You may like to read my interview with Curtis E. LeMay in "Above the Reich" and he did not hold much back regarding Cuba, and what he told JFK.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19981 comments We have a number of new members to the group, and I have been a bit forgetful in sending out welcome messages. So, my apologies to all those new group members who I have failed to welcome, the issue has just been rectified with multiple messages of welcome being sent out.

Rebekah Pierce | 3 comments Hi there!

My name is Rebekah, and I live in Utah! I have long cultivated an interest in WWII and recently graduated from Arizona State University with a Master's Degree in WWII Studies! Now that I have time to read more than textbooks and PDFs, I have enjoyed reading for pleasure again... but I miss my WWII content. I found this group and have loved "lurking" so far. I ordered Never Forget Your Name and look forward to reading it. Are future books released a month at a time, or is there a list somewhere? Either way is okay, I listen to a lot of audiobooks, so when I finish one, it's nice to have something on deck that I can discuss with others.

I look forward to my association with this group and my exposure to the MANY books about the subject we all love.

You seem to be the Chief... do you pick the featured books? Or are those posted at the top just your read for the month? If they are meant as discussion books, have you picked one for February? When do you typically post the next month's book?

You guys aren't kidding... since joining this group two weeks ago I have added three physical books to my shelves and five virtual ones... not to mention more Audible editions than I care to share in print.

Steven Harbin (stevenharbin) | 1 comments Good morning everyone. I have been a lurking member of this group for some time, but I don't remember that I've ever introduced myself. Steve Harbin, former HS history teacher, interested in all facets of WW II, especially the last year of the war and it's aftermath, 1945 and 1946.
Right now, I've reading The Last 100 Days and also Year Zero: A History of 1945.
Looking forward to trying to find the time to be more active in the group.
Best wishes to all,

Owen Neumayer | 3 comments Hello, everyone. I am Owen Neumayer, a 19 year old U.S. Culture and Business Practices student at the University of Kentucky. I have recently been propelled into the world of reading and have found great interest in the WWII genre. I just finished Citizen Soldiers by Stephen Ambrose and would appreciate suggestions of other similar books relating to ETO (other recent reads of mine include Band of Brothers, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Schindler's List). Also, I am a member of a fraternity on campus here at UK, and have recently begun a book club for my chapter. Any book recommendations for the club are welcomed and appreciated. I look forward to continue reading WWII books and to see the limits of this wonderful app. I would like to personally thank all of you for showing such dedication and appreciation for reading and WWII. And lastly , I would like to thank all of the veterans within this group for your sacrifices. I truly wish I could thank all of you to your faces, but this will have to suffice. I hope you are all having a great week and are enjoying your current read, thanks everyone!

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19981 comments Hi Owen and welcome to the group, glad you managed to find us. In regard to some reading recommendations for books covering the ETO, I would highly recommend the recent trilogy by Peter Caddick-Adams:

"Sand & Steel: The D-Day Invasions and the Liberation of France"
"Snow and Steel: The Battle of the Bulge, 1944-45"
"Fire and Steel: The End of World War Two in the West"

Also, James Holland has completed two books in his trilogy "The War in the West:

https://www.goodreads.com/series/2027...

Plus of course the final book by Rick Atkison in his World War II Liberation Trilogy; " The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945".

The Guns at Last Light The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945 (World War II Liberation Trilogy, #3) by Rick Atkinson The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945 by Rick Atkinson

Mike | 3592 comments Welcome to the group Owen.

message 4727: by Marc (new)

Marc | 1746 comments Welcome aboard, Owen.

I second Aussie Rick's recommendations of the Caddick-Adams and Atkinson's trilogies. I've read the Atkinson trilogy and found it to be excellent, and I'm currently about halfway through the first volume of Caddick-Adams' trilogy--a great read so far.

Authors to check out (IMO) would be Sir Max Hastings, James Holland, Martin Middlebrook, Adam Makos, Alex Kershaw, Craig Symonds, James Hornfischer, John McManus, Eric Hammel, Ian Toll and James Hallas.

Several of the authors I mentioned write mostly about the fighting in the Pacific, with Hornfischer's books being some of the very best books on naval warfare I've ever read. I could definitely recommend dozens of books on a variety of topics, but I think I've given you enough to digest for the time being. Do not hesitate to ask for information or recommendations from the group, just be warned you may get more than you can handle!

Happy reading!

Owen Neumayer | 3 comments Thank you all for the recommendations, happy reading.

Lawrence Myers | 83 comments Hello Owen, welcome to the group.
In addition to the books and authors already mentioned, I recommend Holland's "Brothers In Arms" an excellent account of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry from D-Day to V-E Day. Enjoy.

message 4730: by Toney (new)

Toney Baus | 2 comments Hi.

I'm a history buff.

I wrote a painfully boring MA thesis on George Orwell that discussed his WW II writings, among other things.

Has anyone read his "The Lion and the Unicorn?"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lio...

message 4731: by Simon (new)

Simon Alford | 188 comments Yes, I have a copy.

The Lion and the Unicorn was written in London during the worst period of the blitz. It is vintage Orwell, a dynamic outline of his belief in socialism, patriotism and an English revolution. His fullest political statement, it has been described as 'one of the most moving and incisive portraits of the English character' and is as relevant now as it ever has been.

Yes, my thesis may be as dull as dishwater, but reading all that Orwell was great. It seems he was one of several socialists disappointed (horrified, really, after Spain) by Soviet communism and looking for a different path.

I wonder if any Labor politicians are looking at it now?

Also, have you read "Pegasus Bridge?"

message 4740: by Gavin (new)

Gavin O'Brien | 2 comments Hi all. My name is Gavin and I hail from the emerald Isle. I am primarily an Ancient History man but World War Two is my second topic of choice. Typically I have focused on the German aspects of world war two, everyhting from society to the military but I am gradually expanding to more nuanced area's, for instance, looking at the role of Ireland in War Two. 'Neutral Shores' is a great book on that subject and I would also like to read more on the battle of the Atlantic. At the risk of rambling on I will say thanks for letting me in and cant wait to see some of the topics that come up here :)

Joe | 1 comments Hi all,

Sorry to delay introducing myself. I’m new to Goodreads and just getting the hang of things. I read and listen to a lot of audiobooks as I travel quite a lot for work (plus the wife doesn’t like the light on at night).

I was hoping to find some suggestions for WWII novels fiction or nonfiction that are similar to “Band of Brothers”. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Joe 🙂
