Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10000 comments I'm reading Crunch Time by Diane Mott Davidson, a book in the "Goldie the caterer" series; Goldie (as usual) inserts herself into a homicide investigation in between cooking lots of yummy dishes. This series is good if you're in the mood for a cozy type mystery where the crimes aren't uber violent and grisly.

Monica | 75 comments I'm at the very beginning of the second Louise Penny book, A Fatal Grace...hoping i enjoy it as much as the first.

I am loving it. Not your deepest murder mystery but funny. (Probably sneaky deep if your brain gets working on it.)

My mistake (my middle-aged brain!!). I have already read The Crossing Places and I read the second, The Janus Stone and now I'm looking forward to the third. I really like the characters in the novel.

message 3266: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) I have now finished "Bubba and the Dead Woman." It's not exactly going to impress you with complexity but boy, I haven't laughed this much reading a book in ages.

This book is really funny. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for something light and entertaining. If your looking for a dark, complex mystery, keep looking.

It is country humor in the best "Jerry Clower" tradition and that don't set well with some. It'd make a great movie. IF they could make Fred Ward look over six feet tall, he could play "Bubba."

I love the Elly Griffiths series also, have read all three. Have you ever read Ann Cleaves, she writes a set of mysteries that are set in the Shetland islands. They are very good also.

Linda: I was interested most of the way into the book but found the ending somewhat dissatisfying. All the loose ends were tied up and there were a couple little twists, but it just left me wanting.

G. M. Ford usually places his tales in Seattle, where I am from, and unlike his other series novels, this was not true to the city and perhaps that's why I was a little thrown off, not that the location had any great relevance. I just kind of spent too much time trying to track it to real locations I guess.

I guess I like his series better than this stand alone. Picked up another Robert Crais/Joe Pike book and I'm feeling more comfortable with it.

message 3270: by Anna (new)

Anna | 371 comments I'm definitely intending to read the 2nd Elly Griffiths novel. Coincidentally, I got an Ann Cleeves book from the library this week A Bird in the Hand. I've not read any of her's before but it looks good.

Susan Anderson (susanrussoanderson) | 9 comments I just finished reading P.D. James's latest, The Private Patient. I don't think it got favorable reviews, but I really liked it, not as much as The Murder Room, but I still liked it, especially the ending. I like Joe Pike better than Jack Reacher, though it's close. Jack's a little more "cuddly."

message 3278: by T (new)

T (twoo) I haven't read any Reacher, but after all the discussion, I'm going to give at least one a try! Not that I need to get hooked on any more authors until I at least get my TBR pile reduced again!

Picked up G.M. Fords because he is somewhat local, but he's not at the top of my favorites list.

message 3279: by The Pirate Ghost (last edited Aug 12, 2011 10:26AM) (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) I'm still laughing to myself over Bubba Shoddy (from "Bubba and the Dead Woman.") Locally publushed from the same neck of the woods my mother grew up. It's funny. I should probably stop carrying on about that one... still laugh though.

I LOVE Elly Griffiths series! I've read Crossing Places and Janus Stone and just got an advance copy of The House at Sea's End. That is #3 in the series and pubs in the US in January 2012. Probably already out in the UK.
I also love Ann Cleeves. Raven Black is the first of her Shetland Island Quartet. We did this with our monthly Mystery Book Group and people just loved it. Ditto Elly Griffiths Crossing Places. Both authors, great reads.

message 3290: by Ethan (new)

Ethan I just finished reading I'd Know You Anywhere by Laura Lippman. In this mesmerizing novel, Laura Lippman twists what could have been a straight forward thriller into an introspective narrative about a woman's unwillingness to accept her past, and the ways in which previous events shaped her into the person she has become. This was my first Lippman novel, and I can definitely see myself reading another one in the future.

Now I'm starting Feast Day Of Fools by James Lee Burke. This is my first novel by the author and the third in a series so I really hope it is good.

Beth | 408 comments I just finished Quick Service (Everyman Wodehouse) by P.G. Wodehouse Quick Service

I'm a huge fan of Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster short stories, but this is the first time I've read this novel of his. Absolutely hilarious with hoot out-loud sentences that you read again just to savor them again. I highly recommend this funny, classic read.
