the opposite -- I was interested in the beginning and first half, and then once I realized 2/3 of the book was this war game, I got bored by the end.

These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1) by Amie Kaufman This Night So Dark (Starbound, #1.5) by Amie Kaufman

So I just finished reading these two. The latter was just 6 chapters long. So that didn't really feel like a I read anything, but it was interesting. I'll eventually write a review for both of it.

message 7814: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Yeah, the second one was just a short story Bluemoon, I'm sure that's why it was free :)

LOVED both of those books!

I haven't read any of Rainbow's other books yet besides Fangirl, but I really liked that one a lot! :)

message 7817: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Minor | 276 comments I was devastated at the end of Eleanor and Park. But then I read on Rainbow Rowell's Q. & A on Goodreads, when people kept asking her waht Eleanor wrote that the important thing was Eleanor reached out. And that made me feel better. Like maybe it was a start, maybe they could reconnect in some way. Or is that just my wishful thinking? :) I liked the ending for Fangirl. I definitely recommend Fangirl!

message 7818: by [deleted user] (new)

I have read fangirl too, loove it.
I agree and disagree about the ending. I liked the way it ended, but a booktuber(cant remember who) mentioned she wanted fangirl to include another Chapter or two. telling how Cath and is doing the rest of the year, rest of the college years.
I would like that, but am happy With how the book ended too. Pluss carry on, is coming out hopefully we get more fangirl info\scenes then.

See? I told you Rainbow's endings are never just quite perfect but that is ok with me since I always love the rest.

Dixie I was gutted for days after I read E&P. I took the ending the same way you did- that she was reaching out and that is what was important.

Karen’s Library | 574 comments I'm currently reading Golden Son (Red Rising Trilogy, #2) by Pierce Brown on my Nook, Odd Apocalypse (Odd Thomas, #5) by Dean Koontz in print and rereading Monsters of Men (Chaos Walking, #3) by Patrick Ness but this time on audio. Love Nick Podehl as narrator!! I seriously have a crush on him!

And I actually really liked Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown but maybe it's because I'm big on sci fi. Actually, it even feels a bit historical to me with some of the world building emulating ancient Rome or Greece. And Golden Son almost has a Dune feel to it which is one of my all time favorite books! There are so many mixes of genre to this series.

I agree with you, Karen, about Red Rising. It did have a sweeping, ancient feel to it. In some ways, It felt more old than new, in spite of being sci fi.

message 7841: by ILyk (new)

ILyk Tourid (annvalane) Found Golden Son Golden Son exhausting, too political and, frankly, skipped the battle scene because I couldn't figure out some of the sci-fi words -e.g leechcraft. But what an ending with a head in the box! No spoilers... Finished Half-bad Half Bad overnight. Loved it so much, more the writing than the story. Open buddy reads too. 4 pages in the Oathbreaker's Shadow The Oathbreaker's Shadow-sort of a tribal feel to it but I can't get engaged: Slow beginning, anyone picked it yet?
