Andrea Dutton | 10 comments Just started Heart of Stone A Novel (Irish Angel Series) by Jill Marie Landis . It was a Kindle freebie so I took a chance.

message 502: by Clare K. R. (new)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) I just started Persuasion. So far I like it less than S&S and P&P, but more than Emma... though it would be hard for me to like a book less than Emma.

message 503: by Miriam (last edited Feb 09, 2011 09:08PM) (new)

Miriam Huh. Austen must be in the air. On another forum (not GoodReads) they were discussing Austen as well. A few people confessed to not getting her. Persuasion was a favorite there though. I haven't read it, I'm just familiar with the BBC production of it, which I loved.

I'm reading The Mezzanine, and still trying to decide how I feel about reading a 100 pages or so about tying shoes and using plastic straws. Also interesting to see how dated it is. I wonder what readers, 20 years younger than me would think of it.

message 504: by Judy (new)

Judy (judy5cents) | 12 comments I just finished How To Sleep Alone in a king-Size Bed, A Memoir of Staring Over by Theo Pauline Nestor, and I really enjoyed it. It's an unflinching, realistic memoir of just how difficult it is to end a marriage and start over.

message 505: by Cliff (new)

Cliff Ball (cliffball) | 92 comments I just started Falling Star by Philip Chen.

message 506: by Yassemin (new)

Yassemin (yas666) | 23 comments Reading a free lad lit kind of book which isn't my usual cup of tea but I really like so far! William Walker's First Year of Marriage: A Horror Story. I'm glad amazon produce free books, helps me learn about genres I may not have given a chance other wise. Draw the line at paranormal though, no offence anyone!

message 507: by Tamsen (new)

Tamsen Clare - we started a Jane Austen Book Club (yes like the movie) and after we finished her reads, we went on to the classics. I actually really liked Emma - that, P&P, S&S - those were my favorites. Mansfield Park was, imho, the worst! Fanny Price was just ugh.

I am new to the Kindle experience, but I have gotten a bunch of free books, and am on a Dickens kick. Just finished Oliver Twist, and will be starting on another soon... I just joined the Kindle Lending group here on GR, looking forward to sharing and receiving more books!

I'm working my way through "The Wave", a light documentary style about surfing, wave science and sea sickness.

message 509: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (bookfairy76) I'm currently reading "Switched" Switched (Trylle Trilogy, #1) by Amanda Hocking

message 510: by Scott (new)

Scott Collins | 17 comments Just downloaded Three Sisters. I don't know what it is about Helen's writing, but it just sucks me in. It's almost like reading someone's diary.

message 511: by Yassemin (new)

Yassemin (yas666) | 23 comments That sounds promising Scott, might have to pick that one up myself.

message 512: by Scott (new)

Scott Collins | 17 comments Finished it up. Can't wait for more!

message 513: by [deleted user] (new)

I am reading Interview With the Vampire and also The Great Hunt on the Kindle right now. I'm thinking about starting something classic next, but I'm not totally sure. The Kindle does not help me keep my 'read multiple things at once' tendencies in check at all...

Aw, poor old Fanny Price! I can understand why you didn't warm to her - she doesn't have the sparkle of other Austen heroines - but I think Austen does a good job of conveying her sense of oppression. This is a young woman who is absolutely powerless and utterly dependant - all those headaches etc are obviously physical manifestations of her distress. If I was getting carried away I might say that 'Mansfield Park' is a rallying cry for feminism. Look at the terrible fates that most of the women meet - any who dare stray from the path end up in ignominy. Fanny only gets her happy ending after years of abnegating her own needs. Chilling stuff!

Okay, I'll stop ranting now :-)

message 515: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelah110) | 82 comments I just finished Crave
I am now reading Bloodfever
I used to be a "Literary snob" being really particular about what I read. The Kindle has me reading books I never thought I would like.

message 516: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) I just finished reading The Book by M. Clifford on my Kindle. As much as I love my Kindle, I have to say that I looked at it a bit differently after that book. lol. Now I'm reading Dracula, The Undead Dracula the Un-Dead by Dacre Stoker by Dacre Stokre and Ian Holt.

Grace Elliot (httpwwwgoodreadscomgraceelliot) | 34 comments Just finished Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon and moving onto by Lisa Kleyplas. Keeping the HR nicely topped up. Devil in Winter (Wallflowers, #3) by Lisa Kleypas

message 526: by Andrea (last edited Feb 16, 2011 10:53AM) (new)

Andrea Dutton | 10 comments Grace... is Outlander good? I have seen it mentioned in several threads and have thought about reading it. How would you sum it up? Is it easy to follow?

message 527: by Judy (new)

Judy (judy5cents) | 12 comments The Autobiography of Mark Twain.. And I now see one advantage of paper books. I would have preferred to skip over the long scholoarly description (with footnotes!) on Twains efforts to write it, but I couldn't tell when it ended.

message 528: by mookie (new)

mookie kong (ultramookie) i'm reading The Road.

message 529: by 4cats (new)

4cats (fourcats) am reading and enjoying The Ghost and Mrs. McClure (Haunted Bookshop, #1) by Alice Kimberly

message 530: by Chester (new)

Chester | 29 comments I just finished Michael Connelly's THE CLOSERS. It's one of his Harry Bosch series that came out a few years ago. Harry has just returned to the LAPD after three years of retirement. He's assigned to the cold case unit euphemistically called Open-Unsolved. His investigation of the nearly twenty-year-old murder of a teenage girl involves racial tensions and problems in the police department. Excellent as usual for Connelly.

message 531: by Steve (new)

Steve Anderson | 60 comments Just finished True Grit. Great story and characters and so well written. Highly recommended -- it definitely lives up to its reputation.

message 532: by Miriam (last edited Feb 18, 2011 07:50AM) (new)

Miriam I'm almost finished reading Through Black Spruce. I wish Boyden was better at creating distinct voices, particularly since he's written two books that alternates narratives, but other than that I'm really enjoying the book. Will's a great character.

Next is a bunch of dead tree books.

message 533: by Arthur (new)

Arthur | 7 comments I'm reading Cliff Burns' mystery

Love his writing. Dark. Somewhat supernatural. Very mysterious.

message 534: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 6 comments I'm reading Carrion Comfrort by Dan Simmons. It's a great book so far, but I feel that I need my full attention focused on it when reading it.

message 535: by Anita (new)

Anita I just started reading Easily Amused by Karen McQuestion, I loved A Shattered Life, so I'm anxious to read another by her.

I really loved Outlander (#1) so I kept on with the series, I'm currently bogged down with drums of Autumn (#4) and am finding it a lot of "same old same old".

Laura Leblanc | 6 comments Andrea wrote: "Grace... is Outlander good? I have seen it mentioned in several threads and have thought about reading it. How would you sum it up? Is it easy to follow?"

Laura, I'm on book 5 now, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, and I'm reading it in between other books. I loved the first 2 books in this series because of the love scenes with Jamie and Claire, but all this history stuff is getting to me. I'm going to finish them all, but I'm not loving this one as much as the first ones.

I love this series. It takes the author 2-3 years for each book because of all the research involved.
