This morning I finished Parched - Z.L. Arkadie. I am going to carry on reading The Man From U.N.D.E.A.D. - The Curious Case Of The Kidnapped Chemist - Darren Humphries.

I read these books on holiday recently and enjoyed all of them, particularly the first two. Robert Goddard and Lee Child are complete masters of their craft. So is Ian Rankin, but Inspector Fox is not such a compelling protagonist as Inspector Rebus.

Many of the classic novels are quite short. I think it takes a great writer AND a great story to maintain a page-turning pace for much more than 80,000 words.

I recently finished reading Fear of the Dark by Walter Mosley. It's the third in his Fearless Jones series set in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts during the 1950s. Mosley is an amazing author, and I can't praise him enough--which is why my review might be just a tad bit sycophantic. Whatever. At least I acknowledge it, right?

I finished The Border Lords by T. Jefferson Parker; to me the book was disappointing. After a big build up with a mysterious illness and illegal arms sales the ending fizzled out in my opinion. I felt the book was mostly a set up for a sequel.

I just finished A Conflict of Interest by Adam Mitzner. A very good legal thriller. Just when you thought you knew what was coming he throws a twist in there and there were a few of those. I am now reading The Confessor by Daniel Silva

Just finished listening to Hunting Season by Nevada Barr and I loved the descriptions of the Natchez Chase.

Now listening to Motor Mouth by Janet Evanovich. Light and entertaining even if murder and mayhem reign.

Just started You Are Next by Katia Lief and Love You More by Lisa Gardner. It has proved very interesting reading these two side by side. Although I am enjoying both, Lisa Gardner is out in front with the latest D D Warren instalment.

Lisa Gardner didn't disappoint at all with her D.D. Warren series!! I absolutely LOVED it!! I am ready for a new one already! Katia Lief is an author I would like to read as well. How are you liking her book?

I am currently not reading Auster's New York trilogy. I have started this quite a few times and can't get past the reflexive intrusions of the narrator. I find this odd, as I don't object to these postmodern elements in other novels, nor in movies -- except, significantly, Auster movies. The real reasons for my objection to Auster remain unanalyzable. I give up.

I just finished both The Black Echo by Connelly and Takeover by Lisa Black. Both were GREAT books!! The Black Echo was a little more deep and in depth while the Takeover was lighter but very suspenseful! I am now trying to decide what to read next. One of my groups is reading the first in the Bones series, Déjà Dead, so either that or the next Bosch book, The Black Ice... or both! It just takes a little longer to get them both done. Decisions, decisions!!

Barbara, The Border Lords is part of an ongoing series featuring Charlie Hood. That may be why the ending was an issue for you. The story continues on.

This is Katia Lief first book featuring Karin Schaeffer it is a little slow getting going but most of that is due to the author creating the back story. I'm enjoying it so far.

My dad would read us Patrick McManus books. They are funny! His They Shoot Canoes, Don't They? was funny. I remember dad laughing so hard and us laughing while he was reading them to us. He has some good humorous books.

I don't know anything about Lisa Black but the Harry Bosch books are amazing and highly recommended.

I just finished reading The Book of Madness and Cures. It was a slow historical novel, so I've decided I need a good mystery/thriller to read next. I am now reading The Inquisitor's Key by Jefferson Bass. This is the first novel that I've read from the series, so it will be interesting to see how I like it.

Just finished Disco for the Departed (#3) by Colin Cotterill.
I thoroughly enjoy this mystery series which is the perfect combination of mystery, humor, history, politics and mysticism. I got so caught up in this story that I had to jump to the end (something I rarely do) just to see what happened to Mr. Geung. Great series.

I just finished reading Endangered by Pamela Beason, and loved it. I did a great interview with Pam at my website last week, and loved her passion for the outdoors -- a passion clearly conveyed in her novels. Now reading a soon-to-be-released mystery by Darcy Scott that I'm wild about. I'll be interviewing Darcy later this month.

I love that book! Maureen is such a memorable character, and Mina does a phenomenal job of capturing voices and painting the scene. Funny, I didn't even realize it was part of a series -- now must go find the others!

My most recent read is that of The Mystery in the Yellow Room by Gaston LeRoux. Originally published in 1907, it's been hailed as one of the seminal works of French mystery fiction. It's also been called one of the best locked room mysteries of all time. That, I'm not so sure about. Read all about it in my review here.

I hope you like this series, Ethan. Personally I don't think it's necessary to read the books in order. I'm looking forward to downloading this tomorrow morning. The 3-chapter preview I read has me wanting more. I may be morbid but the Body Farm just fascinates me.

Just started Bible of the Dead by Tom Knox. Finding it a little hard to get into. I think I might have OD'd on whole ancient world/modern mystery genre. Dan Brown has a lot to answer for!

Just finished and loved "Nature Girl" by Carl Hiaasen. With the exception of George MacDonald Fraser's Harry Flashman, Hiassen's wackey Floridians are the funniest characters in fiction. They are killing me!
