kilner | 3 comments Are we going to do them or are we too cool for that track?

message 2: by Louise (new)

Louise | 10 comments I'd like a group read, but the hard part is to get everyone to agree to one.

message 3: by kilner (new)

kilner | 3 comments The mod can just set one, and people could decide to join in or not if they feel up to it - a completely voluntary activity.

Scrambles | 11 comments Mmmmmmmmm there would need to be some planning in advanced to let people find, buy, borrow etc. If you do set something up make sure it isn't something massive.

message 5: by Wellington (new)

Wellington | 2 comments I'm in. I'd probably lag behind as I only really read on my commute. All other free time is dedicated to GAF!

Scrambles | 11 comments Anyone wanna do a book club for June/July?. July might work best since it gives everyone time to find the book. Might be easier if its a smallish book, 300-400 or so pages. If you have any recommendations.

John (roosters93) | 3 comments I'm interested.

Scrambles | 11 comments Think of some books to read then.

message 9: by Eric (new)

Eric | 1 comments Michael Lewis' The Big Short is now available digitally. It's not very long and his writing style is easy but engaging. Might be a good one for a group read?

message 10: by Marcus (new)

Marcus Grönskog (marcusgronskog) | 2 comments I'm all for a club read, but I'm afraid I can't really think of a fitting book. I'll read whatever is eventually decided on.

message 11: by Joel (new)

Joel (cajolejuice) | 3 comments I would read The Big Short, for sure.

Scrambles | 11 comments So for the Book Club we have chosen "The Big Short"

The Big Short Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis

"The Big Short" tells a story of spectacular, epic folly. It has taken the world's greatest financial meltdown to bring Michael Lewis back to the subject that made him famous. His international bestseller "Liar's Poker" exposed the greed and carnage of the City and Wall Street in the 1980s; he wrote it as a cautionary tale, but people seem to have read it as a how-to guide. Now, he wants to settle accounts. In this visceral tour to the heart of the financial system, Michael Lewis takes us around the globe and back decades to trace the origins of the current crisis. He meets the people who saw it coming, the people who were asleep at the wheel and the people who were actively driving us all of cliff. How could we have all been so deluded for quite so long? Where did it all start? Was it systemic? Was it avoidable? And who the hell can we blame? Michael Lewis has the answers. No one is better qualified to get to the heart of this labyrinthine story. And no one can make it such an enjoyable ride along the way.
