Finished Cody McFadyen's The Darker Side: A Thriller last night, and enjoyed it enough to make it a fast read. Started non-MCT Casella's Oxygen this morning.

I agree I think this was a first book in a new series, and I didn't even finish reading it, Really surprising since I love the Pendergast series.

Finished The Pawn. It has a high rating here, but I wasn't feeling it. I thought the plot was so convoluted. I'm going to move on to the next one, at some point, because I did like the main characters. I just felt like they were trapped in a bad plot.

I tried The Pawn but I didn't get in to it, didn't finish it even. I put it on the try it again someday list :)

So, I was at the library over the weekend, to get some audio books and stumbled across Cody McFadyen, she writes a seris correct??? I think the one I had in my hand was further down in the series - so I put it back... I was intrigued by the story line though.

I just read my first Cody McFadyen, #3 in the series I think, and liked it enough to watch for others by him. The one I just read was The Darker Side....the recurring characters have got some baggage, and he gives you some background on them in the #3 book, not sure if they have evolved from the previous books.

I found in on sale, used at the local university bookstore and picked it up on a whim.

Jus finished Blood Tieswhich had a very good storyline about the lengths a town will go to in order to protect their football jocks. HAve now started Dreams of the Dead which is another series I have read for a long time. This is the 13th in the series.

Yup lots of baggage in these!... the characters do evolve over the series so reading from the 1st is an advantage. I like the characters and follow the series :)

Just finished Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo. A great read from an author I've never read before, but will be reading more of in the future.

I finished Butter Safe Than Sorry by Tamar Myers. There's actually not much "mystery" in the plot but if you enjoy humorous cozies with a bunch of recipes thrown in you might like to try this series about an Amish Mennonite woman who likes to sleuth.

Finished Grisham's The Confession last night. Now onto my first Jack Reacher novel. After all the hoopla over the casting for a movie, I thought I'd check it out.

In retrospect there were two issues I had.

Tony Hill did not really profile the killer he worked off a hunch. This is not his MO.

Carol put a fellow officer in harm's way after what happened to her previously.

Felt in the mood for a little more old-fashioned, leisurely mystery so gathered up three of the Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell books by Laurie King on my last library trip.

About halfway through "The Moor" now and enjoying it, slow pace, elegant writing and good character play between the two major characters.

Love these books but you are right the pace is very slow, interesting but slow. She has a new Mary Rossell coming out this fall, though they say Sherlock only plays a token part. Enjoy!

The first book of the series, The Beekeeper's Apprentice really caught my attention. I own it and have re-read it numerous times. So far the ones that have followed have not been 'regular re-reads' but I do pick them up at the library and re-read occasionally when I feel the need for a slower paced more old fashioned mystery. The author does an outstanding job of recreating the slower pace of an earlier era.

There is enough character background given to explain some of the baggage, so I was comfortable popping into the middle....I'll go back and read the ones I miss just for more depth of the character's story line, but I'm okay with reading out of order....

I thought it was one of his better ones. If you read his non-fiction

The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town then I'd describe this as a fictionalized version with believable characters, well-paced action, and a plot that, while not unpredictable, is very satisfying.

I just finished The Book of God and Physics by Enrique Joven. It had great European history with a focus on developments in astronomy. The Voynich manuscript is stored at Yale and 3 scientists try to track down the key to unlocking it. The Book of God and Physics: A Novel of the Voynich Mystery

I just finished Restless by William Boyd. I liked Ordinary Thunderstorms, but Restless didn't really grab me. I gave it 3 stars because I liked it, yet somehow didn't. Odd one as I can't quite put my finger on it. I think the core idea was good, but perhaps the delivery let it down. Just not very exciting, I guess and half of it seemed filled with padding to give the present day narrative substance. Not sure what to read next. I've probably joined the group a little late to get in on the discussion in time for McDermid's 'A place of execution', but might read it anyway. I need something pacey after Restless, that's for sure.

Just finished One Second After by William R. Forstchen. Excellent but downright scarey! When you think it is a possible scenario!
Found a new author - Harlan Coben. Love his books. Have been reading them one by one! They have kept me awake all night on more than one occasion!
