Bill Just finished The Potted Gardener, an Agatha Raisin mystery; my first and enjoyed very much. Just starting By the Time You Read This, a John Cardinal mystery by Giles Blunt. I've enjoyed all of the other books in the series so far.

I like Agatha Raisin; she's funny and smart (though the poor gal never seems to catch her man).

Leslie | 130 comments It's been a very long time since I read a Lee Child book, and now I remember why. After reading so many enthusiastic comments about Child and Jack Reacher, I was excited to open "Echo Burning" and begin reading. It didn't take long at all for me to get that creeping sense of disappointment that one gets when one realizes that the book they are reading is not only falling short of expectations, but is actually pretty awful. I kept reading, hoping for improvement, but I have arrived at page 181, and I've decided that it's just not worth the time and effort. I have too many other books waiting. No spoilers, but the whole premise of the story, Reacher, out of the blue, being brought into this very suspicious family by their much disliked daughter/sister-in-law, was ridiculous to begin with. The characters and dialogue are stereotypical and poorly written. Their interactions are truncated and unbelievable. I find, really, nothing at all to like about this book. I won't be reading another.

message 6064: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments I finished S is for Silence (Kinsey Millhone, #19) by Sue Grafton . I did like this book and enjoyed the story. I liked how she would go back in time and have the story recreated by the characters on the days leading to the event. It was an interesting read from their perspective. However, Kinsey usually ties the entire story in a big bow. Meaning, you know all the answers to the questions throughout the book. That was not the case in this story which really irked me. I like closure and I don't feel that I had that with this book which is why I gave it just a 3 star. The characters are likable with the exception of Violet. I found her some big floozy which I couldn't stand. I feel the reader was let down a little since the story didn't seem complete with all the questions addressed.

Agree totally!!! Any suggestions for books set in Florence?? Plan on visiting Florence next year and would like to have dipped into a few books before I go. I had read quite a few of Donna Leon's novels prior to visiting Venice a few years back - absolutely loved it, such a unique and beautiful city, a city I certainly hope to re-visit in the future!!!

I went to Venice 3 years ago and thought it was a dirty city. I didn't care for it at all. I loved Florence though. It was so pretty and I loved the churches. We went on a few tours there in Florence. My favorite was Rome (all in the same trip).

Now I'm going to Scandinavia in August and looking forward to it. I should look for some books based there as it might give me some insight on the cities.

Pete Morin | 61 comments I just finished Who Do, Voodoo? by debut author Rochelle Staab. I thought it was a superbly told story from beginning to end.

If you're a cozy fan, this is pretty much the standard for excellence, IMO. And with the Voodoo angle, she's hit on something very unique.

Stuart Laing (stuartslaing) | 27 comments Just finished Strip Jack by Ian Rankin and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although the mention of Kingussie in the Scottish Highlands felt false as it wasn't pouring with rain constantly. Yes, that was a holiday to forget :), but other than that it was another great read in the Rebus series.

I just read The Kill Artist a few months ago. It was a good book, 3 stars. You have to read it so the background is set. My favorite out of that series so far is A Death In Vienna. The others were pretty good as well. The rest I rated 4 stars. Very good books.

This is my very favorite series, Mallory has been around quite a while, way before many of the others.

message 6099: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments I finished The Killing Edge by Heather Graham last night. This book was great. Chloe was a character that women would want to be; strong, confident, and speaks her mind. She didn’t get scared easily or rattled which I admired. She just wasn’t one of those girls you had to coddle. The story was interesting and totally engulfed me. I was reading until 11:30 pm just to finish this book. I didn’t care for the detail in the intimacy between her and Luke. I think they could have left that out and it still would have made it a good book.
