Yesterday I also finished:

This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald

And now I am re-reading:

I think I remember you not liking it Brigid so I did not look into it much.

Ashley Marie ohhhh Raven Boys, excellent :D I'm psyched for the third book to come out!

@Heidi - Yeah I don't think you'd enjoy it ... It had an interesting premise but then had an insta-love romance which then took up a majority of the second half of the book. :P

@Ashley - Me too! *screams* I'm re-reading the first two because I want to refresh my memory. But also there were a few things I was confused about and I wanted to go back and see if things were a bit clearer knowing the plot twists all along and whatnot ... and I think it's less confusing reading it a second time. ;) It also helps that I'm much more familiar with the characters now and I don't get them mixed up as much as the first time, haha.

HEIDI: I guess you can say its post-apocalyptic. There was a virus that infect the whole world. When you die your body gets "rebooted", but now your stronger, faster, leaner and basically a fighting machine. The downside is the longer you're dead the less human you are. The government used this to their advantage making the teens into fighting machines, but they kill the adults because they are less likely to take orders.

The whole book is about Wren, the longest reboot, and Callum the shortest reboot and their relationship and growing attraction. They also start to fight the system because of humanitarian issues? I haven't gotten around to that part yet.

As for me liking it, its ok. Its actually not what I thought it would be. I thought this book would be more like Cinder rather than a zombie type of book, cause that's what the reboots are, technically.

I haven't yet, Heidi. I'm still listening to Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee and although I love this book, not so much the narrator.

I'll still give Timebound (The Chronos Files, #1) by Rysa Walker a try though. The novella Time's Echo (The Chronos Files, #1.5) by Rysa Walker was amazing because of Nick Podehl.

Yay Karen (for the ATW book) :) I had heard the Angelfall narrator kind of ruined that book so I am sticking with print for that series. It is a shame because it just goes to show how a narrator can sometimes make or break a book. I am interested in your thoughts on the Timebound narrator. I don't want to say anything yet in an effort not to steer you one way or the other. I am on disk 4 out of 10 and the story itself is keeping me entertained :)

Brigid I still wonder if I would have had a different reaction to Raven Boys had I known while reading it that it was part of a series. I was expecting everything to get wrapped up and kept getting more questions and was getting irritated! hahaha

message 7213: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie @Karen I had to stop listening to Angelfall on audiobook because I couldn't take her seriously when she did the angel's voice, it was too much "girl who thinks she's Castiel" kind of thing and instead of listening I wound up either rolling my eyes or cackling. Need to pick it up from the library and finish it.

message 7214: by Heidi (new)

Ashley if you have not read Angelfall please do not judge it by the audiobook! It is awesome in print (or kindle as I read it :)

Yeah I think I might have read it thinking it was a standalone too? I don't remember, haha. But as I said, I think it's a little less confusing reading it a second time. I don't remember if you've read the second book or not ... It explains a few things but there's still a lot still left to be explained/resolved. There are still two books left in the series, though. :)

Ashley Marie really intrigued by Lewis' The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis . I'm about halfway through and this feels like a book I ought to finish by the end of the night (or else wrap it up tomorrow) -- the style and wording make it feel like an essay. Definitely not something I'd recommend for light reading, but it is short (209 pages) so it tends to go quickly.

ODA: There are people who doesn't find Dan Brown books entertaining.

Just finished the book. Love it! I think its second to Da Vinci's Code.

I read Da Vinci Code and found it entertaining but he is not what I consider a "good writer" more of an entertaining writer if that makes sense.

I agree. Kind of like Diana Garibaldi in my eyes, as far as skill level goes, though I can't get through any of her books. I actually enjoyed Angels and Demons better than the Da Vinci Code, though.

message 7235: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I read Da Vinci Code first and Angels and Demons second, and that's the order I like them in too -- not sure if it would be different had I read them in proper order or not. Not sure the movies did them any favors though.

Karen’s Library | 574 comments Speaking of Diana Garibaldi and libraries, I just put Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon on hold at my elibrary. Since the series is about to start on Starz or Showtime (or whichever channel), I know I'll watch it, so thought I'd finally read the book.

Karen! You must listen to Outlander if you can. Davina Porter is one of my favorite narrators. I personally thought the book could have been edited down about 200 pages or so because it went on and on at times but Davina's narration helped me get through it.

*squee* Loved the Veronica Mars book! I am excited for more. I listened to it on audio narrated by K Bell herself and she was awesome as always!

message 7244: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Taber | 506 comments Heidi, totally agree on the editing for that book. at one point I even wondered if she had an editor when the repetitive inner dialogue droned on :). I also hated (as in threw the book across the room halfway through and never returned to it) the character development and well, other things I won't go into because of spoilers. I'll say I know I'm in the minority, but I'm not a fan of her as strongly as I'm not a fan of Meyers.
I'm glad the audio made it better! A friend who also hates the book told me the show is supposed to be better. I can't remember if it's already started yet or not. my friend also said I need to watch the Thrones series, but I also couldn't get into his books, so I'm debating.

Kristen I did not really like Outlander either. I gave it 3 stars but that was generous. IMO Outlander has that same appeal as Twilight and Fifty Shades -- I think women fall in love with the men in the books (Jamie I could understand but the other two guys NO WAY) and it helps them overlook issues with the books themselves and become major fan girls of the books. I could be wrong. If by Meyers you are referring to Stephanie then don't even get me started on her. It upsets me when there are such talented unknown writers out there that don't need an editor and a thesaurus as she clearly does yet she is a millionaire. I know I should he happy people are reading in general and I try to focus on that but some days it doesn't work! hahahaha

Have you watched the series?? If not I recommend you watch the series and the movie before you read the book. There are a lot of inside jokes/info.

Of course I mean her (Meyers)...lol. But that's a whole other thread entirely! Much like the heroes in Twilight and 50 Shades, I really don't get how women drool over these men. I suppose having seen far too many abusive relationships, I can't really stomach turning these monsters into prizes. And even Jamie falls under that category for me (you know that one scene they tried to "justify" as historically accurate and DG dismissed as "deserved"? Yeah...totally a d-bag for me after that :p).

As to Veronica Mars, no, I haven't seen the series yet, but I do plan on starting there. I promised myself no new TV series until the first draft of at least the next book is done (I tend to binge-watch), so I'm waiting on it...but I'm getting really excited to see/read it!
