It's disturbing, as far as what is going on in the story... but the book itself is really good!! I did enjoy it... it was just very realistic and made me cringe at times! In Death is just wonderful!! The characters are so great! :)

I'll probably finish it tonight Aiesha. Then I have to check out all her other books! Can't wait for the next one since this looks like a series.
Jannene wrote: "I just finished Hothouse Orchid which is the last in the Holly Barker series. I liked the series and am sad it is over."Jannene, Holly Barker is really not over! The author brings her character back in many Stone Barrington books, especially the newest one by Stuart Woods,
Severe Clear.
. She now works for the CIA! Check it out.

Hi Jannene,
You will love Kill Me If You Can. I couldn't put the book down. James Patterson did an excellent job as always. Happy reading!

Just finished Sharp Objects While I kind of figured out who did it pretty early, learning why they did kept the book going for me. This is a disturbing book at times but well written and I have now read all three of this author's novels. Dark places, Gone girl, and now Sharp objects.
Just finished
He sure has a way, doesn't he?I also read some time ago
. Both of these stories were intenseand a darn, good read.
I finished Await Your Reply by Dan Chaon which is billed as a psychological suspense novel about stolen identities. The book got good reviews but I was disappointed. By the time I was 2/3 thru the book I really didn't care much about the characters anymore or about what happened to them. I'd give it 3 stars.

I Love Linwood Barclay, he is currently my new favourite author, his writing is very captivating.
If you like the above books, you will love
, and
,Enjoy!
I'm currently reading the 3rd Inspector Alleyn mystery, The Nursing Home Murder and the first Mary Russell/ Sherlock Holmes mystery, The Beekeeper's Apprentice and enjoying both.

How was Dark Places? Was Sharp Objects better than Gone Girl to you? I've heard from a few people that it was. I'm #4 on the waiting list for Sharp Objects so I can't wait to read it soon!!

It would be a toss up for me on which I liked more. I enjoyed all 3. They were all disturbing in the characters. I guess I would say that Dark Places would be the one I liked best. I found that I thought more while reading it. I really looked at the main character and how the events of her child hood stunted her. I also liked that she was short and to me it represented how she was stunted emotionally by the tragedy.
I'm going to try Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, however I have doubts that I'll be able to read it. I liked Gone Girl, but had to put Sharp Objects down. Much too dark and depressing for me!!
Heidi wrote: "Currently reading a new mystery series The Hanover Square Affair. Enjoying it so far!"That's one of my favorites, Heidi! Hope you enjoy it. All the books in that series are good.
I finishedConsent To Kill by Vince Flynn. It's another good read by Mr. Flynn but my only complaint is (view spoiler). I'm now reading The Two Minute Rule by Robert Crais
I just finished
. I loved the audio book. I'm going to start
as an audio book to listen while working out. I am still reading Fan Mail. It is just getting better.
I recently finished
The Twenty Year Death
by Ariel S. Winter. It's one of Hard Case Crime's more recent publications--a huge honkin' tome, three novels in one, each written in the style of a long-gone mystery master. My review is here. There's also a giveaway of a hardback copy of the book if anyone's interested.
OK. I have to stop doing this. When I find a writer I like, I try to read the books in order. Currently reading (in some cases, re-reading) Connolly's Harry Bosch books. I wouldn't be reading these if I didn't like them.....but...:I'm starting to see Connolly's bad habits in writing. The Bosch series always seems to dwell on Harry's bad luck with his women. There are always interludes where the story is diverted by his woman problems. However, once he anguishes for a few minutes, it seems he's right back in the game and no looking back. I'm starting to get the impression the personal life is written in just as a diversion rather than do develop empathy for the character.
Some things are getting annoying. Every time Harry makes or receives a call, we are told exactly how many rings before the call is picked up.
Now, these little annoyances aren't going to stop me from reading more, its just a case of getting too familiar with a writer and these things start to jar the eyeballs a bit.
Being a writer I kind of notice this stuff, particularly in my own drafts. I'm blessed with some editing help that loves to search and destroy. They think I like to jar their eyeballs and am doing stuff on purpose.
Oh, Ken. Thank you for that. I needed the chuckle. I feel like such a curmudgeon when I notice things like that. Writer's do have their quirks, don't they? I just finished a book--which will remain nameless because it was actually really good--where pain "blossoms" over and over and over again. It doesn't stab or anything else. No, like a spring bloom it blossoms. I wasn't petty enough to count. Just petty enough to groan every time the poor main character suffered a blossom.
I wondered if I was the only one to notice such things, since the editors of the authors in question certainly don't. I often feel that books aren't badly written, just badly edited.
Dee wrote: "I wondered if I was the only one to notice such things, since the editors of the authors in question certainly don't. I often feel that books aren't badly written, just badly edited."Has Stephen King ever had a character taste blood that DIDN'T taste like copper?
Just finished Gun Machine by Warren Ellis which was really good and Before I Go To Sleep by SJ Watson which was okay. Now reading Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn which is brilliant but utterly horrible.

I'm now reading Dark Places and its just as disturbing. I'm not sure I will finish it, but willing to give it a try. I did like Gone Girl, but these two previous books are too dark, depressing and disturbing and I cannot relate, nor do I like the main characters.

It seems they all have some quirks or habits that get annoying after awhile.
It's been a long week. My kindle fire stopped holding a charge, so I had to make a decision about getting a replacement or upgrading. I decided on the upgrade, but I had to wait for the new on to arrive, and in the meanwhile, I got a little behind on my reading. I just finished The Likeness
and started Brooklyn Bones
Julie wrote: "I think if you read a lot of books by one author, you will start to pick up on their little quirks. It seems they all have some quirks or habits that get annoying after awhile."I agree. I ALWAYS read books by each author in order, but I break them up so I'm not reading the same series all at once. Coming back to a series after reading a few other books always kind of feels like I'm visiting an old friend.
Currently reading The Black Book
by Ian Rankin. Fifth in his Inspector Rebus series - set in Scotland.
Listened to Damaged by Alex Kava and it was entertaining but very gross in parts. It would make a good action flick.
Finished reading Invisible Country: A Mystery by Annamaria Alfieri. Very interesting. I knew absolutely nothing about the history of Paraguay and the war with Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil so this was an education as well as a good mystery.

I also finished Only the Innocent over the holidays:
And here's the review:

And I'm now about a third of the way into:
I finsihed The Two Minute Rule by Robert Crais. Another fun read by Mr. Crais. Now I'm caught up and waiting for his new release Suspect. I'm now reading my first Patricia Cornwell novel Postmortem
