Melki Just finished "The Sisters Brothers" by Patrick DeWitt. Technically a western, though I found it pretty thrilling. One of the best I've read this year.

Dena | 97 comments Finished The Devil's Star this evening. I'm giving Jo Nesbo a rest for awhile. I think I'll read something a little less intense.

That one is on my list. Maybe I'd better try to get to it soon.

message 2711: by Beth (new)

Beth | 28 comments Just finished In The Dark by Mark Billingham. It was really good but I didn't love the ending.

Going to start Room next I think

message 2712: by Elli (new)

Elli | 228 comments Finished Hotel Angelique, short, but sweet...mystery and drama sweet, not a sweet romance, and am now starting Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell. The friend from whom I learned about it commented that this is not for everyone, which is a great way of putting it. But in looking over the author's bio, and in what she described, I think I am going to thoroughly enjoy it. Besides a decided taste for certain types of what can be considered a wacky humor and health issues right now. this may be just what the doctor ordered....

Mary Colette wrote: "Mary wrote: "Just starting "Halfhead" by Stuart McBride, a departure for me being a futuristic novel, but I'm giving it a go."

I'm about halfway through it now and I am really enjoying it.

Gatorman | 7679 comments Just finished both The Girl Next Door and One, Two ... He is coming for you. Girl is a 5-star read and One Two is a 2-star read. Just started Seed.

message 2715: by Kellyyyylynne (new)

Kellyyyylynne I just finished Live to Tell. Great book, I had figured out pretty early on who the "killer" was but it took me a while to put the whole story together. I am just getting started on Four Thrillers by Lisa Unger: Beautiful Lies, Sliver of Truth, Black Out, Die for You. I am about 30 pages in to the first book. This should keep me busy for a bit, although there are quite a few books coming out over the next few weeks that I can't wait to get my hands on.

message 2716: by Jill H. (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Just finished The Various Haunts of Men by Susan Hill. It is the first of the Simon Serailler series. I wasn't that thrilled with it......the main character barely appeared in the story and it seemed to have too many story threads that weren't completed. I had read Shadows in the Street by the same author and rather enjoyed so I will probably try another of the series.

Finished The Poacher's Son over the weekend. This was for my in person group next week and I will be interested to hear what the group has to say.

First of all, I loved the setting in the wilds of Maine. The descriptions were very vivid. It's not your run of the mill police procedural, however. Some of the characters could have been a bit more defined but then I belive the author was really focusing on the relationship between the main character, Game Warden Mike Bowditch and his fugitive father, Jack. All in all a very interesting and absorbing read.

Diane S ☔ | 438 comments Cannot get into Centuries of June so I have put it aside. Just not my style of book. Have now started Vienna Twilight by Frank Tallis.

Susan | 69 comments I am currently reading A Prisoner of Birth by Jeffrey Archer. It is pretty good so far and is suspenseful. However it was a member pick for a mystery book club but I'm not seeing much mystery.

message 2726: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cathy_perkins) | 56 comments I'm reading Ann Charles debut, Nearly Departed in Deadwood (Deadwood Mystery #1) by Ann Charles . I haven't gotten far (busy weekend) so I'm enjoying it.

message 2727: by Elli (new)

Elli | 228 comments Am into Beat the Reaper, and it is very drawing. And sometimes the draw is quite negative. This book certainly is not for everyone. But somehow...I'm not in far enough to say whether I really Like it. But I can say, I certainly respect it and the underlying thoughts in what is happening. Mainly the value of human life in our commercially and economically prioritized world. Exaggerated, yes, but a well written, well presented medical viewpoint. We'll see how it goes.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9999 comments I'm reading Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Choir: A Ruby, the Rabbi's Wife Mystery by Sharon Kahn. I've taken a shine to this cozy series even though the plots are sometimes a bit more unbelievable than they should be. Still the books are humorous and diverting.

message 2729: by Melki (new)

Melki Oh, Barbara - everything about that title makes me happy! :)

message 2730: by Mary (new)

Mary Just finished "The Missing" by Chris Mooney and am now reading "The Creeper" by Tania Carver.

message 2731: by Elli (new)

Elli | 228 comments Couldn't put it down. Finished Beat the Reaper. It really took hold. A former mafia hit man joins the Witness Protection Program and finishes his M.D. And suddenly finds himself confronting someone he did not want to see from the former life. This has alot of dark humor, alot of fast action, and alot of incredible situations. I enjoyed it. But as for recommending...this is not for everyone.

message 2732: by Jill H. (last edited Jun 21, 2011 07:15PM) (new)

Jill H. (bucs1960) Am reading my fourth John Rebus mystery, Let It Bleed by Ian Rankin. I really like this series about the Scots detective who is haunted by his own demons. This particular book is centered around the Scottish government and it is a little hard to keep it all straight...........but it still is a fascinating read.

I listened to Beat the Reaper and the reader did a fabulous job with the voices/accents. Be warned there are some pretty gory descriptions in this book, of course you can skim those paragraphs and still enjoy the book. Harder to do in the audiobook version though.

Ethan I just finished The Stranger You Seek by Amanda Kyle Williams through the first reads program. This is going to be a great crime series, so be on the lookout when it drops on 8/30/11. In the meantime, check out my review of the novel.

message 2747: by Ananth (new)

Ananth Subramanian Just finished reading Circular Staircase by Mary Roberts Rinehart. Not very good but certainly worth a read.

I am not sure but I think the book was writen in 1940s or before. Little tired of the current mystery stuff with its macho investigators (whether men or women),psychopath killers and a bit of sex thrown in.Hardly any mystery or investigation. More like a mixture of Ian Flemming and Harold Robins. So I reverted back to mystery classics of the pre 1970 period. These are influenced by Sherlock Holmes or Father brown series. Murder in a intriguing set up, plenty of clues and a logical and rational unravelling of mystery by protagonist.

May not be realistic but gripping with suspense and more interactive in the sense you get involved and tend to play the role of the detective.

Nothing can be better for a light and enjoyable reading.Clean language with plenty of subtle humour.

message 2748: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I just finished Night Soldiers, a marvelous spy novel that I learned about from this group. Excellent, superb, cannot find enough superlatives for this. I've ordered Dark Star, even though I'd promised myself not to buy any more books until I'd read at least 10 of what I already own.
