Ashley Marie Lol thanks Heidi! :) I try to not go overboard with them but it's so much fun

I'm probably gonna finish my reread of Order of the Phoenix tonight and (hopefully) start Terrier -- it's sitting on my shelf glaring at me lol

Ashley, I love yours too :)

I went through a shelf phase where I made a bunch of them but then forgot about a lot of them!

Ashley I love Order! It is my favorite in the series.

Mine too :). It's my sister's least favorite, so she's always harassing me about it. She says Harry is too whiny...lol.

no way, it's definitely an angsty book but he's beyond justified. after rereading it I think it's tied for my favorite with Prisoner. I just remember identifying with Harry's angst SO MUCH when I first read it, the whole "nobody understands" thing we all deal with as teenagers (let alone school and exam stress, bleh!!)

Ashley Marie alright ladies, I've gone and made new shelves -- I've already got the read-in-2013 and read-in-2014 shelves but now I've added faves-of for each year xD I have a problem and I know it.

I agree Ashley - his angst is justified! I just love the imagination in that book. JK created so many people, places, and things in that book. So creative!

Wow, your shelves are impressive, Ashley. Are you this methodical and organised at home/work? You have shamed me into thinking I should get my shelves in some kind of order/categories as they have none right now, a bit like the shelves in my brain. Random!

Wendy I too was shamed once into making better shelves. It is a curse I bear. *sigh*

Haha I don't really think so. GR is an addiction, and I often find myself making new shelves when I really doubt I need them -- of the ones I own, my shelves tend to be organized by genre at home. My movies and records are organized alphabetically, but that's about it :)

and at work... well, I sell silverware online for my boyfriend's brother -- our warehouse is organized alphabetically by pattern. So... I suppose so? lol

message 7469: by W.J. (new)

W.J. Lennox | 48 comments Some of your shelf categories made me chuckle, but I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of the, no thanks or didn't finish ones, yikes!

It sounds like you're pretty organised in general. I used to be a lot better, pre-children. I try to keep a semblance of order at home, so I know where everything is, but my boys and hubby like to test me by not putting things back where they should go or move stuff around, which then mysteriously vanishes into a black hole. I have so little time these days that my drawers are overflowing with old bits of paper work/ bills and no, that isn't a euphemism, lol!

My real bookshelves are fairly well organised at least. I've heard of some people taking it one step further, and as well as sorting their books alphabetically, they colour code them. Now, that is beyond anal. Each to their own I guess. If you ever find yourself at a loose end, you're more than welcome to pop across to Scotland and whip me into shape ;-)

message 7470: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Ahhh Wendy I'd love to see Scotland!! my heritage on my dad's side is Irish/Scottish/English/Italian and I've always wanted to see Scotland and Ireland in particular <3

Lol I try not to be too brutal with books -- the craptastic shelf is one to avoid, definitely! And just because a book winds up DNF'd doesn't mean it won't reach the Will-Attempt-Again shelf eventually ;)

I'm so with you. My toddler is actually pretty type-A (I know it's a phase, but fingers crossed it stays ;)), so she puts things away about 50% of the time, but hubby is the worst for organization. I have to redo the cupboards every few months because his philosophy is "If it's in there, I put it away". I can never get him to realize it's so much easier if it goes back in the right spot!

My bookshelves are organized by genre. I used to alphabetize them by author within the genres, but I just don't have time anymore, so they're close enough :).

Ashley Marie Kristen wrote: "My bookshelves are organized by genre. I used to alphabetize them by author within the genres, but I just don't have time anymore, so they're close enough :)."

I've never been able to organize by anything other than what I think "looks good" -- that is, I can't have books of various heights all next to each other, one tall/one short/one medium-sized/and so forth, that just makes me cringe lol

Me too! It's so annoying! I also can't mix up hardcovers and paperbacks (hardcovers in line first, then paperbacks) and series MUST be in number order. If I have a series book that's paperback and the rest are hardcover, I'll buy the hardcover. I might be a little type-a too :).

