Kelly McMichael (kelly_mcmichael) | 6 comments Hi Doreen, I tried listening to the Pawn on audio a couple of years ago but couldn't keep up--it kept jumping around on me because I couldn't listen to it everyday. Kept getting confused. I meant to try it in book form. Let me know how it is! I've heard good things about it and it was interesting--just some books are tough in audio form.

Hi, Kelly --
You're right -- it jumps from one character's current predicament to another character's, so you have to listen closely. I was totally engrossed and was able to keep at it so my confusion was kept to a minimum :-)

Dena | 97 comments Just finished reading Started Early, Took my Dog by Kate Atkinson. My husband heard a review of it while he was driving to work yesterday and wanted me to try it. This is the first of her books I've read and I was impressed. I hope Tracy Waterhouse shows up in some of her other books. Tracy is real and I want to know more about her.

I really like this series - they're a bit different. I've read Have Mercy on Us All and The Three Evangelists so far.

Just finished Death in the Stocks by Georgette Heyer. It was light and entertaining but still a solid mystery. Written and set in the early 1930s it was Agatha Christie with a dash of P.G. Wodehouse.

I liked it quite a bit until the author made a reveal towards the end of the book that pretty much killed it for me. I don't want to spoil it for others, but It thought the manner in which it was done was not fair to the reader.

Jan C (woeisme) | 39237 comments I just got Cold in the Earth by Aline Templeton. Scottish noir, I guess.

The Prologue was a real page turner. I am just hoping it is not like a couple of things I have read lately where what is in the Prologue seems to have nothing to do with what is in the book.

I have picked up about three books where The Prologue really had me going. And then the actual book is something totally different. Like it is a teaser to get you to take the book. Or maybe I just haven't read far enough into those books to get back to some relationship to the Prologue.

I enjoy Kathy Reichs too! She makes the forensics seem very vivid to me. I'm currently reading her book, Cross Bones, and like it very much.

Carol, I know exactly what you mean!! Love them both. They both write about such strong, independent, successful female characters, which is great.

I've just started Ishiguro's When We Were Orphans. His use of language is just so wonderful. I'm just at the beginning so it's hard to know where the book will go, but it's so beautiful getting there.

I like Anne Perry's mystery series, both the Monk and Pitt ones. The crimes are interesting and there's usally a good twist somewhere along the line. I do get mad at the snobby upper class Brits in the books - but they often get their comeuppance :)

Mine's audio also and I'm having a hard time with it... the story is ok but one of the voices is just driving me nuts. I'm going to put it away as unread, see if another time I'll be more patient with it.

Hi, Aprilla --
Sorry you didn't enjoy The Pawn. Is Richard Ferrone the narrator?

message 2087: by aprilla (new)

aprilla Yes he is Doreen, and I like the book and him well enough but I started off bad with one of his character voices so have decided to mark it unread and to try it another time.

Steve Anderson | 87 comments Started Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby. Can't believe I've never read it, since I'm a huge soccer dork. I was looking for something lighter after The Warsaw Anagrams, which was a great but grim historical thriller about an elderly Jew trying to find the killer of his young nephew from within the Warsaw Ghetto.

K.B. Hallman (kbhallman) | 302 comments Wow! 181 new posts since I last checked this discussion. Where did the time go? Looks like you all have been reading some great stuff. The past couple of weeks, I've been on a Louise Penny kick. I finished The Brutal Telling, A Rule Against Murder, and The Cruellest Month. And I'm currently reading Bury Your Dead. I have to say that I'm beginning to miss petulant Agent Nichol. And I'm not entirely thrilled with the directions she's taken some of the characters. But I do enjoy her books all the same.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 335 comments I just finished Hold Tight by Harlan Coben , this book was really good, it makes you wonder how far your would how far would you invade your children's privacy for the sake of their safety. Would you put spyware on their computer to monitor their emails and IM messages. Would you ativate the GPS on their cell phones so you can keep up with their comings and goings. This book will really make you think, I gave it 5 stars.
