I was 2/3 of the way through it (Throne of Glass) but had to return it to the library because someone else put a hold on it. I'm hoping to get it out again to finish it. I guess my busy schedule is not leaving me enough time to read.

Karen’s Library | 574 comments I just bought Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas for $.99. I haven't been able to get into it yet. But for 99 cents, there may be a day when I'll be in the mood and give it a try again. :) All my GR friends rave about it!!

Yeah that's not a bad price for the book when some retailers sell it for more. I hope you have the heart for it, because, and this is just my opinion, the books is really good. I love badass herons who know how to fight

I just listened to Misty of Chincoteague Misty of Chincoteague (Misty, #1) by Marguerite Henry based on some recommendations on here (forgot who told me to read it??) and thought it was a really good elementary grade read.

message 7359: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Finished Mistress of Rome (The Empress of Rome, #1) by Kate Quinn last night and luuurrrved it. Ancient Rome is so intricate and dangerous -- ancient Egypt will always hold the spot of favoritism in my heart but mannnn Rome. Now I feel the need to go track down the HBO show xD

onward to either Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor or Fool Moon (The Dresden Files #2) by Jim Butcher depending on my mood when I get home :)

As far as I can tell, ROME the tv show wasn't based on any book in particular, just history. But if you're interested, I would definitely recommend Mistress and Cleopatra's Daughter Heidi!

Oooo I loved it. Typical HBO -- overly sexual and violent but the acting and writing is way above average IMO

I was enjoying it but not heartbroken that I had to return it. I read some of the reviews for the next book and it's supposed to be even better, so I do believe I will stick with this series. Just need to find more time to read.

Yeah I heard the second book is better than the first

Ashley Marie picked up Fool Moon last night. Something about the dialogue and verb use feels off, but I have it on good authority the books get better around 3 and 4, so I'm gonna power through this one.

I have the first few to read - bought them when they were on sale. I plan to listen to them but have been warned that the first book in the series is the worst (kind of like Kate Daniels).

Ok Oda! I just checked - I do no own that book BUT I just joined Kindle Unlimited yesterday because I wanted the 3 free Audible credits that comes with it (yes I am a shameless audiobook junkie) and it is free to read or listen to the audiobook of that particular book with Kindle Unlimited so it is good timing that you mentioned it!

Well I'm still trying to finish up a couple of things I started reading over the summer ... I've just been awful at finishing things (and reading in general) lately. But mostly I've been focusing on:

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell

It's a little hard to follow but I like it so far!

Looking for Alaska was not one of my favorite Green books. I did not attach to any of the characters.

Yup. Felt the same way Darren. I must prefer Will Grayson Will Grayson and The Fault in Our Stars. I had a similar issue with Paper Towns. Margo was such a B that I could not get behind a search for her!

I just started Return to Me Return to Me by Justina Chen

Ashley Marie I've got Paper Towns, Alaska and Katherines all on my TBR list. TFIOS was good but wayyyy overhyped.

Ashley my favorite Green is Will Grayson - I just loved it! I read TFIOS right when it came out so did not get that overhype thing but could totally see that if I would have read it later. A similar subject book to TFIOS that I much prefered was A Monster Calls.

A Monster Calls is amazing! I think I still prefer Chaos Walking but both are fantastic. I agree with you about John Green, Heidi ... Will Grayson and TFiOS are also my favorites (I also read TFiOS before it was way overhyped which was a good choice, haha). I wasn't a big fan of Looking For Alaska or Paper Towns ... they're both basically "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" plots which always annoy me.

I wound up getting the audio book set on Amazon Deal a Day for John Green a few months ago (don't be shocked; I haven't gotten to it yet), which includes TFiOS, Paper Towns, Looking for Alaska, and An Abundance of Katherines. I was kind of looking forward to Paper Towns until now :P. Especially after I'd read he won the EAP Award and they're making a movie.

Well, Paper Towns isn't bad or anything ... I just thought it was okay, but it had its good parts. I also think maybe I would've liked it more if I'd read it before Looking for Alaska (because they're kind of the same book, haha). Then again I know a lot of people who love it.

Kristen I still think Paper Towns is worth the read/listen - if only for the "drunken nerds" part. That scene cracked me up!

Well Heidi, have to agree with you about the second half of DOS&B There were a few schmaltzy chapters in the middle that bordered on Twilight territory, which I felt could have been left out altogether. It's something that bugs me a lot about some YA books, that the female protagonist starts out strong and gutsy, but the minute she falls head over heels with the dark, angsty hero, she goes all doe-eyed. I'm not saying there shouldn't be romance, but I don't think it should become the main focus of a story. Still, I'm old and jaded and not the target audience, so I'm probably in the minority there.

As someone who reads and writes fantasy, I loved the mythology & back story in some of the later chapters, although it was a little disjointed in places. Overall DOS&B was a great read, but the quality of Laini Taylor's writing was the stand out factor for me. I will definitely be reading more from this talented author.

I agree wholeheartedly about her writing skills -- she had me drooling over her sentence construction half the time, it was so poetic and vivid.

message 7400: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie just finished Nest by Esther Ehrlich and Grimm Fairy Tales Robyn Hood Legend by Patrick Shand last night, both ARCs from NetGalley and both great reads, particularly Nest -- I was NOT expecting something so dark and emotional from a middle-grade book.

Fool Moon (The Dresden Files #2) by Jim Butcher is getting really good, I didn't want to put it down last night!

and I'm back on track with A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, #4) by George R.R. Martin audiobook :3
