I need to read Dream Thieves still but almost think I need to re-read book 1 first because I spaced most of it out by now.

message 7502: by Becky (new)

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I am usually a neat freak when it comes to my bookshelves but sadly I have not had time to keep up with them. I do agree that a series should be all paperback or all hardback.

Jenny, let me know what you think of Dark Triumph. I read it awhile ago and thought it was darker than the first one and that the bad guy was well written. Is the last one out yet? I'll have to check that out.

message 7503: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I think it may be Becky! So far loving it, but yes it seems darker. Not always a bad thing, I love it in this series, because it makes if feel more real. It was a dark time in history to be a woman.

I'm looking forward to the last book but I see it doesn't come out until Nov. I thought that the characters in the second book were a bit more developed than the first book. And the bad guy was a real creep. This series also got me interested in some of the history of Europe at that time. I think my high school history teacher skimmed right over the interesting parts.

Since it is getting later in the month I started a poll for Nov. with the 3 nominations. I also realized I already nominated mine before - sorry! https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/3...

message 7506: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie are we only using the 3 nominations for November or are 2 more going to be added?

message 7507: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Taber | 506 comments currently reading Out of the Easy. I'm enjoying it, and I really like her descriptions (poetic and unusual), but her style is a bit too stripped down compared to what I usually like. I'm enjoying characters, but I don't feel connected much to the scenes, if that makes sense. I'm about 120 pages in and really loving it overall though.

Today I'm starting:

The Emperor's Blades (Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne) by Brian Staveley

I've heard good things about it, so I hope it lives up to my expectations!

Just the 3 this time so we would get one picked sooner than later :)

Brigid that one looks interesting but there are quite a few differing reviews on here about it so I will wait to see your thoughts on it.

I started the monthly read Terrier on audiobook this weekend.

message 7511: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Taber | 506 comments I'm also interested in your thoughts, Brigid. I'd love to find a great new epic series.

Kristen have you read Daughter of the Forest Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters, #1) by Juliet Marillier ? That seems like your type of book to me.

message 7513: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I finished Dark Triumph (His Fair Assassin, #2) by Robin LaFevers and I LOVED it so good!

Started The Saints (Quarantine, #2) by Lex Thomas and I'm not enjoying it nearly as much as the first one. All the kids are being major a holes, there isn't a good one in the bunch, and they are mostly partying like crazy. But almost done, going to power through and finish it. I hate not finishing books!

I need to listen to Grave Mercy Jenny - I have the audio at home ready to load onto my phone. I am slacking on it for some reason.

message 7515: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Taber | 506 comments Heidi, no! but you're right. I'm adding that one to my list now :)

message 7516: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
Sweet! If I remember right Brigid also loved it?? Just be warned it has some heavier material so it is not 100% YA in my opinion.

message 7517: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Taber | 506 comments I'm reading it for me, so that doesn't matter, but thanks for the warning. I'll be sure not to recommend it to my sister's kids without reading it first.

Let me know what you think if you read it, Kristen!

The Emperor's Blades is pretty good so far, but I'm taking a break from it because look what I got in the mail today:

The Blood of Olympus (The Heroes of Olympus, #5) by Rick Riordan

So of course, I have to drop everything and read it. :P

LOL! Okay, I'm totally moving this series to my "next" list.

I could not get into the first Percy Jackson book unfortunately. It was a little too middle grade for me. Do the books mature as he ages??

message 7526: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie ahhh the PJO and HOO series are my favorites <3

I'm reading Blood of Olympus right now too Brigid!

Is the Hero's series better than PJ??

message 7528: by Ashley Marie (last edited Oct 16, 2014 07:54AM) (new)

Ashley Marie it's a sequel series for PJO so you'll want to push through them first ;) the series I wouldn't necessarily recommend is the Kane Chronicles, his Egyptian-mythology series. I've only read the first book but it felt more middle-grade than PJO did.

message 7529: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I actually liked the Egyptian series better than Percy. Yes, the Hero's series is better than PJ, but each book in the PJ series gets better and better. HUGE difference between the first and the last. I also am really into mythology, so these books are so fun for me!

message 7530: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Finished The Saints (Quarantine, #2) by Lex Thomas and while the ending was gripping, I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. It did remind me a little of the Gone series by Michael Grant, but not nearly as good unfortunately.

Next is The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1) by Marie Lu

I started the pjo books when I was 17 and its one of my fave series. I say give it a go.
And like Jenny I like the kane chronicles better in some ways. But try them, they are great books.

I would say they do. He's 16 by the end of the series. The first two books are a bit more on the middle grade side, but books 3-5 get darker and more mature––although I'd still say they were still kind of floating between middle grade and YA. Heroes of Olympus is more YA; the characters are older and the books are longer. Some things might be a bit confusing if you hadn't read all the Percy Jackson books, though.

I started reading them when they were fairly new, when I was 12-13 or so, so I think I also just have a strong sentimental attachment to them. But I do still enjoy the new books even though I'm in college now. :D

I pretty much agree with Brigid. The HoO are more YA. I think reading them close together and not having to wait a year for each release would be good, too, since I forgot a lot of details about the various characters.

Same ... There are a ton of characters in HoO and a lot going on in the plot. I re-read the first two books over the summer and that refreshed my memory a bit, but I still have forgotten a lot. :P

message 7536: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie reading Daughters of the Witching Hill by Mary Sharratt The Tone Poet by Mark Rickert

finished Ice Massacre by Tiana Warner last night and loved it!

Let me know what you think. I read the first two and am not sure if I should get the third one.

message 7539: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I finished The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1) by Marie Lu and enjoyed it, gave it 4 stars. Also finished The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater and LOVED that one, 5 stars!

Now reading Monsters of Men (Chaos Walking, #3) by Patrick Ness and flying through it, almost done!

Karen’s Library | 574 comments Jenny, have you read the short stories yet? Are they in the books? I think the new editions have the short stories included but not quite sure. Especially Snowscape (Chaos Walking, #3.5) by Patrick Ness !!!!