Hey guys.
Yes, I love elaborate gr shelf names too.I have tons of gr shelfs but I geuss I could always have more.

message 7475: by W.J. (new)

W.J. Lennox | 48 comments Kristen - My oldest used to be like that too, and would spend ages lining up his toys or putting them back in the box when he'd finished. He's very analytical in his head, but a total space cadet in real life. No amount of nagging has made the slightest difference over the years and I'm still picking up behind him, gah! My youngest, who sees himself as a budding engineer is a right hoarder, and I'm forever finding bits of wire, screws and old batteries or sucking his Lego pieces up the hoover. I think you'll find it easier with girls.

I agree about books of varying sizes, like you I do have to have them arranged as much as possible by height and genre, but that's as far as my organisation goes.

Ashley - I'm sure you'd love Scotland if you ever get the chance to visit in the future. Tons to see and do, beautiful scenery, and despite our wildling reputation, we're really a friendly bunch, lol! Just make sure you bring clothes for all weather.

After I spoke to you earlier, the universe must have heard me and decided to have a laugh at my expense. A bag of lentils has just exploded all over my kitchen worktop and floor, after I opened it earlier to make soup and shoved it back in a hurry, obviously precariously balanced. It seems my bookshelves aren't the only shelves that need organising, groan!

You have a lot of the same books I do...and the same cats. My tortie just passed away in August (18 years old), but my other cat is a black one who looks so much like yours it's uncanny :). And I love that you have the British covers for HP. I thought those were so much better than the US ones (though I also see you have both).

Cats are the best <3 we had to have the mama put down a month or so after she gave birth, there was a complication after the pregnancy... but Slick looks just like she did <3

I'm dying to get the new HP series where the spines make the castle :D I'm such a nerd for HP. everyone's like "Why do you need 3 editions of the same books??" ....why not??

This conversation is cracking me up. I am hyper vigilant when it comes to my actual book shelves. I have been known to pause a tv show or two because I've looked up and thought a book looked out of place and it drove me batty.

I think I'm safe for a few years (knock on wood) -- Waylon (the black one) is 3 and the girls are both 2.

I was gonna say Heidi, I don't think cats and shelves constitute "what we're currently reading", but I could be wrong ;)

Well....we're, um, reading each other's fascinating posts? My black cat is 15, too, and I say the same thing, Heidi. It broke my heart to lose Myrtle.

I'd love to put the train back on the tracks, but I'm writing right now, so not reading anything, unfortunately. I have several books I promised I'd read for other authors, but I'm only a few chapters in on each. If there were a spell to add hours to a day, I'd be most grateful!

message 7484: by W.J. (new)

W.J. Lennox | 48 comments Oops, will try to not go off at a tangent after this.

Ashley - very neat shelves and I see quite a few that sit on my shelves. Obviously my HP series is the British version, but I don't have the hard back copies. They look fab. Had a look at your profile, we spookily like a lot of same things.

I'm with the rest of you cat loving ladies, maybe I'll give in and get another one day to replace my sadly missed, Merlin.

Flavia was quite precocious from what I remember. A ton of others thought she was charming but there are still quite a few people like me that were turned off by her quirkiness. That is the great thing about books - everyone has a different reaction :)

I hope to start that by the end of the week Ashley! I am excited by the description of the book because it sounds like a mix between YA, mystery, and urban fantasy. Very intriguing.

Ashley Marie I'd have to call it high fantasy because it's a prequel to Tammy's other high fantasy series(es) but otherwise yes!

Raging Star (Dust Lands, #3) by Moira Young The Ask and the Answer (Chaos Walking, #2) by Patrick Ness The Assassin's Blade (Throne of Glass, #0.1-0.5) by Sarah J. Maas

All good reads: Raging Star was better than I expected it to be, and the ending was just crazy good! The other two were definite 5 star reads!

Now reading Dark Triumph (His Fair Assassin, #2) by Robin LaFevers and The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater
