Blitzkreig was the first War game I ever purchased - many hours spent playing those games

Hey all. My name is Patrick, and I was psyched to find this group on Goodreads. I got into WWII history through a computer game I played when I was 12. I am visually impaired, and I was playing a game for the blind called Panzers in North Africa. It was a role-playing tank game, and its creators were well versed in the military history of that time period. The Tiger tank was near invincible, the Shermans were "guaranteed to like the first time," etc.So, I read a bunch about tank history, and then expanded out from there. My dad is also into military history, and filled me in on the aviation side of the war.
I will try to keep up with the group as best I can. I have a one-year-old, and she keeps things pretty busy. But, I feel confident that I will be able to join the discussion on aviation this coming month.

Hi Everyone,My name's Will, and I write Historical Short Fiction and I'm a big fan of history in general. I also, as it happens, primarily read alternate history in my spare time. Another member, Jeff Dawson, recommended I join, so here I am :D
Hi Will and welcome to the group, I hope you find a few things of interest here to keep you going for a while.

Hi Patrick and William you are both very welcome and please feel free to join in and keep the threads moving along :)
My name is Robert, and I'm a Goodreads author as well as a voracious reader. World War II is of great interest and I look forward to our discussions.
Hi Robert and welcome to the group, I am sure you will have lots to offer in regards to the many discussions here.
Hi Everyone. I have a love and admiration for the Greatest Generation and will read almost anything WWII related. I have traveled to many WWII battle sites in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany with my dear friend and mentor who was a WWII pilot (now 89 years young). I look forward to the group and the book recommendations.
Good to see you here Steve, I am sure you will have lots to offer in the many threads & discussions.
Hello All! I'm Kelby and live in Kentucky. I love reading WWII books along with historical fiction and just a little bit of everything.Looking for good/light/thrilling reading in the WWII whatever genre of book you call the one below....I have a 7 month old...it's kinda hard to read anything of length! Great to be on here.
King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa
Hi Kelby and welcome to the group. I am sure that you will find quite a few good book recommendations once you start browsing a few of the threads here :)

I love a lot of the books I have seen through the threads, but sometimes have a hard time acquiring the books without spending an arm and a leg. How does everyone else do it?

Most of us don't have the book budget (or room in our homes) of our esteemed moderator :)
In my case I get most of mine at the local library. Normally, even if the book is not in their collection, they can get it for you on an InterLibray Loan.
Kelby wrote: " I love a lot of the books I have seen through the threads, but sometimes have a hard time acquiring the books without spending an arm and a leg. How does everyone else do it? "many of us are in bookaholics anonymous,
a 12 step program, though to date, no one
has made it past step 3.
Hahaha Carl! I don't think I even made it to step 2. Kelby,
I peruse the second hand bookstores. For some reason that I can't comprehend, people seem to donate/trade in lots of history books. I just grabbed a cache today, about five books for about five bucks. Also, my library is connected with several others so most of these books are at least one of them, like Happy said, Inter Library Loans are the way to go. If a book looks super fantastic, I hit amazon and see if I can get it used. Good luck!! It takes patience! I grabbed Robert Leckie's Helmet For My Pillow for $1. I've been wanting that one for a while. :-)

Welcome Robert, Steve and Kelby. It's great you all joined us and please feel free to join in as you want.As for Kelby's question it's like Carl says...Hi my name's Geevee and I'm a bookaholic ;)
Hi, I'm a history buff who has read several books on WWII. I am currently reading "The Wages of Destruction" by Adam Tooze which I believe is a fundamental reevaluation of the war. I have also come to question the view that WWII was "The Good War," so I have a bit of a contrarian streak. I'm glad to be a part of this group.
Hi Dan and welcome to the group. Always good to hear other points of view so I look forward to chatting with you more soon.
Dan wrote: "I have also come to question the view that WWII was "The Good War," so I have a bit of a contrarian streak."Only a bit? Well, we Finns usually are very contrarian when it comes to WWII (as seen in every discussion forum that even mentions Finland and WWII) and I personally am in everything, so it'll be interesting to hear your opinions. By the way, I don't think I've ever heard it referred as "good" here. I guess it mostly makes me just mentally roll my eyes, though granted not as much as "the Great Patriotic War". But I guess they both didn't start until 1941?
Hi all, I'm Allan live in England & really enjoy all forms of military history. I'm looking forward to discover some books i've never seen before. Feel free to add me as a friend.

But seriously, it's a great group, and I think you all will be glad you joined.
Hi everyone! I'm Alexis and I was pretty excited to find this group because WWII is definitely my history niche. For the most part I focus on espionage, code breaking, and Nazi Germany, but I'm always looking for good books about other aspects of the war, too. Glad to join you!
Welcome Alexis, you're sure to find plenty of members here interested in the same things. Glad to have you here!
