Rachel (randhrshipper1) | 66 comments THIS IS SO FUN!!!

I rolled...

6-- mystery or thriller
4-- 20th or 21st century literature

Total: 10-- One of the books must be by a GoodReads author.

I'm going to have to find GR authors now! I know a few but is there a list somewhere?

message 102: by Asho (last edited Apr 03, 2010 03:42PM) (new)

Asho | 181 comments Okay, so, just to clarify, I rolled a two (graphic novel) and then a four (20th/21st century literature). That added up to six, so I somehow have to connect the books.

I really want to read Maus for the graphic novel portion, so is it "connected" enough if I just find a 20th/21st century literature book about WWI or the Holocaust?

P.S.-What a fun task!

message 103: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Asho - You could read Maus I and Maus II, if your library has them published separately... ;) Part I ends sort of abruptly, so you're going to want to read both parts anyway...

Rachel - If you go to your to-read shelf, GoodReads authors have an asterisk by their names (so on yours, Gail Carriger and Lauren Willig).

Another way to find authors is to go up to the top, under "explore" and click on "authors"... On the right side, there's a section of popular authors, authors that were recently online, and authors that have recently joined GR. There are 556 PAGES of Popular Authors... so hopefully you can find ONE you want to read a book by! :)

I've been thinking about this and reading more reviews of the book, and I don't think the love story is big enough in it to make it count--everything I've seen makes it seem like the book is more about the protagonists feelings on spiritualism and religion and nature and how that affects her interactions with the Spaniards.

Yes, reading both Maus I and II would be acceptable, or reading Maus I and another book about the Holocaust.

message 105: by Helen (new)

Helen Southall (hsouthall) | 356 comments Ms Anderson: Just checking out my selections:

3 - Romance: The Carousel Painter -- a romance/mystery in a historical setting (1890's Ohio)

5 - Historical Fiction: Bud, Not Buddy set in 1936 but published in 1999 so it should meet the historical fiction requirement.

Total = 8 - one must have received an award - Bud, Not Buddy is a Newbery Winner for 2000.

Do these work?

message 106: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Looks good to me, Helen! I hope you like them both.

message 107: by Amy (new)

Amy (signgirlamy) I got 1 and 4 so it looks like I'll be reading a sci fi/fantasy and a 20/21st century novel, one of which will be 5 stars from someone's list.

Can it be from anyone's list? Or a specific friend, person from the group, etc?

message 108: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments It has to be from the list of someone you're in a group with. It doesn't have to be SCR, though.

message 109: by Amy (new)

Amy (signgirlamy) Okay, thanks! This task is awesome, by the way. Definitely one of my favorite ones I've seen

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Ms Anderson - I just wanted to check and make sure The Westing Game would be all right for my mystery. I've wanted to read it for a while (thanks to a great episode of Veronica Mars), and almost 400 people have it shelved as a mystery... I don't know much about it, but it looks mysterious to me!

Yup, it's definitely a mystery (and an incredibly good book, too!). Excellent choice!

I have read Malinche, and I wouldnt really classify it as a romance. While there is a 'relationship' it is certainly has nothing to do with love...

I actually hated this book, but hopefully you have better luck with it.

message 114: by [deleted user] (new)

Super fun task! I got two sixes and then a three, and I am deciding between romance/mystery or bio/short story collection.

message 115: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments I got a 3 and a 4 which equals 7 so that means I can read two books... whatever I want, right?

message 116: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Whatever you want :3

message 117: by Petra (new)

Petra Ms Anderson, I just wanted to tell you again how much I like your task!
I had rolled a 2 (Graphic Novel) and 5 (historical novel), which allows me to read any two books I want. I've decided on a graphic novel, Blankets, and a book I haven't been able to fit in anywhere else, The German Mujahid.
Thanks!

message 118: by Literally (last edited Apr 07, 2010 09:01PM) (new)

Literally Jen (vampsita) Ms Anderson, for autobiography/biography, would it be ok to read a memoir? More specifically, I would like to read Reading Lolita in Tehran. This would also fit for foreign born (my value rolled was a 4).

Also wondering if I could read Claire de Lune for my sci-fi/fantasy choice.

Thanks!!

message 119: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Memoirs are fine, but let me get back to you on the other book, if that's okay.

message 120: by Literally (new)

Literally Jen (vampsita) Yes, that's fine. :-) Just an FYI: werewolf books are commonly shelved in sci-fi/fantasy at B&N and Borders.

message 121: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments I'm going to accept it. I've seen books with supernatural creatures shelved all over the place so I was going to ask the head librarian where I work, but she was out today. So, for the sake of simplicity, sure, since they don't actually exist!

