NokBee | 1 comments Hello everyone,

Many thanks to Rick for his kind email welcoming me to the group and suggesting I introduce myself.

I am a middle aged male well into my midlife crisis years but have thus far managed to avoid buying a sports car or a motorcycle. Am an economist by training and vocation but enjoy reading mostly history in my spare time, especially ancient and military history. Have always had a particular soft spot for WW2 history, probably the result of having read too many war comics when I was a kid. (Does anyone else remember "Commando: war stories in pictures"?). While I now have graduated to reading text which doesn't just have balloons around it, I still like stuff that is an easy read and isn't too dense or bookish. Recent WW2 books I have read and particularly enjoyed are Moorehead's Desert War Trilogy, Lukacs' 5 Days in London, and Werner's Iron Coffins.

I also enjoy reading memoirs and biographies. On that note, do people have any recommendations for any WW2 memoirs by Soviet and Japanese soldiers? Recommendations which are available on Kindle would be especially appreciated. I live in Bangkok, where the book selection is paltry, and most bookstores stock endless copies of the same 10 bestsellers.

Nok

Geevee | 3811 comments Welcome Nok and thank you for the interesting information.

I remember Commando/War Picture Library well as a kid, along with the Victor and Battle.

Some of the group have read or have on their TBRs: Stalin's General The Life of Georgy Zhukov by Geoffrey Roberts by Geoffrey Roberts

and a couple of people (Rick included) have read this:
Yamashita's Ghost War Crimes, MacArthur's Justice, and Command Accountability by Allan A. Ryan by Allan A. Ryan

Anthony Hill | 3 comments Hello all

My name is Anthony Hill, an Australian author of some 17 books, with an emphasis in recent years on Australian military history, all published by Penguin Books. I live in Canberra, the capital city.

The war books started with "Soldier Boy" (2001) about 14-year-old James Martin, so far as we know the youngest Anzac at Gallipoli in 1915, but almost certainly the youngest Australian soldier to die. The companion book was "Young Digger (2003) about a French war orphan, adopted as a mascot by some Australian airmen at the end of the First World War, and smuggled back to Australia in 1919.

"Animal Heroes" is a collection of 21 short stories about some of the dogs, horses, pigeons, mascots and pets that have served with Australian forces – from Simpson's donkey at Gallipoli in 1915, through the Second World War, Korea and Vietnam to more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

My most recent biographical novel is "The Story of Billy Young, A Teenager in Changi, Sandakan and Outram Road." Bill was only 15 when he joined the Australian Army in 1941; was sent to Malaya; captured when Singapore fell; and spent the rest of his teenage years a POW in some of the worst Japanese camps and prisons. Yet he survived – and is still with us at an active and incredibly positive 87. A real inspiration for any writer.

I'm currently working on a rather long saga about a soldier-settler family: First World War – Between the Wars – Second World War. I've just finished Part One: and taking a breather before starting Part Two have used the opportunity to join Goodreads.I'm looking forward to joining the WW2 Group discussions.

message 675: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments Hi John and you are very welcome. Do you have a particular interest area (locations, weapons, battles, strategy, intelligence, people/memoirs etc) or prefer something more general?

message 676: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19982 comments Hi John,

If something general I'd go with either Max Hasting of Antony Beevor's books on WW2:

Inferno The World at War, 1939-1945 by Max Hastings by Max Hastings

The Second World War by Antony Beevor by Antony Beevor

Although I still like some older classic's such as:

The Second World War by John Keegan by John Keegan

The Second World War A Complete History by Martin Gilbert by Martin Gilbert

Tionne | 255 comments Hi, my name is Tionne and I'm a book addict.
:-). I like to read history, mostly military history, and I really enjoy WWII history and 20th Century Irish History (among most other history) I majored in Modern European History, but I have yet to use my degree except for my own personal knowledge, which is ok. When my smallest son goes to Kindergarten, hopefully I will be able to use it to some extent. But for now, I'm happy to enjoy the sunshine, reading, and just being alive and living with the freedoms that others have bought for me. I'm eternally grateful to those people. which is why I find war to be so fascinating. Because of the soldiers. Because they are remarkable.

Raven (raven92) | 1 comments Hello everyone. I am glad I found this group. World War II was one of the biggest events of our time that had very considerable influence on the world. I like to know more and more about it. I've seen several Documentaries. Now it is time for reading books about it. I look forward to reading The Second World War.
