Bob Mayer (bob_mayer) | 15 comments Re-reading Mystic River by Dennis Lehane for third time. I love his voice and it helps me with my own writing. The line between omniscient and third limited is so narrow. I see he has a new book out-- will definitely be getting it.

Jeanie (birdyseeds) | 382 comments Presently listening to Mad River, John Sandford's new "Virgil Flowers" book. (sighing happily)

Donna Galanti (donnagalanti) | 30 comments I'm having a ton of fun reading works authors have offered for me to consider recommending for the Bram Stoker awards and I found a new author I love! Billie Sue Mosiman (and a new kind of book - the novella!)

Just read her Prison Planet and Mourning Mansion. Both stayed with me - one as disturbing and one as a tragic time in our world that could come to be. She crafted the characters well for such a short space of time too. These are characterized as horror but I wouldnt have thought of them in that regard - not 'classic horror' with strange beings and gore. More like a Farenheit 451 feel.

PRISON PLANET by Billie Sue Mosiman

message 8008: by JB (last edited Oct 03, 2012 06:19PM) (new)

JB Rowley (jbrowley) I have just finished Agatha Raisin and the Haunted House Agatha Raisin and the Haunted House (Agatha Raisin, #14) by M.C. Beaton - audio book. It was a good 'read' but I was disappointed that the sub plot was so similar to Agatha Raisin and the Day the Floods Came. The love interest character was similar as well(and rather boring). However, I will try a couple more of the Agatha Raisin series; the narration by Penelope Keith is enough to keep me going back.

A really inventive crime firction read which would appeal outside the genre too. Have reviewed. Next read is a Jessie Kean novel which I expect will be very different.

am now reading Ragtime in Simla (Joe Sandilands, #2) by Barbara Cleverly which continues the Joe Sandilands series in India in the 1920's - this one is even better than the first in my opinion

Finally finished The Boy in the Suitcase. Very interesting and with an ending not at all what you might expect from the title. The plight of immigrants in their own countries or new countries was subtly woven in a page turning thriller. I will say the beginning was slightly confusing jumping from place to place and it took a bit to see the threads and motivations start to come together but ultimately there was a satisfactory - and very surprising ending.

I had the good fortune to meet both authors just last evening at our local bookstore and the conversation was enlightening. I look forward to the next book from them and more on the changing face of Europe.

This one ended up being a favorite of mine when I read it but unfortunately, I haven't cared much for the way the main character developed in subsequent books.

message 8049: by Tay (new)

Tay | 261 comments I wrapped up Indigo Slam by Robert Crais. I'm now reading Suspect by Michael Robotham. Really slow book.

message 8050: by Georgia (new)

Georgia | 554 comments I am reading A Monstrous Regiment of Women (Mary Russell, #2) by Laurie R. King which I am finding most interesting. Love Mary Russell. Sherlock Holmes is flitting in and out of this one as their relationship is getting more scrutinized by both of them.(We all know what this is
leading to, so I take it as a bit of humor!)The subject matter is interesting, 3 possible murders, an accident involving one of Mary's friends, Lady Veronica Beaconship, a medium, and a study of religion, jewish faith. Laurie R. King is excellent
in this field. I like her books as they are always
new and fresh, but maintain the tone of Sherlock
stories.