PS: Let me know how it is--I'm building a stockpile of books to read over the summer lol

message 122: by Literally (new)

Literally Jen (vampsita) Excellent! Thank you very much. It's YA, so at bookstores (I used to work at B&N) it would have just been thrown on the shelf not categorized. I think even on Amazon.com they might break it down into a subcategory of YA, Sci-fi/Fantasy, Paranormal. I didn't think to see what they tag it as on Amazon.

I *think* I like it so far...I'm about 60 or so pages into it now...but I got distracted by Percy Jackson, so knowing me, I want to finish Percy Jackson before I get back to "Claire de Lune". But I'll let you know what I think when I am finally done. Just needed a day or two break from it.

message 123: by Jay (new)

Jay (jaydek) | 58 comments I got a 2 and a 3...for a total of 5, so I have to read a graphic novel and a biography/autobiography, and one of them has to be a 5 star rating from a group.

Mrs. Anderson - would Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang count as an autobiography? It's not her life story, but it is sort of a memoir (which I saw you approved below).

Also--to clarify my supplement--I cannot use just my friends' 5-star rating books, correct? I have to use a 5-star rating from someone (friend or not) that is a member of a group I also am a member of. Let me know if I'm understanding that correctly. For example, I have a friend that ranked Maus I: A Survivor's Tale: My Father Bleeds History 5-stars, but he is not a member of this group, and I'm having trouble tracking down who is a member of this group and ranked that book 5-stars (whereas with your friends, their rankings/thoughts on a book pops up on that book's page when you click it, so it's much easier to find).

If that is the rule, this is the only group I'm a member of -- so if anyone has any 5-star recommendations for a graphic novel or an autobiography/biography...I'm all ears!!

message 124: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Memoirs do count for the bio/autobio part. You have the idea of the 5-star book right, too--the person needs to be a part of a group you're also in.

I wish now that I would've liked Maus I better--I rated Maus II 5 stars. Other graphic novels I rated 5-stars are American Born Chinese, MARS, Volume 1, and Ranma 1/2, Volume 1. I rated Peg Kehret's memoir Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio and Jung Chang's Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China 5 stars, as well, if you can't find a graphic novel that fits.

Good luck, and I'm sorry it's kind of a pain finding people who ranked graphic novels highly!

Jay,

Sara (with the heart symbol), from this group, rated Maus 5 stars. I clicked on the Maus booklink, then the 5 star link, and scrolled down until I recognized a member avatar from the group. You should be good with this book now!

I am actually almost done re-reading it and was hoping to find somewhere to put it in the challenge. I just re-read the whole series!!! It is one of my favorite series.

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Rachel Lee wrote: "Would you consider City of Glass a romance?"

Having only read some descriptions and not the rest of the series (I own the first book, but haven't gotten to it yet), I'm going to say no. It seems like its a fantasy/SF story with a little romance tossed in from the GR, Amazon, and the author's own descriptions of the book. There may be a romantic thread in there, but it looks like it takes a backseat to everything else going on in the story. I'm sorry!

message 133: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (goodquietkitty) My second roll was a 2 (non-fiction), so I was hoping to use some memoirs I just finished. But then I realized Biography/Autobiography is a different number. Does that mean I can't count the memoirs as non-fiction?

message 134: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments When I wrote it, I meant for bio/autobio/memoir and non-fiction to be separate, yes. I should've been more specific in my instructions. Sorry!

Heartbreak! Ok, that's my own fault for not reading closer.

message 136: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (jmages) | 20 comments I got a 6 and a 2 - I already had The Pursuit of Happynessdownloaded to listen to so that will be my Non-fiction. Now I need suggestions on a Mystery/Thriller that won an award. Anybody got an idea for me??

message 137: by El (new)

El Joanne, you might take a look at the Edgar Award list to see if any of those books look good to you.

I also saw this list of Mystery/Crime fiction awards - you might take a peek at some of them as well.

message 138: by Louvaine (new)

Louvaine | 98 comments I rolled 6 (mystery/thriller) and 2 (nonfiction) with my supplement being 8=one of them must be an award winner. This is fun!

Joanne - if you haven't read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (or one from the series), those would qualify. especially the first which has won multiple awards.

Also, check out Michael Connelly and Lee Child who are both huge in that genre and have won multiple awards for various books.

If you are in to YA, I really liked What I Saw And How I Lied that won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature.

message 143: by laurel (new)

laurel (laurea) | 6 comments I'm very glad I read thru this as I totally didn't know the 5 star rating had to be from someone in one of my groups. And you even said you rated one of my choices as a five (Maus II)! Very nice challenge.

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Thank you! And I apologize now for my summer task not quite living up to this one ^_^;
