Hmm I haven't heard of that one Heidi, but it looks interesting ... Seems to be getting mixed reviews, although it looks like the reviewers I usually agree with have liked it a lot.

Yeah that is my problem - not a lot of my GR friends have read it. I know it is only $2 so not too bad even if it is bad.

That's true! $2 is a good deal, haha. I think I may give it a shot...

Anyone have any "hidden gem" YA books that they loved and nearly no one they know has read to nominate for May?? If so please head over to the May thread to let us know!

I just nominated a couple, and I love the one you rec'd. I'm definitely reading that one at some point.

It's a fun series. More middle school than YA. I found the series enjoyable so far.

You know, I listened to Cinder and Scarlet and began Cress - but I have to say that I'm switching back to print. The narrator is ok, good accents and character voices, but her voice for Eiko (sp?) the computer drives me a little nuts. For me - this is a series I need to do in print.

message 6717: by Karen’s Library (new)

Karen’s Library | 574 comments I did the first two books in print and THEN listened in audio. I have Cress on ebook too so I can switch if I need to. But I did really love listening to the first two.

Nearly done with Cress and while I can't wait to get to the end I almost don't want it to end! I am in love with it. Just started the non YA The Perfect Match The Perfect Match (Blue Heron, #2) by Kristan Higgins . I really really like her books. They make me happy.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I'm holding off on the Lunar Chronicles until they all come out. I guess I'm just not a patient person when it comes to waiting for a sequel to be published.

I'll have to check out A&D.

message 6726: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Taber | 506 comments I'm reading A&D currently. I love it, but I do have some style gripes with repetitive words (like in one page, I think his characters smiled 5 or 6 times). It's a small gripe though. His imagery is amazing. I want to quote something nearly every paragraph.

message 6727: by Heidi (new)

Oh Becky! You are missing out. Come on - there are three books out already!

Kristen I am enjoying A & D. I normally hate when authors use the same words or descriptors. The best part about listening to it on audiobook is that I don't notice the repetitive words as much. That is the only way I ever got through Twilight because that book repeated sooooooo many words that in print I wanted to hurt someone while trying to read it in print.

I have David. I told you that you would like it! I never went on with the rest of the series though for some reason. I think even those who did not like Hunger Games would still enjoy her earlier series.

My sister's kids (6, 7, and 8) really enjoyed the series. They're picky readers, so I figure that's a good endorsement.

message 6735: by Ashley Marie (last edited Apr 18, 2014 06:07AM) (new)

Ashley Marie I just zipped through the Hunger Games trilogy in about 3-4 days and it's my new favorite series.

I decided to tackle A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin earlier this week. I've got all the books in paperback at home but I've started listening to the audiobook while I'm at work so I can continue to be productive and it seems to be working out quite well! I adore Arya and Bran and I neeeeeeeed a direwolf you guys.

still plugging away at The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater as well.

Yeah, I get what you mean. I did love the writing and thought it was really beautiful for the most part, but there was also some repetitive parts ... One thing that kind of bothered me was that in the dialogue, the characters address each other by name too much ... ? It sounds like a weird thing to complain about but I just noticed there were conversations that would be like:

"Blah blah, Dante."
"Blah blah, Ari."
"Blah blah, Dante."

And it felt kind of unnatural. But yeah ... really that's my only complaint about the book. It was one of my favorite things I've read in a long time. :)

Exactly :). It's definitely not enough to detract from the book, and honestly, I doubt it's something anyone else will notice. Writers tend to be taught to hone in on these things in order to edit well, and I think we get hypersensitive to them. I know I'm guilty of it.

I just figure I'll read them back to back to back to back.....then I won't have to refresh myself or anything. Dystopians aren't my favorite genre anyway and I dislike cliffhangers. I'm just an oddball in the YA world but I've accepted it.

So I really need to finish Underdogs and The Miseducation of Cameron Post because I've been reading them both for like three weeks. So I'm hoping to finish both this weekend.

Buuut I also started:

How to Train Your Dragon (How to Train Your Dragon, #1) by Cressida Cowell

Because firstly, I love the movie and feel bad for having never read the books. Secondly, the books are really short and I'm trying to catch up on my reading goal ... shhh. :P

Just finished reading...
The Hunt For Atlantis (Nina Wilde & Eddie Chase, #1) by Andy McDermott

I really had high hopes for this book. Its not so bad, but I've read better action-adventure books.

Cool! You were right, as usual :) The fact that I was sad when (view spoiler) tells you something about how well done the book was :)
